Is the hoplite deffending with his leg? That's nice. But will you release a seperate pack for RTW and BI, or will the animations be included in the same pack?

All animations will be released in one pack, as it appears that BI's animations have been included in 1.5...

My concern over distributing 1.6 content to people who didn't buy it was originally the main reason why work on animations was suspended, so finding out the information to the contrary is why work's been resumed.

Edit: the screenshot moved to another post

The shield wall looks to be working really well with hoplites. It is generally orderly while not being too messy, and the soldiers even push forward at the enemy!

    fs_s1_hoplite

Standing idle, the hoplite doesn't stand completely motionlessly, but moves ever so slightly, giving further semblance of a human being. The idle animations are all much smoother:

Standing ready, spear up high and shield close in, the classic hoplite pose:

    Attacking:

    Advancing, carefully and on guard:

Getting hit from the back, but the hoplite regains balance (again, there are 8 of these, different kinds, hit from back, from front, etc):

    Charging:

When close to the enemy, a run turns into a charge:

    Blocking a high attack:

    Blocking a low attack:

Dodging a high attack, the hoplite is nimble too:

He can dodge low attacks as well, judges give full points for grace and balance:

And finally, if knocked down, the hoplite uses his arm and his shield to prop himself up, ready to return into the fray for more:

    Action shots:
    - dodging a low attack from a barbarian general
    - blocking sword slashes from two sides
    - advancing in tight formation against enemies who don't know yet just how outmatched they really are
    - The charge of the hoplite...

Sig, I heard that the latest patches allow for units that do not use a bow or fight in the phalanx to have both a sword and spear (something only Laca's numidians originally managed to do, and even then, required the same spear skeleton for either weapon).

Is that true, and if so, will the hoplites be able to fight with sword and spear?

I don't see why not... In fact, ever from 1.2 times, hoplites have been having a spear and a sword... that is why in fact I recommended that only the spear be used, because using both meant that the hoplites would almost never take the spear out. So both weapons have been around for a long time.

EDIT: Oh, and if haven't mentioned this before, of course other mods can use the upcoming pack, absolutely, as long as gladius anim is retained only for Roman troops, and hoplite anim is retained only for Greeks, or any people of Hellenic civilization.

I had a quick play around with a spear/sword combo today - just hoplites with no phalanx ability. When attacked by cavalry or infantry they switched to swords immediately. But, when I told them to attack cavalry they did switch to spears. I really wish CA would make spear/sword infantry work like spear/sword cavalry.

That's too bad, it doesn't matter which the spear is set to, whether it's the first or second weapon?

Are you working on the Macedonian 2 handed hypaspist anim at all?

The older 'overhand' style would be suitable for the lesser poorly trained troops (militia, levy and possibly mercs) but the Epanimondas style phalanx was the norm for larger professional troops of the day...including Carthage and Ptolemys' Eygpt.

I only tried spear/sword, but I will be tring out some other possibilities in the next few days. I will post here again if I come up with anything better.

*edit* I tried some more tests. The good news is that with a sword/spear set up they will switch to spears when attacked, and they will switch back and forth between weapons if you use attack/alt-attack. The only down side, if you are planning to use this for hoplites, is that they idle with swords out (or whatever their primary weapon is), and then switch to spears when attacked (or whatever their secondary weapon is). It's really just that initial moment of contact on defense that is still a little klunky.

    I think it's for the 1.3, 1.5, 1.4, 1.6.

Sig, your hoplite animations are really much better than the previews versions, I can't wait to play with them in the game!
