Thread: sassanian army in the sixth century

Default sassanian army in the sixth century

...for me it's an exciting question because I haven't so much knowledge about that time era.
(I'm the typically western barbarian )

what kind of strategy do you follow when creating the sixth century army of the sassanids?
    How many units?
    What about the map?

well im not sure about AODII but for my mod EoR similar concept just for M2

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=755

we plan for the roster to have a strong base of horse archers with a few infantry units and a few dismounted guys, but mainly regional EG:Syrian Archers, Sughdian Infantry etc

We plan about 14 units + elephants

For the map we have a good discussion on a trait system going on...

a map preview is in planning (together with a new 3D-building preview made by Wundai+karlost as well as a preview about new units made by our empio)
In this case I fear you have to wait a little bit.

    now to the units
the structure in general is top secret. So, please understand if I can't give very detailed informations. Esp. because I think it is not "good" to present the result before the last unit is done.
But the concept was finished months ago.

but this I can tell you:
28 sassanian core units (infantry+cavalry together) - exclusively for the Sassies.

Furthermore we will offer another ~18 additional units for the Sassanids which are also available for other factions or representing free rebels. (e.g. Lakhmids or Kushans.)

That means the Sassaids have access to 46 different units. But that doesn't "overstrech" our DMB ressourses because (as mentioned) 18 units are also available and part of other factions.

    Interesting.

I will look forward to how your 6th century Sassanians will be.
You will use the post reform TO&E (Khosrow I `s reform)?

    @Gaiten
yes, even if the reform happend after 527AD (that's our start date) we included them
That has simply the gameplay-reasons and due to the length of the campaign.

Nevertheless it would fit in your start date.

Khosrows father, Kavadh I, had already introduced some of the military reforms in the early 6th century.

    exactly
that was our main reason to make that.

The idea was that the bulk of the reforms (which were started by Kavadh - as you mentioned) was coming in the 530th (and on).
And it would be a mistake to ingnore them. The mod will finish somewhere in 636 or 664AD (Yarmouk or the creation of the 1st thema). That will be decided ad-hoc next time.

    Game of the Fates
Mod of the week on hold -- I've played nearly every RTW mod out there.
BOYCOTT THE USE OF SMILEYS! (Okay, just once)
Antiochos VII...last true scion of the Seleucid dynasty...rest in peace, son of Hellas.
I've returned--please forgive my long absence.

indeed. We find probably the last Legions, but several new Roman units were also very strong.

...the good thing is: I can play them with our internal beta

    @Gäiten

I've never really looked into the workings of RTW, expect for changing PREFERENCES. I did testing for ChivTW untill I had no more time left to do so. My computer is rather old and runs RTW kinda slow. What could I do?
    Writing unit info's?

    I read history.
