He deserved it. Though I'm not really sure what knighthood even matters these days.
We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in: machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little: More than machinery we need humanity; More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

I think it means prestige and a higher social status due to the honour implicit in the title of a knight...
... or something along these lines.

Yeah plus the countless other (mostly crap) movies hes done.

Being a Knoght dosent really mean naff all these days tbh though, just a little tweak to your name and a pat on the shoulder by the queen

About time too. It doesn't really mean much these days but it is a sign that he and his work are valued by the British people - he would have got it much earlier if it hadn't been for the Hammer Horror films (the 'Establishment' can be quite snobby about such things).

Honestly, he should have got it for Hamlet in 1948. Think about that...that was right after WW2. That's how long he's been around and in case you're REALLY interested...here's a list of all of the films he's been....They just don't make them like that anymore do they...

More than 60years of acting, thats pretty sick

More than 220 films, most of us don't even WATCH that much, yet he participated. Not to mention the TV series. Sick fits it^^

Its mostly honourific, but there are usually little perks with these kind of titles. For example, I work with a lass whose dad has an MBE, which means she is allowed to get married in Westminster Abbey, should she so choose.

Come on man! How cool would it be if you could call yourself a Knight!

I wonder what he's most proud of and where his role as Saruman fits into it. It's interesting that he will probably be the most well known for that or Count Dooku when he had so many other films.

Sir Alec Guinness HATED the fact that he was always known as Obi-Wan Kenobi....

I hope he doesnt resent his role as Saruman. I really enjoyed his portrayal. I thought he was creepy...

He's a big Tolkienite who claims to read LotR at least once a year. I think his only complaint from his role in the films is that his scene from RotK was cut from the theatrical version. He's said that he'd like to reprise the role for "The Hobbit" but only if they could film his scenes in England. I hope they can find a way to make that work.
