    Do this.
If you have a lance-wielding cavalry (charge bonus 6+) and the enemy is set up in two or more ranks (two lines of units, not two rows of men), ride your horseys to the first rank and make sure they don't run in too deep. When they're stationary and fighting, select them and double right click the unit behind the one they're fighting.
Your cavy will begin a charge and totally obliterate whatever they have immediately in front of them.
Chaining this stuff, you can make mailed knights obliterate a whole army of general's bodyguard units.
If the enemy is set up in one line, attack it from a flank with a column-shaped cavy unit and do as above, selecting neighboring enemy units one after another.

Who said cavy charges aren't effective?

I actually find single-clicking to work better. First set them up and wait for them to stop and form up, if they dont then they will delay the charge and possibly just walk to the enemy or run at it and hit it before being ready to charge. Then single click the enemy and they will probably charge alright. Also charging is more difficult in cities or near obstacles since if even one guy isnt lined up the charge will get delayed and in turn all the horses will just march into the enemy without the lances down.

Using troops effectively in battle takes more than a simple click. If you want to get the most out of them, you need to learn how they work. After studying them, you will note that spearmen are best when in formation, facing the enemy, and stationary; archers work best when they are taken off of auto fire and skirmish modes and behind infantry; and cavalry work best when they are facing the enemy and a good distance away from the enemy.

If you simply click (once) on knights, when they're so far away, they will trot in, a horn will sound the charge, and you will see them speed their charge; this, like a successful battle, takes practice to achieve every time.

I noticed trees pretty much screw up a perfect charge...

But when executed properly, I always mumble things like "Domino day!"

E:TW's natives have developed a new "Ballistic Automatic Detection And Seeking System" to utterly annihilate any European that sets foot on their soil... That's BADASS for short!
