I would actually like to see the Volga Bulgarians be a playable faction. Not too big on the idea of playing one of the satellite principalities. Ryazan only make sense if you move the mod-beginning forward or... say, delete the entire southern half of the map and add all those Turkish and Byzantine provinces to the north to give them room to expand. Chernigov makes even less sense.

Norway I can't imagine as their interests, along with the Danes, were still (for the moment, at least) focussed on the Atlantic isles and not into the Baltics. Finland don't make sense in the time period involved (or any time period, really, because there's no such thing as a 'finland' until the 19th century or so. Before that, it was just the place where a bunch of people who all considered themselves Finns lived). Sweden might work, though not Gotaland, because the interests of the two became identified with one another fairly early on and while the Getes as an independent race survived late into the age, their position as an independent state capable of pursuing its own ends became dependent on the strength or weakness of the Swedish king, like other groups in the area.

Uh... I'd like to see Smolensk, I guess, though I don't recall Smolensk playing much of a part in Russian politics at the time. Their kniaz, if I remember correctly, was content to drift aimlessly back and forth between adherence to Kiev and an independent agenda of his own until the fall of the southern Rus to the Mongols and Smolensk's own absorption into the Lithuanian Superstate.

One of the good things about a Ryazan principality, of course, would be that it would provide a block in the central Russian Principalities, preventing horde factions from sweeping in easily while also allowing for a general tacking of the course between Kiev and Vladimir-Suzdal. That is, if the AI in M2TW was capable of that.

That depends only if the timeframe of the new version would change...
For example in the existing timeframe Chazars have no place....
Chazars are a almost unknown faction worthy to be presented ONLY-i repeat-if the timeframe go a bit back...
If RuTW would deside such a change CBUR will provide an earlier byzantine unit roster and via a "army reform" event the existing ine will apear adding an essence of realism!
I would love to see Khazars (in early times helped the Kievan Vikings to survive as their "protectors"-Kievans were vassals of the "Great Chan")...
They had quite unique units and they were the cause of the creation of famous "Russ" units like the Druzinas equipted with bows and lances...
