As part of our revamping of the sites security one of the measures we have taken was the removal nearly 6000 membership accounts from our database. The accounts in question have had at least one of the following conditions:

1. Bogus email addresses
2. Not been active in many months
3. Have had almost nil posts throughout their tenure.

You do not need a membership to download files. You require a membership to upload files.

Hehe, I hope this will be remembered as 'the Great Purge of TWC'. Spartan, for his excellent performance in this whole thing, will from now on be known as 'Spartan the terrible'.

But seriously, isn't this getting a little out of hand? 6000 is almost 2/3 of all TWC members. In the past we were still discussing whether to delete a couple of hundred of accounts, and now *Kablam!*, 6000 members have been swept away in an instance. I know TWC is under martial law, but I fear that this is going to get out of hand...

I know I had at least two messy, abandoned or semi-failed accounts. And i guess that others might as well. Seems fine to me anyhow.

May I ask if civiates were also purged too if they were gone for a long time? They are more likely to come back than the average user you know.

Bleh, I think purging most of the none active members were a good thing.

I don't know the numbers, but I don't think someone who set up an account months ago and only posted once could be honestly called a TWC member. If one of those accounts weren't ephemeral then we will hear about it.

That being said, of the criteria stated I would have no issue with those accounts who fulfilled the first criteria or both the second and the third, but as deathdoom says the Civitate status is supposed to be a permanent recognition of contribution and good standing - not to be lost by mere abeyance.

1. No civitates were culled.
2. Members who hadn't been active in 6 months were removed.
3. Members within the last two-three months who posted less than 5 times were removed.
4. Yeah its nice to say we had x amount of members but does it really count when 60% of those accounts were inactive/unused?
5. Any of these accounts could have been used towards nefarious ends.

I think its a good idea to clean up the clutter. I don't see nearly the thousands of purported members actually posting anything. At most I think there are 200-300 actual posters.

BTW, I vaguely recall joining up before TWC was TWC and the reason I did so was to get at the downloads. Maybe the old sites had different policies and the bulk of the old members never came back after it changed.

Wonderful work, anyone who is inactive for more than half a year, or doesn't ever post doesn't need to be a member of the TWC. They are useless, and simply a threat.

Forget Spartan the Terrible, or Purger, try Spartan the Great! :lol

I think it would have been more in character if Sulla had done the job : being appointed dictator in an extreme emergency situation, then issuing lists of probscribes to be assassinated
Roleplaying the forums administration :p

Well, I have already said that while I praise the job those two did, it could just be a stunningly brilliant takeover of TWC, they could be evil geniuses.

I made a thread about the lack of member involvement earlier. I found that more than 2/3 of all members had less than 10 posts.

Here

Also, the top 0.5% of the members (post wise) had 27.3% of all the posts. So I think that this can keep TWC to active members, we've purged the inactive "dead weight".

TWC is definately going in a new direction and entering a new era. I feel very optimistic about our future.

Yap, this is good now, but let's not do this on a regullar basis, the purge I mean. I'd hate to go on my summer holiday three months in the mountains with only books and food to come back to a working Internet connection only to see that my account is no more. So, a good idea, but let's not make a habit out of it...

yeah, that's a genuine concern, imho .
though, it denotes geekishness of sorts, I mean, what's lost, except for postcount :lol
Wise purging is good, t'is a sign of a concerned and active admin an moderating team
