Default [ETW Battle Story] The Battle of Hamburg and The Battle for Madrid

    The battle of Hamburg:

20 miles outside of Hamburg, a Swedish army waits for the Hannoverites to meet them on the battle field. The Swedish commander doesn't have any defensive works in place yet and no way to build them, he doesn't have time. He stations his troops where he thinks the Hannoverite forces will cross, but he has mistaken. It is bitter cold and the river is almost froze, the dead of winter. He doesn't notice the shallowest point is only 50 yards away from where he placed his troops. The Swedish general hears marching, and German shouts in the air, it is time. The Hannoverites cross not where the general exects, and he orders his troops to beat the Hannoverites to the crossing and drive them back into the ice cold water. He's too late, but Hannover's forces are disorganised and out of formation, this is his chance. He orders his men to form columns and deliver walls of lead to the enemy, but soon, realizing that the Swedes might have them, the Hannoverites break out desperately and charge the Swedes, and a massive, bloody melee insues. One regiment breaks away from the fight as Hannover's general idioticly joins in. The Swedish general orders his troops to target the general's bodyguard. They open fire with many volleys till they hear the general's horse nay and fall with the clunk, the Hannoverite general breaking his spinal cord. A miltia man fighting for Hannover trips over the body, then he realizes the general has just died. He panics, then it hits like a wave, a dominoe effect, the forces of Hannover retreat across the river, where the entire remaining army is spread out and split appart. A few days later Hannover would capitulate. But the Swedish wars with the German States weren't over, yet...

    The Battle for Madrid

It is Summer, the plants are green, the river is babbling, and birds sing. However, that is all about to change. The singing birds in the trees flee and carrion birds cicle above, anticipating what is about to happen. Unlike the Swedish general, this Austrian general knows what he is doing. He is about to take Madrid, but must stop the Spanish advance, this is their last desperate attempt to save the Crown, and Spain. The Austrian army is preparing for a battle that should've happened years ago, in the first Austro-Spanish war, where Spain had lost Flanders and her Italian holdings to Austria, in an attempt to protect those holdings and restore to the Hasburg royal family, then Spain lost Sardinia and Gibraltar to peace talks. The Austrian never actually sent troops to Iberia. Austria has had 2 new monarchs, and the current one, Ferdinand, a rather average ruler, unlike his predecessors, who were very talented. Austrian almost suffered a Republican revolution with the last queen. Now, since the people are happy once again, the 1st Viennese Public Guard regiment, originally designated to defend the royal palaces and family in Vienna, has also joined in the fight, after all, this is technically a family matter. Charles II, the last Hasburg king of Spain, instead of giving away Spain's territory to Austria, where the Hasburgs were still going strong, he have it up to the French royal family. Now Austria must re-possess Spain's homeland.
The Austrian general first places his Jaeger Korps near the bridge on the right, supported by the Viennese Private Guard. On a secondary crossing to left, he stations cannons and troops by the river bank. The Spanish marines have joined the fight, and converge on both crossings, screening the more elite and valuable guards. Both regiments get massacred. Then the Spanish Royal Guard (Guarda de Real) regiment crosses the river on the left crossing. But the Austrian general orders his cannons to fire canister shot, and after a few shots, the so called "elite of the elite", the most prestigous regiment in the Spanish military, with the biggest role, retreats, bodies strew across the river bank and laying the muddy crossing, the river now red with blood. Now it time for the Austrians to counterattack, en masse. Troops on both crossings cross the river, the troops given the duty of holding the bridge (The jaegers and Viennese guard), hold the Spanish militia and Irish Brigade in place, while the troops on the left crossings attack from the rear, enveloping Spain's force, a few days later Spain would lose a key battle battle at one of the forts, and Madrid was captured, her leaders executed or exhiled into Russia (Austria's ally), and several new nations erupted in America. Austria had statisfied her revenge and repossession of Sapasin's land, the war was over!
