Catapults work for me sometimes (killing half of the trolls/Olog-Hai before reaching melee), but sometimes the same catapult does not hit even one of them. But with dwarven heavy infantry (dragonslayers and axedwarves), they are not too hard to deal with.

When its 3:1 to 6:1 odds you regularly face, answer is YES though any elvish archer worth his salt will RUN LIKE HELL lol.
Yes you do take down a silly number of orcs with arrows but you need your infantry to hold and of course your terminator generals for the killing blow. Rarely are you able to stop a determined attack with arrows alone esp against uruk hai or the higher tier armoured orc units.
Of course it helps that you can run pretty quick but thats balanced out by the 9 turn recruitment cycle (i'm using RR+RC), which explains the stupid odds you always face
2 Fountain Guards (spear wall on) >> 1 Oleg Hai : FTs ~10% more expensive, 50% casualties (good money wise)
2 Swan Knights (only charges no fight) >> 1 Oleg Hai : ~25% more expensive , ~80% casualties (ok money wise...)
Couldn't find better cost effective combos for the Gordonian army. One unit which has interesting effects are the Pelargin Marines (force stop after throw javellins, don't let them fight), due to AP javellin bonus.
The problem with PMs is you have to use it with a meet shield, and the meet shield dies too fast from your own javellins, hence it cannot be cost effective.

Anyone got good tips for campaign High Elves vs olog hai (bearing in mind with RR+RC mod its impossible to recruit enough high level units to counter w/ massed elite infantry or massed elite archers, also only cav is generals).
The best I can do so far is pin with swordsmen and keep firing flaming arrows alternated with charges w/ general(s). Which involves taking heavy losses (25% is v heavy for a high elf army!). I wish I had the luxury of a full stack of eldar class troops... as it is I can barely manage 2 of them for my entire map since only 1 town can produce them.
Also is it just me or is it crazy that olog hai are only 1500, thats 300 more than light elven archers and my money is on the olog hai to slaughter 3 stacks of light archers worth nearly 4x the amount
OK thanks, I thought fire arrows did more damage
Even if they did, the extra bow reloading time and lower accuracy are enough to render them useless against trolls.
No mod.
Just kept charging all the time without letting SKs fight at all. Charge -> Retreat -> Charge -> Retreat
It's micro intensive though, and hard to be achieved in the heat of battle without pausing.
Elves need a unit which can form spearwall...
Did I mention 3 units of Fountain Guards can own 2 units of Olog-Hai with only 53% casualties? They are even cheaper!
Spearwall = Best answer vs. Olog-Hai
Just make sure you point them with the edge of your spears though and not your back!

In my Silvan campaign I am in the process of kicking mordor out of mordor and then will procede to take their other settlements in what was rhun - how did that happen?!
But i prefer to use the mongols tactics - place 4/5 units of horse archers on the top of a hill near a full stack of olag-hai. They always attack and then as you have the height advantage you can fire sooner and then use the shooting circle to stay out of their reach. And once all your arrows are expended withdraw. They follow on the campaign map, do the same again but as you can't withdraw get your units to surround the olag hai and once EVERY unit has used all its arrows charge all my units at them - may get high losses but so do they - over all about 85-90% of olag hai are dead

I stand corrected, sir.
AFAIK, only phalanxes can form spearwalls..
