Harry Potter? didnt know it came from there too. Actually I took it from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. When Gandalf is with Pippin looking out to Mordor.
And thanks for the nice comments, I thought: "this could either go really good or really bad." thankfully it played to my side.

The plunge

Months have passed King Ariogaisus was giving the final touches to his invasion plans. His attack had been delayed long enough by many troubles, for instance, the Gauls had not let him a moment to breathe, they had made many constant, yet small raids, even reaching the walls of Alesia, thus impeding the long planned invasion, they always retreated before the King could organize a sally against them. In the inner cities, packs of bandits had appeared everywhere, mercenaries, low-lifes, former soldiers, everyone wanted to get for free the precious food the Germanics harvested. Gundioc, Hanst and many other captains dealt with these issues as they were instructed to, the only way to deal with these traitors.

Commander Etelgis on the other hand waited, guarding the border of Germania he awaited for the Britons who promised to take revenge on Germania for their humiliating defeat on the battle of Trier. There in the forbidden forests, Etelgis waited.

On the meantime, Othelhildis, the King´s second son had returned to Damme for military instruction and now he was ready to lead the wolves into battle, he was assigned a small task force to repel the traitors and bandits that lurked in the many forests of the region.
The bandits had become a much larger threat, growing with every passing month; they seemed like a plague the Germanics could not exterminate, recently they had allied themselves with pirates from the British isles and had undertaken many bloody raids and plunder all across the Germanic coastal villages. One of these raiding parties had dared to challenge the might of Germania and marched to Damme with the intent of plundering it.
Othelhildis who was west of the capital noticed their advance and sent messengers to Sido of Lugdunum, the commander of the Damme garrison, bold Sido took up his arms and left with the army to meet the pirates in open battle.
His force was small, most of the able men had been sent to Trier and Alesia to reinforce the borders and those who were left in the cities were inferior in number to this new foe that advanced upon them.
Sido met the rebel force just a few miles west of Damme, the rebel force outnumbered his, but that had never been a problem, he deployed his army in a long line, with axemen guarding the flanks on the right and his cavalry guarding the left.
The rebels were unprepared, at sight, they were scattered and divided, it seemed. The man who commanded them was sitting high on his horse along with other 55 riders, some of them as he, carried blue blood on their veins, the blue blood of the woads.
His force consisted on many warbands and some swordsmen, all equipped in Briton attires, all paid with the gold of the chests of the distant Londinium.
The Woad captain smiled upon seeing the phalanxes of Sido marching against his position.
His troops awaited his commands; they were dispersed in a broad line, with great gapes between them.
“Charge.” He said with a calm voice, ordering his entire force into battle.
Sido visible smirked at this, the rebel “army” was charging at him, divided, they would die quickly. He ordered each of his phalanxes to confront one and only one of the enemy companies, branching his line in many fronts.
He ordered his axemen and cavalry to rush forward and surround the enemy.
The cavalry clashed with some troops that looked like beggars in the left.

But the cavalry wasn’t able to trample them, as they had grown accustomed to, and the initial charge was detained.
The Germanics had fallen in a trap. Seconds later the cavalry was overwhelmed by the sudden charge of the Woad riders. Caught between disaster and death, the Germanics weren’t able to hold their position, they relied on mobility and they had splashed themselves against a wall of men. Men that refused to give ground.

They lost heart, and for the first time in the years of the unified Germania, the Germanic cavalry ran before an enemy.

They ran across the gaps the phalanxes had made in order to meet the individual rebel companies.
And so the rebel cavalry ran past enemy lines.
In the right, the axemen of Germania fared no better, they had charged against some soldiers that only used a shield and a sword, and nothing else, the axemen thought they had victory gained here, but their axes broke against the big shields of these naked warriors, and their shields shattered into pieces when they were put to the big swords the traitors slashed about.
In a matter of minutes the survivors of this massacre ran away in shame, barely making a dent into the enemy.

The only thing Sido could do was watch in terror as his flanks had been destroyed and exposed, but, the phalanxes would save the day, or so he thought. But then disaster struck, from the rear lines of the enemy a new company of warriors sprung into action, these ones looked more “professional” and they marched in a disciplined fashion, these warriors hurried themselves into the fray and they ran through one of the many gaps between the phalanxes and hit one of them in the flanks and rear.
This strategy proved to be deadly for the wolves who still howled, even in their death throats; Sido was tied up, he could not order another phalanx to relieve them, they were all tangled in melee battle against their own company. In desperation he sounded charge and threw himself into the back of the flanking rebels.
But it was tragedy; the Germanics had turned in order to fight the warriors that surrounded them and their spears pierced their own cavalry, Sido´s charge was refrained and the rebels threw him off his horse and beheaded him. His bodyguard suffered the same fate.
The phalanx rapidly crumbled under the two flanked attack, in this order the rest of the Germanic phalanxes on the left were surrounded and annihilated. When the last had been crushed beneath the overwhelming traitors, the pirates turned to the right most phalanxes, that with the extra time they had had destroyed their attackers and sent them into oblivion.
But they were still too far away to support each other. And they too were close, very close to being surrounded and defeated.

But the quick feet of the surviving phalanxes hurried to save their partners, and not a moment too soon, for it took their entire force and their utmost effort to drive back the traitors, they, somehow were sturdier that the scum they had met thus far, their armor and weapons were of nice quality matching those of the Germanics. In this attrition battle the Germanic spirit proved to be stronger, they once fought united and they scattered the rebels before them.
When the enemy started to rout, one phalanx chased after them to assure they could not hit them in the backs, again…..
They allowed themselves a moment to rest, but it was denied from them as they heard the ground tremble and shake, behind them, the woad cavalry was charging against them, in hopes of catching them off guard. Had it not been for the intense drilling they had been set to they would have been trampled over, but one man with a loud voice yelled.
“Back formation!! Turn around!! Front to back!!!” he ordered, and the phalanxes quickly followed his orders, and the back line become the first line and so on. It was in a moment´s notice before the woad raiders faced a deadly wall of Germanic spears, tainted in the blood of their enemies and eager to avenge their honored comrades fallen in battle.
They could not stop their charge.

In a split second the momentum changed in favor of the Germanics, the horses died as the waves die as they crash into an invincible risk.

The Woad riders did one thing, and that thing, was to die, at least they did not run, nor they begged for mercy, they died proudly, with honor.

The battered remains of Sido´s army returned with his body back to Damme where they gave him a proper funeral worthy of a General. After the funeral a message from the King arrived, it ordered Sido to take his army and march to Samarobriva, a message was sent back to Alesia informing of Sido´s death and the destruction of his column, in exchange Othelhildis was the one now marching to the west as his Father commanded.
For plans had changed, King Ariogaisus was not going to invade Gaul, at least not directly, he was many days away of any Gallic town, many days of march where his army could be easily ambushed, so he decided to turn north and kill two birds with a single spear thrust.
He now prepared a punitive force against the Britons for the invasion of Trier, he and Commander Etelgis were to march directly into the savage lands, many years ago the Germanic lords gave permission to these beggars to settle in those useless lands, they had exceeded their hospitality, now it was paying time, a long due payment, Samarobriva was going to burn, and from there Ariogaisus could easily reach Condate Redonum the great Gallic port and give a heavy blow to his enemies economy, with those two cites under his rule he could control the sea. He could, it first came as an impossible thought, but he could invade Britannia, and rid the land of those beasts….
That he was thinking as he supervised his army, he smiled in satisfaction, he turned to his wife, and sent her a fleeting kiss, then he faced his troops and uttered two words:
“Move forward!!”
The stage was set, and the pieces were moving…..

thanks Gladius I appreciate ur comments and no Lynch, the free version is free, and it has lasted since I started this AAR so I guess it lasts forever, with the paid version u can change the images format (JPG-BMP and such)
