In the basic situation (standing, shiled wall, etc) they wear in one of their hands the shield, and in the other hand the (two handed) axe.
In the "close combat" they wear their shields on their backs and use two handed axe wit their two hands!

why not just have them hold the shield with the axe as it is strapped on and they must be used to it after all they are trained warriours?

Just out of interest, will Orkney, Shetland, the Isle of Man and the various islands of Outer Hebrides be able to be colonized in the game (like in Kingdoms)? Because historically the Vikings from what is now modern day Norway did do that as part of the sea road which was important for trade for them.
