Default The Last Kingdom - FACTION PREVIEW / HORDALAND

    Jarldom of Hordaland
    Viking Culture

Hordaland is one of the larger Jarldoms of Norway, led by the fierce warrior King Eirik.

While there are many strong Jarldoms in Norway, few can claim to be as strong or as disciplined as the Jarldom of Hordaland. Here men cling to traditions of the past, never forgetting the lessons they've learned and morales they've been taught.

Winters are harsh and the sea is unforgiving, and because of this even daily life is dangerous. This has led many men to turn away from their old means of supporting themselves. Why should a man risk death for a small catch at sea, when he can take the same risk to raid and pillage?

King Eirik must now decide. Will he take up the axe and sail accross the sea, or will face down the other Jarldoms of Norway and make himself a king?

Stengths: Strong melee infantry and quality training
Weaknesses: Weak infrastructure and little cavalry

Goal: Conquer all of Norway, destroy Vestfold, Alba, and Northumbria, and conquer Iceland.

    Building example:

    2. Religion line:

    Altar Clearing to Freyja
You have built an altar clearing for Freyja in this settlement.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

In the consecrated grounds of the sacred grove, you have built an altar clearing for Freyja. Freyja is the Norse goddess of love, fertility, and beauty. She belongs to the more peaceful Vanir, one of the two lineages of the gods, along with Njord, her father, and Freyr, her brother.

She is often invoked in childbirth and for good crops. She also has some association with war and death, since she receives half of the dead in battle in her hall Sessrumnir, on Fólkvangr, in Asgard, while the other half, the most renowned of the warriors, go to Valhalla, ruled by Odin. She is also the chief of the Valkyries.

She owns the most beautiful necklace ever made, the Brisingamen, and none surpasses her in beauty.

Historically, the altars in the norse world were made of a pile of stones, and were called hörgar. These humble altars were used for sacrifices and other ceremonies (like marriages). The blood of the victim was placed on a bowl over the pile, and then splattered on the assistants with a fir twig as a way of consecrating them.

Bonus: +5% population growth, Culture conversion bonus.

    .

    9. Merriment line:

    Skald circle
A skald now comes regularly to this settlement to praise you and embellish your deeds through witty poems and tales, or throw one or two satires in your honour if you don’t pay him.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

This skald or poet now tells tales in your settlement, reciting sagas about past wars, testimonies about battles, praises to a jarl or king, and an occasional satire about someone that crossed him in the past. This fellow now comes more often to this settlement, for he has found a good audience that pay him to enjoy his tales.

Historically, skalds were the Norse version of bards. These poets specialized on skaldic poetry, verses that consisted on praises to a particular jarl or king. This more complex form of poetry was complementary to the simpler eddaic prose, that told tales of the gods and heroes of old. Examples of skald poems are Ragnarsdrápa, composed on the early 9th century in honour of the hero Ragnar Lodbrok, and the Glymdrápa of late 9th century in honour of Harald Hárfagri.

Bonus: Public order due to happiness, +5%.

So, this mod is also "historically inspired but creatively done" so the work is not perfectly historical...

Very nice. A minor typo(?) though, you wrote that Húskarl Axemen have only 4 attack and 3 defence?

    Besides that, a great preview.

Absolutely beautiful. My excitement and eagerness for this mod, set during my favourite time period and locale, is reaching fever pitch!

My only issue is the consistency of the 2D graphics style that is used. I honestly believe that a mod should either go "all art" or "all photos" when it comes to building and event pictures etc. (ancillaries not too much because most of the time they are too small to notice). The consistency helps the mod feel complete and polished.

(My personal preference is for art, but that's because I adore the Osprey Collection and the works of Angus McBride in particular.)
