I think the obvious answer is Russia. Germany was greatly weakened, but what came out of Russia was quite different than what Russian went into the war with. Russia went through a lot at this time, far more than any other country.

This is a tough call. America went through the Great Depression and Russia went through a revolution. But I would have to say Russia. They went through far more changes and disasters than any of the countries that fought.

Yeah, I'm surprised you're the first to mention that.

BTW: The territory that Russia "lost" it had stolen in the first place so...

It must be either USA or Russia. USA became huge economical and industrial power in the whole world. And they had much more influence on the rest of the world than Russi after the Revolution. So it must be USA.

Oh lay off it. Conquered, not stolen. Just like every piece of land of every nation of the Earth was conquered by someone from someone else. With a very few exceptions, maybe, and even that is probably because we don't know history well enough.

Fair enough.

Just to clarify that I'm not anti-russian or anything, after all the entirity of the US is founded on conquered (stolen) land.

I vote Russia.....but again I do not know the "numbers" of the changing.
I'd like to include also Japan and.... :8 ...yes Italy (both were rural countries and then Industrailized)

Hands down, It has to be Russia. People who said America I disagree with. But first my reason for saying Russia. At the begininng of the WWI Russia was under a monarchy essentially under the Czar, after signing peace with Germany to deal with the many internal problems that plague Russia. Civil war erupts out of difference of opinion on how the country should be run. A corupt monarchy or communism which is equally corupt and infintally more viloent torwards its own people. Of course the more violent of the two sides won. And as Spetsnaz clearly added they lost territory, but the better point was made by I forget who, that the territory it had lost they had stolen to begin with and at the begininng and during WWII they stole it back and then some.

As for America, we returned to our Isolationist policies, as set out under the Monroe Doctrine. Yes it is true America become more of a World player, but we were not the economic powerhouse that we would later become. Less then ten years after WWI the Great Depression hit and any gains made during WWI were clearly lost, and only remade by the Americans themselves. Of course the economic ties gained during WWI clearly helped. But I believe every country has the chance at such economic independance if governed in the correct way. IE not a welfare or socialist state, just to name a few....

I dont think that Japan and Italy really changed much through WWI (except for being dissapointed with their share of the pie, thus setting the stage for WWII). They were both more or less industrialized (except for the big part of the population that were farmers) before the war.

But I agree with you on Russia. I mean, the country had its social, political, and economical system completely changed within a matter of years (wheter that was a good thing or a bad thing, anyone who read Animal Farm will know).

You forgot Belgium on the list! The first world war meant the beginning of emancipation of the Flemish in Belgium!

But if I have to choose from the list I'll go for Russia as well...

I agree that Russia was changed much, much more than america; but as Garbarsardar said Austria-Hungary
Ceased to Exist
A rather important fact , thus making it the mot changed country, by far.

That is true, but even with the divisions Austria-Hungary underwent it would not have fragmented without WWI .

P.S. To the maker of this poll, does through WWI mean Because or During
