Maybe I haven't made this clear to you guys, so I shall now - I don't like music I can't understand. I don't see how you can. The two things that makes Metal music popular are the following: a Catchy riff and good vocals.

Now, IMO, a catchy riff is one that you can never forget; think Pantera's "Walk", or Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Think of Judas Priest's "Living After Midnight", or AC/DC's "Back in Black". Those are all riffs I will never forget for the ing life of me. And all of them are easy to remember, all less than 10 notes in the entire riff(except for Back in Black, but it's got spacing inbetween the different parts, so hey). On the OTHER hand, you've got musical chaos going on in a Death Metal song, guitars being plucked and slapped violently, drummers who sound like they have eight appendage limbs instead of four. People aren't going to like this much unless they have had a serious change in how their brain works(and that was not intended as an insult, it's human nature).

Now, secondly, good vocals: Words that have a message, flow smoothly with the music, but still manage to pack a ing PUNCH with their sheer aggressiveness. Words that one can both headbang to, and reflect on. Metallica's "Sad but True" and, again, "For Whom The Bell Tolls" both cover this well. As does almost every Disturbed song from Ten Thousand Fists onward. I never forgot the first time I heard Deify, or Stricken, or Ten Thousand Fists itself(the original song that made me like Disturbed). They all have powerful messages, they're all hardcore. They're all quality songs. Now, on the OTHER hand; in Death Metal, there's that horrible sound that reminds me of, as I said before, "an angry mentally retarded man". People don't like lyrics that sound like "HURR HURR DURR HUUUURRRR DUURRRR DEATH PAIN SUFFERING HURR DURR HUUUUUURRRRRRR". Neither do I. Again, I don't see how you do.

Finally, can you please just ing tell me, any or all of you, I honestly don't care, why Disturbed and Godsmack, for these reasons, aren't Metal? The aggressive guitars and the solos are there, the lyrical themes are there, and the attitude is there. The quality is good. What's not to like?
