MYTHOLOGY: TOTAL WAR fans: we need your opinion

Hello everyone! We are reworking Mythology: Total War and we are considering a different approach to the idea of a mod based on ancient mythology. There are two methods we are considering:

Approach #1: The Gods as Factions
The idea here is to take some inspiration from the Microsoft game Age of Mythology. In that game, the factions were not individual civilizations, but gods. Now as we know, Rome: Total War has cultures and it has certain factions that belong to those cultures. If we were to use Method #1, there would, for example, be a Norse culture, a Greek culture, an Atlantian culture, a Celtic culture, and an Egyptian culture. The factions would be the Norse gods for the Norse culture, the Greek gods for the Greek culture, and so on. The gods would be represented as heroes on the battlefield (this mod is switching to the Alexander engine). Here is how the factions would be set up:

Culture GREEK (Greek)
Factions:
greek_cities => Zeus
macedon => Poseidon
seleucid => Hades
thrace => Athena

Culture BARBARIAN (Celtic and Norse)
Factions:
germans => Thor (Norse)
gauls => Odin (Norse)
dacians => Loki (Norse)
britons => Lugh (Celtic)
scythia => Nuada (Celtic)
spain => Arwan (Celtic)

Culture EASTERN (Egyptian)
Factions:
egypt => Isis
armenia => Ra
parthia => Set

Culture ROMAN (Atlantean)
Factions:
romans_julii => Kronos
romans_scipii => Oranos
romans_brutii => Gaia

Culture CARTHAGINIAN (Babylonian)
Factions:
carthage => Marduk
numidia => Druaga


Approach #2: Leave As Is
Currently, the mod is arranged more like an ordinary RTW mod. The factions correspond to different civilizations, rather than gods, and the gods will probably be represented as heroes on the battlefield, although each faction will not have a god of its own.

I think gods as factions and the gods are playable as units still.

It's a good idea that each faction only has 1 god that is a hero .. But technically , it doesn't change anything

then would the factiobn's name be like :

Zeus
Athena
...

?

To Theoden: Yes, the factions would be named after the gods, just as in AOM. You're right, it really won't make any difference technically. This idea is rather simple really--it just involves renaming some factions and cultures .

i think cultures could represent religions [and be named as] to tie in with the gods as factions, in turn hero’s would represent the gods on the battlefield.

quests would represent the various wills of the gods.

we will discuss the gods to be used e.g. osiris not isis! amun-ra not ra, vitaris as a celtic god etc etc. ?

But Osiris is dead and in pieces ...lol he can't really lead a faction in that kind of shape.

You're right--instead of calling the Greek culture "Greek", we could call it Hellenic; we could use the term "Druidic" instead of Celtic. Good idea :

oh good point. it would be one of his four sons then, anubis, thoth, horus, 4th? can’t remeber the other. or pharoah [faction leader] resurrects these four by building their temples, upon which osiris arises and they get a new generals body guard.

could gorgon also be a culture? as they would not be a faction now.

could gorgon also be a culture? as they would not be a faction now.

I don't think the gorgons should be a culture, but it would be a good idea to have them as myth units specific to Athena.

beren, yea we could do similar for all hero units ~ where hero’s would be like pharoahs. perhaps some hero’s would be either mercs or obtained by building a given level of temple. that way we can direct the gameplay by build level and locations.

athena would have all the baddie units? hmm i think many of them would be their own factions like e.g. calibos, medusa.

titans and gorgons should really be something other than gods, a different class? so they would be factions too ~ maybe gorgons could be rebel factions.

well maybe titans will be factions or used by others, not sure yet.

also not sure about gorgons, they were a major faction so i may still have them as that, maybe ruled by a god.

lots to consider as this is a new way of seeing the game.

We have lots of good ideas here . I think, if we are to assign the Gorgons to a god, we should assign them to Athena. Maybe some of their more "evil" units could go to Hades.
