.. Since we have Maratha Confederecy and the indians using swords and bows and such, would it be hard to make a potential classical mod? Since we have the "fighting style", dont we only need to make new models?

easier way would be to import Rome's models into 3ds Max, then export them to Empire's model formats when/if we get some 3ds Max tools.
The only things that will probably need to be models will be Greek Triremes (working on that right now. )
And restrict the other modded factions to using nothing but Galleys, just making sure to remove their 4 42lber guns.

The fact that weapons and models are seperate now really helps alot in this too. Ofcourse the key to everything is the mod tools... do you hear that CA? Give us the tools! LOL I'm looking forward to Roman Empires:Total War... oooo... that's a good name.
Roman Empire:Total War you mean?
You might not be able to use a lot of stuff like the testudo and flaming arrows etc though.
"If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance." - George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)
I'm sure you can do flaming arrows, you make a new projectile with higher damage and decreased range, then make a fire effect on the arrow(could be done one way or another)
I haven't done much with special abilities, but I'm certain it's there.
LOL
You know there is already an ancient and medieval mod for Total War. They're called Rome: Total War and Medieval 2: Total War!
Just kidding
lol that is a cool idea, but why not move forward? you guys... always lookin backward

Perhaps many of us think that the ancient time period was more fun than the modern one. :/

Yeah...
I think Rome was my favorite time period but was inferior to M2TW engine and far inferior to ETW engine.
Even if you could create the models you'd have to create proper animations. Roman legionaries swapping blows like 18th century gentlemen won't do for a classical mod at all. So animations are a must, and since CA used motion-capture for their animations I don't see how you'll get around that unless a modder has motion-capture software lying around .
No, a CLassical-era mod for ETW simply isn't happening.
It's a good thing they bound combat animations to fighting style and not the models!
See, ghoorkas, african spearmen, and several other units already use spears, swords, shield, etc.
After skinning them correctly and applying the shield value (also still in the game,) it should be easy to start a classical mod.
And that's only using the tools and methods discovered in the last two weeks, in the coming months I am sure it will get even easier to add and create units to do, just about anything.
Good luck! Hope it works out!

Well, in melee, I've not seen the soldiers "swapping blows like gentlemen", they've acted very natural during melee (because of the Mocap recordings), and from what I saw of played the Rome demo a couple of years back, the fighting animations looked too linear and robotic IMO, I think linking the skeletons to the models (I think that's how Rome worked anyway,), would make the Legions fight more fluidly.
3ds Max CAN read Mocap data, and might be able to record it (I've never tried) the only problem, is having the necersary equipment.

Just shiny lights and a camera theoretically.
My Son would like a mod that has factions from the dinosaurs (instead of Elephants), through cavemen and up to and including starwars.
I think he wants to see how an army of Light Sabre equipped Darth Vaders would fare against cave bowmen mounted on a squad of T-Rexs.
PM me if someone manages it :O)
yay for classical mod!!!
