Whats up with "doing" someone's mom as an insult?

In more than one culture and language, telling someone about some sexual activities concerning their mom is a common insult. But why is this so and how did it originate? I am really curious cos how did a same insult exist in so many differnet cultures and languages? Anyone knows?

No one messes with my mom if they want to leave unscathed. It's probably because our moms are sacred to us. They are our progenitors.

Sorry to break it to you, it isn't an insult, it's something that is laughed at, and the people who do take it seriously generally make a big deal about it as they want attention... I mean seriously are you going to make a big scene because someone made a stupid joke about your mom... People don't you seriously when you say stuff like that... I know I don't...

It's the last means somebody has as a cheap shot. They know they don't have anything to fall back on, so they try to insult your mother, which of course, doesn't work.

It just shows how desperate someone will be.

That's a horribly cliche insult and no one should ever use it. Be a bit more creative. Do someones dad, for instance.

try "cao ni zu zong shi ba dai" or " 18 generations of your ancestors"...one of the most powerful insults in mandarin....

One of most common curses (if not THE) here among South Slavs too.
Like "my car broke down, his mother" or "You're so cute your little mommy" (when petting a dog or saying to a baby).
It's mostly just an addendum to some negative statement about someone or something, though it can be excused among good friends if both are OK with it, since it mostly comes out without thinking. But many people take serious offense at it. I must admit, saying it did bring me to a fight or two. Mostly me saying it to provoke as I don't care about it unless I want to be provoked.

C'mon, we use it in my workplace all the time, but never as an insult. Maybe just for some laughs. Like today I said to my mate at work "dude, you're so gay". And he replied "that's not what your mum said last night". It's not an insult. Just witty laughs.

I do the same thing with my fellow classmates, when someone's irritating another, we just curse his mother or make a comparative joke about her:
