Im not from aisa but taiwan used to be a province of china or something like that and they decided too break free. China didn´t like it and they dont allow direct flights there.

China insists that Taiwan is part of China.

Taiwan insists they are independent.

Officially, Taiwan is a part of China, and China likes to think so and everyone else pretends it's true.

De facto, however, Taiwan is independent. They just can't make it official or China would invade and nobody else can recognize them as such or China would hate them.

Sort of like Tibet, only even more obvious. It's a very sensitive subject for these people.

btw there's no such thing as the Republic of Taiwan. the constitution of the Republic of China (aka Taiwan) actually includes Taiwan, mainland China and Mongolia. They just don't have total control over those places.
