    But I don't understand something: why did the frontage change when the ranks opened up for movement? That would normally change the depth. The frontage would only change if the files would be opened. I don't think it was necessary to open the files for better movement. It was of course necessary to open the ranks because no army at that date used cadence marching and could therefore not march or move in close order with one rank near the other. Could you explain this?
