ordering your troops to hold position

I know that if you order your archers to hol they will stay there and fire arrows, but if you order infantry or calvary to hold do they attack units in their little area that get close to them or what do they do when attacked?

Infantry will hold until attacked then they'll make a short pursuit if the enemy unit flees.

Calvary have do about the same thing but they tend to drift much farther away from the original position, it still shouldn't be to long before they fall back.
