Group forces tips and experience

I have been experimenting with grouping my forces both on land and at sea but find it hard to find a good and effective way to do it. If the groups have different kind of forces they all move at different speeds and quickly loose eachother. Also it would seem that they have incorporated some AI where they spread out automatically when moving to a goal (I might be wrong here), which also is very confusing. So far I found the best is to drag and select several forces and move them without the grouping system (but it is not very time effective).

Anyone found the perfect system yet?

i basically 'layer' my troop groupings. ie, front line infantry gets a group, reserve infantry, and then my cavalry (man, do i love dragoons), and cannon get a group (i like the howitzers alot, they work great behind the rest of my army.)
