Default How to man a forts cannon during siege

It's quite possible this has been asked and answered, if so sorry, but I couldn't find it with search and I don't have a manual (thanks steam).

Anywho, how does one place units on the ramparts of a fort so they will actually man the cannon, instead of standing in nice formation staring at each others backs. I know it's possible as I've done this before by accident, a very pleasant accident, but one I can't repeat.

Your units should automatically man the cannons.

Just put them up close to the cannons and they do it automatically after what I've done

Yeap. Just stack your men on the walls near the cannons and they'll auto fire them.

In 4 different sieges now, my guys lined up next to the cannons have only fired a cannon once. Not one whole battle, but once in one battle... straight down at the guys charging. Never while people approached from afar, and usually just shoot with muskets until the enemy climbs the walls.

I wish I could properly line them across the ramparts as well. I would need a massive army just to man it properly.

They alwasy fire the cannons for me. Two men man the cannon the rest shoot with their muskets when the enemies are close enough.

I find it to be rather glitchy. Sometimes they do it, other times not. Even when they do they're as likely to run off somewhere after firing once or to try and climb down ropes or run out the gate or...

the cannons are pretty short range... but they do man them...

i think the fort cannons are scripted to the same range as the units that will man them... that would explain why they don't pick off anyone outside of musket range.

meh, i use grenadiers for that sort of thing anyways... yay star fort grenade bonus.

I think the best way to get them to fire, is when you have your men lined up already on the walls. Click on an army that's very far away, then they'll use the cannons to fire, and continue to fire I believe.

They will man the cannons if you tell them to fire at a unit. They may fire one or two shots, or several. The AI just doesn't do a good job of what should be obvious.

Also, has anyone else had a problem moving melee troops (e.g. Pikemen) to the walls early in the game? They'd be ideal for repelling the rope climbers, but I can't get them to leave the courtyard of the fort.

I've had this thing for a little over a day now, and I'm finding a lot of it frustrating (my load times for battles are almost endless, even though my computer exceeds the min specs).

Might be time to dust off Med. 2 Total War until CA gets the numerous bugs, performance issues, and gameplay problems fixed.

On a positive note, the graphics are really cool when the invincible pirate fleets wipe out my navy...

This is just plain buggy. I captured that star-fort outside of Paris, and sure enough the silly french tried to kick me from it. I've tried 3 times now to line my guys up, and i can't even get them to face away, let alone shoot and man the cannon. Either I'm really stupid, or this needs to be worked out in a future patch. Could be very awesome, but poorly implemented IMHO.

Makes me want to defend the city and have a normal land battle than a siege one.

I ended up just lining my army inside the fort along the walls. Sure enough the french climbed up, and I slaughtered them as the took their time organizing themselves on top of the walls, before casually walking down the ramps.

speaking of seiges, is it even possible to actually assault a city anymore? anytime i try to assault one, the battle just ends up being in a huge field (even though i'm at the enemy's city walls with my armies).

It's a bother to try to get up the walls to fire the cannon... Those army that do breach the walls and open the gates, rush to the center of the fort to try to capture it. I just lined my line infantries along that path or facing the flag where the enemy troops have massed, and they were killing a whole lot of them rather efficiently.

I've also stopped building star forts and the extended defenses.. whatever the lvl 2 walls are called. The lvl 1 walls are super, they don't have all the weird points and angles that the AI can't handle at all, they are just basically square walls and I'm having great success using wall-canons and actually getting my men to fire theyr muskets from those.
