I still have pretty darn long loading times and was wondering if any one had an idea to speed it up a little. I am running a defrag right now for about 10 hours, but is there anything else? Thanks

If you downloaded via Steam, if you right click the game, go to Properties, then Local Files, and hit Defragment Cache Files that helps a bit. I still have some pretty long load times, but there was a noticeable change after that.
^^ I was about to say that.
So lag times are still unbearably long eh? Damn.
i just tried the defragment tip and havent had a chance to try it with the new settings, but yeah i gotta agree that load times are a big improvement over thee demo
Beside defragmenting HDD you could try and turn off some of the background services (turn off antivirus and disconnect while you`re playing?) or download some program like registry repair (30 days free trial) and clean & defrag your registry.

30 seconds is fine by me. I have 2 small 1kg weights hanging around my desk.
I'll be toned in my arms after a couple weeks playing Empire!

Load times never exceed 30 secs for me, which is about a 100% improvement in comparison to the demo. Very fast rather than a lot of RAM really does help (I'm running 4 GiB DDR3 2000), as does a fast HDD (something like Raptors in RAID0 or a couple of SSDs).
Load times are around 30secs for me too and i only have 2Gb of RAM (using XP). This i can happily live with.
If you mean, you can't select what kind of the units the enemy army has, that's wrong. You can do that the same way as in MTW2.
Loading times are about 20-30 seconds for me.
I have no idea what kind of system you have, but anyway, this are my specs:
C2D 6300 @ 1.86 GHz (if you really have a slower CPU you shouldn't complain really)
HD4830
2 GB DDR
XP
