    On the Adamclisi's Tropaeum Traiani there are many warriors shown with two-handed flaxes, while they can be as you said Bastarnae they could be also Dacians (they are indeed Bastarnae). The two-handed falx was inspired by the rhompaia and it doesn't make sense for this weapon to be passed from thracians only to Bastarnae tribes to the north skipping Dacia altogether.

    Overall there were not many falxes finds in dacian sites but the two-handed falx is present. We don't know how wide spread the falx was, they have never been found anywhere except near the Dacian capital. If this were simply because they were all confiscated by the Romans, it wouldn't explain their absence from sites in Free Dacia or elsewhere. Strange thing is there were no falxes excavated from Bastarnae sites.

    but why with the hoplites? i assumed dacia to be of a more "skirmishing with javelins and close in with a blade"- kind of army composition.

    The Thracian tribes under their control were influenced by the greeks quite a bit and some fought in the hoplite fashion so therefore, the Getae have access to hoplite units.

    Err... i think the RS Team has put in enough research work for this to be a better approximation of the Dacian's military forces than your presumptuous notion of how they "should be". so yes, yes, you ARE wrong.

    wow, rory wow. didnt mean to sound pushy i just wanted to get a better clarification on the style, and yes, i am a neophyte to the subject, and i am here to learn, not to pester. I am 16, burying my nose in book after book trying to acertain the life and ways of the ancients, and this forum is actually a place where i can resolve my questions with those who are blessed enough to know more on the subject.. I did not appreciate the slight coarsness of your post. i am not here to attack the team by any means, and have only the highest respect. So from tone, or any other learned sage, i ask, and to clarify not to be that one annoying guy, but really to know, the true extent of hoplites in the dacian millitary.

    Undoubtedly, RS is on its way to become the greates mod for RTW. An amazing job, RS team! I'm going to love fighting those barbarians with my Roman legions. It's going to be spectacular.

    @rory - calm down

    Basically we could as easily have called them spearmen and maybe this would have removed a little confusion. With regards to blades and so on, a lot of the Dacian units are equipped with sicas as secondary weapons (short curved blades).

    In terms of fighting styles, the Dacians were renowned archers and good horsemen, so this is represented in their unit mix - skirmishers, thracian peltasts, two foot archer units plus two mounted skirmisher units, two horse archers, plus Roxolani (allies) lancers (horse archers) as mounted missile units. In terms of close combat, pretty much all the Dacian units have sicas as secondary weapons (short curved blades rather like mini falxes) - lots of these have been found.

    With regards to the Adamklisi monument, there are a couple of types of unit on there fighting Romans. We decided not to give the Dacians a two handed falx unit because the only units depicted on there carrying it have unmistakable suebian knots which would suggest that these units are of germanic origin (i.e. Bastarnae tribesmen), unless of course it's a load of Roman hocus pocus. The memorial was however built "on site" so hopefully they got their facts right.

    Playing as Dacians then, what you'll find is that you do enjoy a great mix of styles - powerful ranged cavalry, some decent infantry skirmishing units and then some pretty powerful close combat infantry. They really are one of my favourite factions.

    Ultimately we have to admit too that all representations are a compromise due to the limit on unit types imposed by the game.

    1. Black sea colonies -all Hellenic, see Bosporos' preview
    2. Getai conquered those
    3. Overall influence from Thraikians and Bithynians, all of whom spoke a similar language like that of the Getai and ALL of them under heavy hellenic influence.
    4. 216 BCE is NOT 104 CE. It was only later that under Roman threat did the Dacians switch to semi-manipular way of fighting. Prior to that the spear was very common, if not the most common weapon.
    5. Hoplite of 216 IS NOT the Hoplite of 480 BCE. There is an ongoing discussion as to whether the round 0.90-075 aspis shield was used or it was phased of in favor of the celtic thureos, so hoplites could carry those instead.
    6. Hoplite means "Armed man". Whatever Romans want to make it sound like with their mistaking "hoplon"->shield, we don't.

    Hope that you see our point of view, Germanicus. Other than that, enjoy the preview and hopefully, you will enjoy the real thing very soon now.
