With the morning comes a hard decision..

    Read the stories here

Vote, but discuss first and foremost.

    Constructive criticism is welcome.

I would be very pleased if the more experienced TotW writers posted a small statement to each story,
giving advice or just commenting it !

Keep the faith, I've won with some of my worst stories and watched my best go down in flames. It's all a matter of the competition that particular week.

Guess it's to late to write a story now...

A good strong set of stories this week.

My favourite was A Blow for Freedom, it has a poetic intensity that made me feel I was almost there witnessing the events myself.

The opening of God's Wrath seems to bear a resemblance to that of Gladiator. Again, it is quite evocative but I would have liked to see a tiny bit more exposition right at the end, just make it clear what the General saw.

Unorthodox Tactics is a fascinating and promising idea, but it feels incomplete, like a sketch. I think it needs a little more development.

Facing the Beast is a stirring story which conveys the emotion of Julius very well, and contains nice descriptions of the Helvetii. I did however have to read it a couple of times before I understood the relative positions of the three groups.

The Day We Fight is very impressive. It has an oddness of syntax (presumably caused by translation to English) that gives it an air of mystery and the strangeness of an unknown culture. It felt like some ancient myth which can never be fully understood because knowledge of many of the things referred to is now lost.

I was quite pleased with The Mural, but it contains a typo and a repeated phrase which needs adjusting. I really must do more proof-reading.

Was? Past tense? And then... I got only one vote? Maybe I deserved it. Because I don't quite like my story. The Previous One (The Confusing Gays) is written without much love. But somehow I managed to get the win. Really, this is quite strange. For quite a moment I thought my new name started giving me miracles.

There is a significant element of chance to winning the vote, especially when all the stories are competent as they were on this occasion.

There have been times in previous weeks when I was confident that mine was clearly the best story (even if I didn't win the vote). That is no longer the case.
