    Default Science Fiction book suggestions

Can you suggest some SF titles that are supreme-quality and space-based? I haven't read a fair book for months and I need something to start my brain working :grin .
Last SF books I read which were really good were Thrawn Trilogy and some of the Miles Vorkosigan stories. Searching over book sites didn't bring me any results so I now ask for your help.
And can you also explain synopsys so I can as well know base of the story?

    Thanks in advance.

Don't know what you mean by space based, have you read Dune? If you mean by space action, then no, but if it's just set in the space-age, then yeah.

I was actually thinking both political intrigues and space action.

Well if you want political Dune is where its at. Although it has no space battles. Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the Dune prequels focusing on the Butlarian Jihad. Although most Dune purists (including me) think that give the Dune series a bad name they are entertaining.

    May I suggest 2001, 2010, and 2060 by Arthur C Clarke?

"My name is Conrad". I think it was a name of that book. Do you happen to know anything about it? I saw that title in the local bookstore.

Go to amazon.com and type in science fiction in their search. Usually they have lists compiled by consumers of good titles that you should read.

Well War of the Worlds is not in space but it still has plenty of battles and personally I think is one of the books that got people into SF.

Yeah, I was thinking of buying it, but I'll see. BTW, there are really descriptions of battles in it?

Anything by Iain M. Banks but I prefer his 'Culture' sci-fi novels. 'Excession', 'Use of Weapons', 'Consider Phlebus', 'Look to Windward'. All excellent. Also, his most recent book - published 2 years after you posted the question: 'The Algebraist'. Great book - but a bit 'space-opera' for my taste.

    ...

Now THAT, gentlemen, was a bump. *bow*

Asimov's Foundation series is still the best for me. Masterpiece of a genius.

Was just about to suggest that myself.

Asimov is called the grandfather of modern Sci-Fi for no small reason. He is consistently excellent, foward thinking and intelligent. The first and last word in Sci-Fi as far as I am concerned, and the Foundation trilogy would be his finest work.
