Different to that, the title of a Count of Anjou can be created by any faction that holds the Anjou. So there is a French Count of Anjou when the game starts, but England can also make one of her FMs Count of Anjou, after England conquered this province.

What is important, is that the holder of these titles create "Houses", here the "House of Anjou", what is a trait that is passed down to all their descendants. And this is the difference between the new dHRR system and the regional titles system of other mods: As long as any members of the "House of Anjou" are alive, one of them will inherit the title "Count of Anjou" when the holder dies. The exact order is: (natural) sons of a holder first, after that other members of the respective house.

In some occasions these titles are in fact identiacly to factionleader titles of other factions. For example, the factionleader of faction Swabia will always hold the title of a Duke of Swabia, but any other faction can create a Duke of Swabia of her own upon conquest of Swabia. This works for all (or most) titles that are ranking below king, and some kings' titles too....

This is part of our attempts to manipulate the way the game pics the heir. Yes, sons of a king have the highest priority (what also includes brothers of the recent king, when their father had been king too). Next come other members of the royal family, including characters that you have married to your princesses. After that nobles that hold the highest ranking titles, or that hold many titles.

This is of course cummulative: A FM that has married one of your princesses and is also Duke of Normandy has a higher chance to become next heir than the last living cousin of the king who does not hold any titles.

Preview dHRR 0.8 A House Divided

Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand

    - Matthew 12:25

In 1080 all of Germany is a battlefield! The once mighty Empire of Otto the Great in ruins! Brothers fighting brothers, and vassals their lords!

For Heinrich, ruthless but legal King of Germany, has been banned by the Pope. His enemies, of which he has many, have sized the chance and elected Rudolf von Rheinfelden, Heinrich’s own brother-in-law, their new King. With the help of the Pope and his bishops, those rebellious lords have brought the chaos to Germany.

In the very south Rudolf left his son, Berthold, in charge of his old Duchy of Swabia. But Heinrich had already appointed a new Duke with Friedrich von Staufen. This left Swabia divided into two Duchies, the southern one held by Berthold and his Burgundian allies and the northern one held by Friedrich. Meanwhile the Burgundians and Lorraine are falling on each other.

In Bavaria Duke Welf rebelled against the King. But this proved to have been a bad example, because his vassals in return rebelled against him: The Margrave in Nürnberg as well as the Count in Tyrol both joined the side of the King, reducing Bavaria to nothing but her core lands. Only the Margrave of Austria remained loyal to his Bavarian Duke.

Austria, once the border defence against the Hungarians, now being invaded by the Bohemian host! Such was the reward for staying loyal to his rebel lord: Heinrich declared Margrave Leopold deposed and gave his lands to the Bohemian Duke Vratislav. The Duke only has to submit the Margrave by himself…

But the decisive fighting is going to happen in Saxony: Rudolf, having lost much support in his Swabian homelands retreated to Saxony. Here the opposition against the Rhinish kings always was very strong. Magnus Billung, Duke of Saxony, Otto von Northeim, deposed Duke of Bavaria, Lothar von Stade, Margrave of Brandenburg, and Adalbert, Count of Ballenstedt – the most noble houses of the North rallied to Rudolf’s cause. Many of them had spent years in Heinrich’s dungeons, and many have lost relatives by his hand. All have good reasons to hate the King, have fought him for years and wish nothing but to fight it out this time.

The stage is set, the Civil War has started!

But isn’t this the opportunity the enemies of the Empire have waited for? What is with the Oborites? Even the combined might of the Emperor and Saxony could not prevent them from conquering the lands across the Elbe. Who is going to stop them when Saxon and Imperial knights are already killing each others?

And there is France! For now the French kings are weak and their true possessions are small. But how can they be expected to further respect the Emperor when this one is not even respected by his own Dukes?

Whatever is going to happen in the future of Germany, it will take a strong leader to save the Empire!

    Are you strong enough?

A few "hard facts" in addition for that preview (I had forgotten to make start screens, will add them later):

According to the historical situaition in 1080 the German factions in dHRR 0.8 will be splitted into two groups that are at war with each other:

    The "Imperialists/Loyalists" under Heinrich IV:
    Franconia
    Lower Lorraine
    Upper Lorraine
    Swabia
    Bohemia

The "Papals/Rebels" under Rudolf von Rheinfelden:
Saxony (Rudolf will be Saxon FL, but not Duke of Saxony at game start)
    Burgundy
    Bavaria
    Austria
    Milan

Several changes will be made to province ownership to refelct some special situations, like Bavaria reduced to Passau because the Margrave in Nürnberg and the Count of Tyrol sided with the King (Nürnberg will be Franconian, Tyrol Swabian).

Swabia will lose Zürich, this will be added to Brugundy because both, Berthold von Rheinfelden (Counter Duke of Swabia) as well as Berthold von Zähringen (another claimant to Swabia) will be Burgundian FMs. Burgundy will in return lose Lyon, because the rule of the Ivrea Counts of Brugundy did not reach that far.

Austria will be reduced to its two northern provinces. The status of Carinthia/Styria is still under testing, but it will most likely be rebel.

Various bishops that are usualy part of the faction that holds the respective city will be either rebel characters or members of hostile factions, because historicaly those either sided with the Pope or the King against their dukes.

Most characters will have a "Vita" trait that tells you something about them and might explain why he is appearing on this side on not on the one you would expect him. So, take your time to explore the world of dHRR.

Last but not least, because the war is already going on, you will have strong armies at your disposal to instantly start the fighting (and so will your opponents too, of course).

So, when you are looking for some action right from the first turn, the German factions might be your choice in dHRR 0.8.

Amazing, really! This is a really good mod! But, i have a question: if we will start with a civil war, many fatcions of hre risk to disappear in a few turns of campaign, how did you do to avoid this? Because i really liked the political balance between the factions in 0.7, and i think that a war at the beginnig could be "dangerous"...Have you improved diplomacy AI?

The testings so far have not shown a significant "mass dieing" of German duchies. All start with strong armies, and in the auto-calc battles of the AI the loser is never completly destroyed, while also the winner suffers severe casualties. This makes it rather difficult for the AI factions to quickly destroy each other.

Also, the counter-king is already 50 years old, so the civil war will in general be limited to about 10 years in game. Depending on the turns per year, this would be 10 to 40 turns; not enough time to overrung all of Germany.

Playing as Saxony (Counter King) or Franconia (Emperor) the player will also have the opportunity to end the war in the first year by killing his opponent in battle - what actualy happend in fall 1080 to Rudolf von Rheinfelden.

    When it is finished...

What might still take some time because we are going to revise the other factions too.

I'm not to experience modder and think that it's probably impossible, but...
In Russia the heir was always the oldest family member (just like in vanilia). Could You leave old "inherit style" for Russia?
    Still great job

Two problems: Neither was in Rus the eldest guy always the Grand Duke, but the eldest heir to this title (usualy the brother of the last Duke). Nor does Vanilla make the eldest FM faction heir, but the one with the most authority, regardless of age.

But succession for the Rus is already in the planning. While we cannot achieve real seniority, we will make sure that elder FMs will usually picked before young bloods by the engine.
