“The nation that will insist upon drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking by cowards.”

Out of curiosity can we find any estimate anywhere of what the cost of that project will be?

Wait, the Greeks expect the Iraqis to be happy with the fact that they replace one king with another king?
Given that Alexander as an invader probably destroyed more things and killed more people than the Persian empire under Darius.
Oh , first the FYROM, then the Iraqis!

Well, buiding a statue isn't as halfbaked as bringing people from Afganistan to FYROM and hailing them op public television as their long lost cousins. (true story)
And about the tutoring Aristotle comment in the article, they obiously ingore the fact that the era after Alexanders conquests was called the Hellenistic period
Id rather see Greece dedicate a statue to the ten thousand and to Xenophon along the Euphrates where they fought to dethrone a Persian King.
Besides the ancient Inhabitants of Mesopotamia were far more content with the Persian King than perhaps Alexanders successors. By that time they were well use to foreign invaders. It was more like Egypt and Anatolia to welcome the Greeks.

Why would they dedicate a statue to ten thousand mercenaries who fought in the service of a Persian Satrap seeking to become the Persian king himself?
As others have listed before Alexander (or Iskander as known there) has a pretty good reputation in those regions. While I would prefer to see a hospital or school built I doupt that statue will be as expensive.

Xenophon was a great strategist well beyond his years. Shame the Iraqis prob have no clue as to who he is. Anyway Why could be applied to Iskander as well. Why would they dedicate a statue to a Makedonian who dethroned their persian monarch and made himself King in his place.
The Ten Thousand fought for a Prince who many saw as the rightful ruler. Anyway realistically I know they would never do this but it be great if they did. I dont think there are any statues commemorating Xenophon when he was the one behind Alexanders conquest. It was Xenophon writings that convinced Greeks that might Persia was not invincible.
