sure but u have to consider, alexander annihilated and replaced their ancenstry.. and they fell themselves as persian even today..(maybe more in modern iran than iraq)

btw if in Rome somebody will gift us, the statue of some visigoth hero, i'll be so happy to throw it onto the Tiber .. maybe directly down from ponte milvio
    Nice response!

There is too much corruption going on there for them to make that much of difference, or to even get the funding for it. Statue first, funding for hospitals second. Promote yourself slowly.

    Iraqis consider themselves Persian?

Out of curiosity can we find any estimate anywhere of what the cost of that project will be?

Wait, the Greeks expect the Iraqis to be happy with the fact that they replace one king with another king?

Given that Alexander as an invader probably destroyed more things and killed more people than the Persian empire under Darius.

Well, buiding a statue isn't as halfbaked as bringing people from Afganistan to FYROM and hailing them op public television as their long lost cousins. (true story)

And about the tutoring Aristotle comment in the article, they obiously ingore the fact that the era after Alexanders conquests was called the Hellenistic period

Considering icons and depictions aren't allowed in Islam, I'd still bet that it would come down.

Id rather see Greece dedicate a statue to the ten thousand and to Xenophon along the Euphrates where they fought to dethrone a Persian King.

Besides the ancient Inhabitants of Mesopotamia were far more content with the Persian King than perhaps Alexanders successors. By that time they were well use to foreign invaders. It was more like Egypt and Anatolia to welcome the Greeks.

Why would they dedicate a statue to ten thousand mercenaries who fought in the service of a Persian Satrap seeking to become the Persian king himself?

As others have listed before Alexander (or Iskander as known there) has a pretty good reputation in those regions. While I would prefer to see a hospital or school built I doupt that statue will be as expensive.

Funny cause I've found plenty of depictions of Ali, Husayn, and other Companions of Muhammad in Islamic art, especially in Iranian art.

The Battle of Gaugamela took place between Alexander and Darius III of Achaemenid Persia near the present-day Iraqi city of Mosul. It resulted in a massive victory for the Macedonians.

Alexander (356 BC to 323 BC) was one of the most successful military commanders of all time and by the time of his death, had conquered most of the world known to the ancient Greeks—going as far up to India.

After the Battle of Gaugamela, Alexander proclaimed himself king of Asia at the age of 25.

The project ‘must symbolise the reciprocal influence between the people’ of Greece and Iraq, the Greek foreign minister said, adding that Athens was ready to provide some of the funding.

Alexander went native and you know it. He was accused of favoring his Persian subjects more than his Macedonians.

Anyhow, a statue of Iskander would surely be better-looking than one of Saddam or Bush.

Xenophon was a great strategist well beyond his years. Shame the Iraqis prob have no clue as to who he is. Anyway Why could be applied to Iskander as well. Why would they dedicate a statue to a Makedonian who dethroned their persian monarch and made himself King in his place.

The Ten Thousand fought for a Prince who many saw as the rightful ruler. Anyway realistically I know they would never do this but it be great if they did. I dont think there are any statues commemorating Xenophon when he was the one behind Alexanders conquest. It was Xenophon writings that convinced Greeks that might Persia was not invincible.
