Default "Greece wants Alexander the Great statue in Iraq"

"ATHENS - Greece on Tuesday discussed with Iraqi officials plans to build a statue to Alexander the Great in northern Iraq to mark a key 331 BC battle site which led to the fall of the Persian empire.

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis said she was involved in the talks along with Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari, who said: ‘It’s a great idea and we back it.’

The Battle of Gaugamela took place between Alexander and Darius III of Achaemenid Persia near the present-day Iraqi city of Mosul. It resulted in a massive victory for the Macedonians.

Alexander (356 BC to 323 BC) was one of the most successful military commanders of all time and by the time of his death, had conquered most of the world known to the ancient Greeks—going as far up to India.

After the Battle of Gaugamela, Alexander proclaimed himself king of Asia at the age of 25.

The project ‘must symbolise the reciprocal influence between the people’ of Greece and Iraq, the Greek foreign minister said, adding that Athens was ready to provide some of the funding.

Greece claims Alexander as part of its heritage, partly due to the fact that he was tutored by Aristotle."

Interesting story... I'm not really sure how to take it. I suppose the Iraqis might be altogether indifferent to any possible cultural connotations; it's not like Greece has any aspirations to Iraqi soil, and Alexander was technically fighting a Persian sovereign...

At the risk of de-railing the topic... "... partly due to the fact that he was tutored by Aristotle..."??? That's the best they could come up with? How about the fact that Alexander's entire cult of personality was based on tracing his ancestry and royal lineage back to such legendary notables as Achilles, Hercules, and/or Zeus himself?

    .... BAD move.

I much prefer Rhodes' idea to build the Colossus again.

Why do they call it most of the Greek known world when it was more like half?

Alexander the Great is an important figure in Islam, it can improve tourism, and the Greeks will probably pay for it so I don't see a problem.

might well invest more money to preserve the sites in Pompey, which is kinda falling apart...

What Alexandria did they call Iskandaria when they originally founded it?

It might be seen as a symbol of western military conquest in the middle east. I give it a 72% chance of being blown up.

Maybe, but now may not be the best time to erect a statue of a western conquerer in Iraq.

Wait I think that one was founded by Alexander.

I don't know the Iskander named after him.

We'd best tell them that Alexander was more than likely a homosexual, then. A giant statue of a homosexual near the religious centre of Mosul.

I cracked up at that. Although dont go on about how homosexuals werent really homosexuals back then because of cultural differences, I know that already.

Perhaps better reasoning than aristotle would be that current greece includes ancient macedonia?

The money could be better spent on the people there, rather than an over 2000 year belated Greek dick waving monument.
