Default The Last Kingdom - FACTION PREVIEW / WESSEX

    Kingdom of Wessex
    Saxon culture

The lordly Cerdingas of Wessex have ever been a race of kings, and nowhere is this more evident than in their royal family.

Of the five sons of King Æthelwulf, the wise Æthelberht is already the second to succeed to the throne, and his remaining brothers each hold the expectation of receiving the crown in turn. Either would make a fine ruler; Æthelred is a proud warrior, and Ælfred is a brilliant scholar.

Their path to greatness will not be easy, though. Three other Saxon kingdoms vie for supremacy of southern Britain, and must be subdued in order to unite the realm of England. In addition, the proud Celtic peoples of Wales, Scotland and Ireland remain independent, and have ever been a thorn in the side of English. Moreover, barbaric heathens have begun to raid from the north -- any King of Wessex desiring to be truly "great" will first have to confront them.

The House of Wessex holds the expectation of one day unifying the whole of England under their banner. If they are able to succeed in this undertaking, they will truly be rulers of the Last Kingdom.

    Stengths: Very strong heavy infantry.
    Weaknesses: Almost no cavalry.

Goal: Unite all England, conquer most of Wales, repel the Viking invaders.

    Starting position: 6 regions

    Capitals: Winceaster

    Heorthgeneats
    Infantry - Heavy - Two handed Axe+Shields

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

To be in the household guard of an Atheling did not mean you were the best warrior around, only that you were dutybound to reflect your leader’s standing. They were trusted men, some related by blood or marriage and some actual champions, others just old friends. Their equipment and backgrounds were varied and depending on the man whom they served, rewards were not always rich and glorious. But in standing closest to an Atheling in the battle line, nothing else mattered. They may not be as fine and noble as Gesithas and other Atheling units but in serving a lord of Atheling blood it was not expected. It was only expected that a hearthgeneat would live and die by his lord’s side. As the poet in the Battle of Maldon puts it so well: “Mind shall be mightier, heart the harder, courage the keener, though our strength fails us. Here lies our leader, dead in the dust. He who now longs to flee will lament forever.”

    Fyrd unit:

Hundradeflocc - *(Fyrd: only for saxons)
    Missile - Light - Javelin+Axe

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

An ancient institution is recorded even in the time of Tacitus, who documents in his ‘Germania’ the levy system of the Hundred. Chiefs were required by feudal law to provide in times of need a levy militia of a hundred hand picked men from each delegated district under his control. Each family provided a man for service. These farmers had the simplest of weaponry and no sense of warfare other than the means to defend themselves in a street brawl. Banded would support professional soldiers in major campaigns or in case of local troubles be led by a chief to keep the peace.
They are saxon peasants, these hurl javelins at their foes, but can fight at close quarters if necessary.

    Attack: 5 (AP)
    Defence: 4
    Charge: 2

Geoguthas - *(Fyrd: only for saxons)
    Spear - Light - Spear+Shields

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

To be born a Ceorl was not without its worries. Just because your family were tradesmen, horse breeders, blacksmiths or landowners did not mean that you would inherit the family business. When a Thegn called up the levy, folk would not send their best earner or breadwinner, they would send the youngest men of a large family. This was not without its oppurtunities however. A young ceorl man was well-fed, well-educated, with some military training, he had fair equipment and therefore some chance of survivng his first few engagements. Without any other career open to them Geoguth would fight hard and want to prove themselves to their lord who had honoured them with his favour by taking them from civilian life.
These troops are equipped with a spear, shield whitout to much armour.

    Attack: 4
    Defence: 12
    Charge: 2

Ceorlwerod - *(Fyrd: only for saxons)
    Infantry - Light/Heavy - Sword+Shields

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Ceorlwerod were the true middle class, landowners with a sizeable farm and connected family which supported slaves and lowerclasses working the fields around them, often lotted and hired out to thralls. The Churls were men of varying power and wealth yet all had good means to equip themselves for war, who could for example transport themselves to the levy gatherings by horse or even fight as light horsemen if required. They were dutybound to their local leaders, the Thegns, as well as bound by honour to protect their homes. They were no strangers to military service even if it was not their chosen way of life.
Ceorlwerod have armour and swords, and it is dangerous to the other infantrys.

    Building example:

    6. Agriculture line:

    Granary
You have built granaries in this region, specifically for cereal storage. This will increase the conditions of storage for this good.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

A granary, a facility built specifically for the purpose of storing grain, is an excellent choice for preserving food. It had the adequate characteristics to prevent humidity and the entrance of mice and other cereal-loving rodents. Being effective in preserving food, these granaries will help the local populace to overcome the periodic famines that ravaged medieval Europe.

    Bonus: Increase in population growth.

No need to say that the units look beautiful, really like the helmets.

For me the most impressive is not the quality of the units but the presentation of the preview. Few people do a throughout preview such as this.
