My pick goes to the USN of course. We currently account for more than half of the world's naval strength. No other nation has had that large of an advantage over the rest of the world. Britain may have had the two ship policy or whatever it was called, doubling the combined navies of her rivals, but the power she exerted on the other countries was nothing like the USN can exert on the rest of the world.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

Sulla, can you move this to the finger prints of the past?

I will of course pick the british navy, because they pioneered the use of air craft carriers

uhhh, wasn't the first aircraft carrier the "Langley"? An American Frigate, the "Jupiter" fitted with a wooden deck.

Bleh, I just ripped the quote off a book anyways.

Still I vote for the Brits simply because of their reputation and trafalger.

    Then Japan for Tsushima

We weren't the 1st best navy in the world. But, judging by pure track record and staggering statistical records, go blue. United States Navy.

Common mates from the other side of the pond. WWII alone was astonishing and simply unprecidented. Since then has been pure gravy to drive the point home.

Hmmm ... I think the British navy has been the most consistant over the ages, both in the quality and number of their ships and in the number of premium admirals .
Carthage, a thalassocracy, was over all pwned at sea during the first punic war by Rome, a land power only dabbling in the art of the war @ sea (but who learnt fast)
If carthage is included in the poll, why isn't Athen ?

Today's context ? The USN. Hardly anyone else has the sort of numbers, technological edge and the replacement capability.

Carthage, the Netherlands and Rome have all at one point dominated more that the US does today.

IMO Rome>Carthage, but the comparison between the Dutch and Rome is more difficult because the Dutch had ocean going ships, while Rome "only" controlled the Mediterranean, but Rome was more dominant in their own region.

In the end I voted for Rome.

United States Navy with its air power, hands down. Throw in the US Marines and they have the ability to strike with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy the United States' foreign policy.

The USN could devistate any modern navy in a straight up battle, I dont think that any other nation had that much on any of its rivals at any other time in history.
