  1. #1

Default Faction Thread - Teutonic Order

Organization of Teutonic Army (on example of the battle of Tannenberg 1410):

Grand Master / der Hochmeister (commander-in-chef)

Grand Marschal / der Ordensmarschall (deputy of the commander-in-chef, Komtur of Konigsberg)

    - Vicemarschal
    - Main Ensign

Grand Hospitaler / der Oberstspittler (chef of medical service, Komtur of Elbing)

Grand Attend-ant / der Obersttrappier (chef of suply / stock)

Grand Komtur / der Grosskomtur (chef of camp / camps, main steward, deputy of Grand Master in governance of the country)

    - Small Komtur (chef of security guard)
    - Trumpeter of the Camp
    - der Obersttressler (chef of trade, Komtur of Kiszpork)

    Organization of military units:

    A) Teutonic Banners:

    - Brothers Knights (Ritterbruders) - main commanders of units and heavy cavalry with lances
    - Half-Brothers - heavy cavalry, other commanders of cavalry units
    - Subject Brothers - other members of cavalry units formed by Brother-Knights / Half-Brothers, members of other cavalry units or commanders of infantry units

    - Subjects of the Teutonic Order = knights, peasants, townsmen of different nations (Germans, Poles, native Prussians, Lithuanians, Samogitians)

    B) Mercenary Banners:

    - Domestic Mercenaries - soldiers hired for money in homeland, in the state of Teutonic Order - Germans, Poles, native Prussians, Lithuanians, Samogitians - inhabitants of cities / countryside, townsmen, peasants and knights
    - mercenaries from countries and regions like: Bohemia, Germany, Silesia, Samogitia, Lithuania and other countries and regions

    C) Banners of Knights Guests (knights - crusaders, volunteers - in service of the Teutonic Order - mainly from Western Europe and Germany, in earlier period - XIII century and first half of XIV century - also large numbers of knights from Poland)

    D) Other and special units (for example Struters = Lactrunculi - bandits and criminals in service of the Teutonic Order - fighting for "Holy justice" )

The most numerous group of military forces of the Teutonic Order were Subjects of the Teutonic Order - knights, peasants, townsmen in cavalry and infantry units (vast majority of all soldiers).

Population and population density of Teutonic Order, Poland and neighbouring areas in XIV century (in period around 1333 - 1370 - when Casimir the Great was the King of Poland, however, some of data given below is for later period - around 1400, beginning of XV century):

    I. Population density around year 1351:

Red point = 31 or more per 1 square km (region of city Wiślica):

II. Provinces & regions - Territory (area / borders between provinces & regions are shown as they were in 1340):

    A. Provinces and territories of former or present Kingdom of Poland in 1340:

    1 - Greater Poland - 57,900 square kilometres
    2 - Lesser Poland - 55,900 square kilometres
    13 - Mazovia - 31,800 square kilometres
6 - Silesia (without Land of Opawa) - I'm not shure but around 40,000 - 42,000 square kilometres (this includes Upper Silesia - 17,650 square kilometres)

    3 - Red Ruthenia
    4 - Land of Chełm
    5 - Podolia

    3 + 4 + 5 = 91,000 square kilometres

    B. Provinces of Teutonic Order in 1340:

    7 - Pomerelia - around 14,000 square kilometres
    8 - Land of Chełmno - 4,700 - 5,000 square kilometres
    9 - Ermland (Warmia) - 4,250 square kilometres
    10 - Prussia (Eastern) - 32,000 square kilometres
    11 - Land of Marienburg - 2,100 square kilometres
    12 - Neumarkt

Livonia & Estonia (all territories of former Livonian Order) - 114,000 square kilometres

III. Population of provinces and regions:

    A. Population of provinces of present or former Kingdom of Poland around years 1351 - 1340 (in 1400 it was slightly bigger*):

    1. - 600,000 (average 10,36 ppl./1 square km)
    2. - 450,000 (average 8 ppl./1 square km)**
    13. - 300,000 (average 9,434 ppl./1 square km)
    6. Upper Silesia - 150,000, including 23,000 in towns / cities (average 8,5 ppl./1 square km)

    3 + 4 + 5 - figures vary - between nearly 500,000 - 300,000 (average nearly 5,5 - 3,3 ppl./1 square km), numbers closer to 500,000 than to 300,000 are more probable.

    Notes A:

**Western part of Lesser Poland - Land of Cracow - had got very big population density (in region of Wiślica - red point - even over 30 ppl./1 square km), but eastern part of Lesser Poland - Land of Lublin - had got on average only around 1 person per 1 square km - mainly due to numerous Tartar / Mongol and Lithuanian invasions of this region which were taking place since the second half of XIII century.

    B. Provinces of Teutonic Order - population around years 1400 - 1370 (in 1340 - 1351 it was slightly smaller*):

    7. - 130,000 (average 9,3 ppl./1 square km)
    8. - 80,000 (average 17 - 16 ppl./1 square km)

    9 + 10 + 11 = 270,000** (average 7 ppl./1 square km)

    Livonia & Estonia - figures vary pretty much - between 250,000 / 300,000 and 684,000

    Notes B:

**The majority of them in western parts of these 3 provinces / regions.

    Notes III:

*So called "Black death" did not cause any significant decrease of population in former or present provinces of Kingdom of Poland and state of Teutonic Order, as well as in Czech Kingdom (only several and in some regions even few percent of the whole population died - and these casualties were very quickly catched up on).

IV. Nationalities in provinces of Teutonic Order (in period around 1400 - 1370):

    7. Pomerelia = 30,000 Germans + 100,000 Poles (including Kashubians, Pomerelians)
    8. Land of Chełmno = 40,000 - 45,000 Germans + 40,000 - 35,000 Poles
    9. + 10. + 11. = 130,000 - 120,000 Germans (mainly in western regions), 140,000 - 120,000 native Prussians (mainly in eastern and central regions), the remaining part are Lithuanians, Samogitians (mainly in eastern regions), Poles (mainly in south-western regions).

    Total 7. + 8. + 9. + 10. + 11. = 480,000, including:

    Germans = 190,000 - 205,000
    Poles (including Kashubians, Pomerelians) = 135,000+ - 140,000+
    Native Prussians = 120,000 - 140,000
Others (vast majority of whom were Lithuanians and Samogitians) = up to 30,000

Livonia & Estonia - in cities and towns almost 100% were Germans (vast majority) and Danes (minority), in countryside almost 100% were natives, Baltic peoples.

    V. Nationalities in former and present provinces of Kingdom of Poland (in period around 1333 / 1340 - 1370):

    13. - vast majority are Poles (Mazovians), but there is significant Lithuanian minority and - smaller - but also significant - Ruthenian minority, as well as some Jews.
    1. + 2. - vast majority are Poles, but there is significant German minority and also - smaller - Jewish minority. In province numer 2. there is also a Ruthenian minority. In province number 1. (Greater Poland) the majority of Poles are Greater Poles, but there is also a minority of Poles from Silesia, and - smaller - minority of Poles from Lesser Poland.

    6. Silesia - the distinct majority are Poles, the remaining, very significant, part are mainly Germans and Bohemians - there is also a significant minority of Jews (Germans and Bohemians live mainly in south-western part of Silesia - in some areas of this part of Silesia, there are more Germans than Poles). The city of Wrocław (main city of Silesia) is inhabited mainly by the Poles (over 50%), but Germans are nearly half of its population.

3 + 4 + 5 - there is an ethnic mix of Ruthenians (the distinct majority), Poles, Jews, Germans, Armenians, Hungarians, some Bohemians, some Lithuanians + some members of other nations (probably including Tartars).

VI. Percent of population living in towns and cities (but in different periods so numbers cannot be compared one with another):

Kingdom of Poland (first half of XIV century / around year 1351) - 14%
Upper Silesia (half of XIV century) - 15% - 23,000 people
Teutonic Order (year 1410 - so beginning of XV century) - over 20%

This amount was constantly increasing in each of those states / regions listed above.

VI. Percent of population living in towns and cities (but in different periods so numbers cannot be compared one with another):

Kingdom of Poland (beginning of XIV century) - 14%
Upper Silesia (half of XIV century) - 15% - 23,000 people
Teutonic Order (year 1410 - so beginning of XV century) - over 20%
Kingdom of Poland (year 1582) - over 25%

This amount was constantly increasing in each of those states / regions listed above.

Hi! Here some more info on population / provinces / cities and towns of the Teutonic Order (as well as some info on similar things in Kingdom of Poland):

Both our Mods are in personal alliance so I think that I can give a link instead of rewriting / copying the same :

And here is the area of the state of the Teutonic Order in Prussia and Livonia (unfortunately not the whole Livonia can be seen in this map) around year 1301 (Polish-Teutonic border between Gdańsk and Marienburg is not clear - I found three slightly different versions of this part of the Teutonic border):

Orange - borders between provinces - Land of Chełmno, Land of Marienburg, Ermland, so called Proper Prussia [East Prussia] and of course Livonia.

Actually - I think that the proper name of the faction in the game should be Monastic State of the Teutonic Order :hmmm:.

What do you think about it?

It is not shure if Teutonic Knights even took part in that battle (if they took part, there was no more than few dozens of them).

But for shure Knights Templars took part (a dozen or so knights + supporting men).

Exactly. And all 'western' pictures of battle of Legnica that I can see shows Teutons fighting Mongols... This is rediculous! It was battle between Poles and Mongols with unknown participation of Teutons...
