    Default A Change in Reputation....Please Don't

** If this is posted in the wrong forum, my apologies, please move it**

    Supporters: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The Curia proposes a new reputation system:

In this system, the reputation giver's reputation points go down by 1 each time he gives reputation to another user, while the added points to that user are 2.

    Additional provision:

A user may not give reputation points to somebody who has given them reputation points without first handing out reputation points to somebody else.

This will greatly change the rep system, in my opinion for the better. Rep will become much more valuable. People will only rep when they truly like a post or work somebody has done. New rep will still be added into the system each time somebody reps. With more valuable rep, but also more 'transferable' rep. The additional provision is so not to render this system useless: seeing as this system is greatly in favour of the receiver the receiver would feel obliged to rep the giver back, and this contradicts the whole decision. As an added bonus this would limit rep whores somewhat, or at the least stop return rep which I see as pointless (rep should be given for good posts or contributions, not for giving rep). See this example

There is currently a motion up for vote on a mechanism to basically reduce REP-Whoring...Or so that is the idea...

    1. If it ain't broke.....Don't fix it. Hallo..It ain't broke....

    2. So what If there's a guy/gal walking around looking like a French Admiral that's got nothing to say. You know and I know that that individual is composed of hot air, Do them a favor, don't bust in on their delusion. They need their's alot more than you do...

    3. "No one is better than anyone else"...It doesn't matter if you have NO Rep or have shorted out the system. What matters is what you have to say or do.{moodding,etc.}

My apologizes I'm not feeling very eloquent tonight, but I'm not about to keep silent on this either.

If your against this motion, now's the time to speak up.

    Regards,

    Mega

Edit: Let me add this...I remember when I got my first +Rep{Thanks Kippy K} and my first Rep Circle. It was a big deal to me cuz I felt I had earned them. Those of you that know me know the I place GREAT empathsis on encouragement as a developmental tool and to promote togetherness.

This proposal and others like it would rob many young ones of the joys that I was fortunate enough to experience.

I think that you don't have to worry Mega because I don't really see what's wrong with reps. I've read about that fact in the thread [Decision] Reputation Change and I don't understand the meaning...

Who cares about Reputation? Is there any award for the one who has 200 crowns? Are we going to ban the one who has only 1 ring? Is it really a crime to give or take +rep? Does the rep-whoring hurts our feelings about something? Does a pack of crowns makes someone special? Is there a competition about the most famous crowns keeper?

There is only one answer: No.

It seems like it's a game between the forumers and it's known as the "Crowns and Rings". And trust me, people enjoy this feature. Is it really necessary to take it away from them?

I wasn't aware people were complaining about others' rep. Why? Is there a contest or something?

Any system put in place will be abused by someone. I agree most of us that have been around for a while really don't care about how many crowns or rings are under your avatar. With that said it is nice to see some of your friends appreciate your time and work giving to the community and show it by clicking that little green button. Rep should stay the way it is now. New members see it and it makes atleast some of them stick around and contribute and before you know it thier hooked and REP doesn't matter as much. The ones that hang around just to rep whore usually don't last long anyway.

I don't want my rep to be gone by giving it to someone else. I think it's a bad idea.

I wouldent worry it does not look like it will get enough support to even have a chance of passing.

I agree here with Mega I will support this motion as I think that Rep dosen't hurt anyone and if some people don't like it they can just enable it, STFU..... And look elsewhere.

I can see the problem with rep. Some people do get discouraged when they have been around doing joint campaigns or AAR's and don't recieve any acknowledgement. It's that whole popularity disease. People do get affected by it. Even those of you who say you dont care have many rep's and even when you recieve a new one you feel, even if only a bit special because you were ackowledged. But, to each his own. Rep whoring is cool as long as you dont contract some std. lol sorry guys I had to do it.

+ rep message is a great thing to quickly show his gratitude or awe to somebody. That's why I think it should stay.

However there's no need to "fix" it, like Mega said.

Dont worry, from the looks of it the Curia wont pass a thing. It doesnt even have enough support to go to a vote.

Hopefully it doesn't. I don't think there really is much of a contest with rep, but for me, like I assume it does for many out there, it shows that people actually appreciated the work and contribution that we make out there. I don't deem it as a way to show whether one person is better than another, but more just like a symbol of good work and sense of achievement.

I just read this, i'll quote the proposal.

In this system, the reputation giver's reputation points go down by 1 each time he gives reputation to another user, while the added points to that user are 2.
A user may not give reputation points to somebody who has given them reputation points without first handing out reputation points to somebody else.
    That... is... awful.

If people are getting annoyed at banners full of crowns, why not create a different, slightly bigger crown that replaces 5 crowns? But yes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

To be honest, I think this will actually encourage "rep-whoring", because most people will REFUSE to give rep because they'll lose it. Similarly, that causes a cyclic effect. Less and less people give rep, and the ones who give it out then realise that they won't get rep back, and then stop giving it, and eventually, the whole rep system grinds to a halt. In effect, it just means that instead of lots of rep meaning you've made multiple contributions / good posts, it means that if you've not got much, you're probably not greedy and are repping others!

Looks like it won't pass though with that opposition, so seems a big fuss over nothing.

I don't deem it as a way to show whether one person is better than another, but more just like a symbol of good work and sense of achievement.
This - I barely look at rep other people have gotten now, though I know when I was a newbie here and didn't have rep, I did notice it. Since then i've not really looked at it for the most part, except just why people have given me rep, not getting it itself, but why.

I very seriously doubt that this will pass...if it ever gets to a vote. It is completely unnecessary and accomplishes absolutely nothing. Once every couple months or so, somebody else imagines a problem that doesn't exist with the rep system and creates a proposal that, much like this one, does nothing to fix this imagined problem. These things are really nothing to fret over. They always fail miserably...if they even make it to a vote.

I know that the proposal has worthy aims, but I am not convinced it is the right thing to do.

Little rep-rings of three people passing rep around in a circle could build up some epic numbers.

Also if rep is used up when given then you won't be able to tell the difference between the generous and the merely-unloved.

Personally I would like to see rep-allowance reduced to just one a day. However this would cause problems with people who use rep to reward contributions to forum games and competitions, so there would need to be a system of exceptions for "official rep-giving". Such an added administrative burden is not likely to endear my proposal to staff in its current form.

I still don't see what the real problem is with the present rep system. I have not yet seen one legitimate reason that the system needs any change whatsoever.

Rep's meaningless, we may as well leave it that way as there's no way to make it meaningful that a majority of people would agree to.

I'd like the option when giving rep to give a neutral comment, and have no limits on the amount of times you can give these during a day, and no restrictions on who you can give them to. I like to be able to give a short comment on a post to the person who made it, without making a real post of my own in the thread (for various reasons, most often that a real post would be off-topic).
