Never use special symbols within the curly brackets (the data reference) - in Geomod that is the left side entry. The error above happens when the entry in descr_strat doesn't have a match in the string.bin file.
I know it (now...) but I wanted to know which files I must change to repair it because geomod won't open until I change this ü everywhere
My main issue is that I don't want to restart my new map from the beginning, so I'm searching for an alternative way to clean this error

Sorry double post
Can I use the Geomod to just display a map_heights.tga that I've created?(Although I've not created all the other files related with climates, resources and so on)
Your friendly neighbourhood modder
There are three TXT files where the special character may crop up, to find it simply look for a phrase from the name that does not include a special character. Don't rely on it as the toll may have totally scrambled the name, you may have to manually look for it.
- descr_regions
- descr_strat
- imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names
Correcting the entry in all three will fix the error. It's most likely in descr_strat going by the error message.
---------------------------
You need a complete set of files to display anything in Geomod, see the manual which files are required.
Well, I corrected the special character in all those files (replaced ü by u), but it still displays me the same error message over and over again...
I don't know where to search for the error, it seems Geomod sees the ü even as I removed it, I don't understand and it bothers me a lot
I think this link should work : https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vz...kvWkfTGciVghEo
Before you ask, I use the "World of Ice and Fire" map and data of SoulGamesInc and Parafix with some modifications (mainly descr_strat ones but it worked well) as a base (my mod is for personal use only, of course).
And, well, most names I added in the map are French (or French-sounding) because I am too
descr_regions was saved in UTF-8 BOM format instead of ANSI. After fixing that** the tool froze and crashed at 69% - which is fairly rare, it has to do with units and I am not sure what aspect of it - could be a misspelling in descr_strat or something in the EDU.
** open file with Notepad++, click 'encoding' at the top and choose 'encode in ANSI', save
Edit:
Sorry to say, but there seems to be some sloppy coding, have a look at my error check:
Spoiler for errors:
Fixing the commas in descr_strat still had the tool crash at 69%. I failed to run two other checkers as they encountered unfamiliar formatting that I couldn't trace (bovine checker and gracul's EDU checker).
Edit2:
There were 45 instances of duplicated attributes in the EDU: stakes, stakes
Fixing that eventually allowed the tool to load completely, throwing up a bunch of missing name errors.
Definitely sloppy coding, don't think it's yours.
Spoiler for Geomod log:
Many thanks for the quick answer (and for repairing my mistake) !
I haven't touched the units for now and it never happened to me. Before this "ü" error, I had several message saying some units were not recognized (as Parafix and Soul used only part of the AOPK units as a base for their work if I remember well), but it never froze Geomod that way...
Well, sorry for double post but it seems the problem solved himself... after launching Geomod three times, I got the error messages of unrecognized units but I can skip it and continue to work on my map
Again, many thanks for helping me !
Sorry, didn't see you'd edited your post
You're right, these errors are not mine, I had them since the beginning. I think it's linked with Para and Soul using only parts of the AOPK data for their mod. These are units which -as far as I know- do not appear for players. It also seems the tool can open completely even without fixing the double attributes thing
Anyway, thanks a lot for helping me with this, you've been very kind
The thread states multiple times that there is source code available, could someone or you big daddy provide me with a link please?
Check in the Medieval II Total War\tools\Geomod directory after installing - it's the geomod.pb file plus the content of the include sub directory.
geomod.txt.strings.bin is the supporting text file - it can be converted\edited with the included BinEditor.
I can't recall off hand which compiler was used for Geomod but it is mentioned in the thread.
Note to others if you have problems with the mouse or moving the map in the display: Go into the desktop shortcut's compatibility tab and click on 'run compatibility troubleshooter'. Click on 'Try recommended settings' when prompted.
You will most likely end up with compatibility set to 'Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) and a tick mark in the 'Change high DPI settings' (Program DPI). The latter will fix the mouse issue.
