Tie now, but I was kidding. We've got a pretty good debate going on right now.

It will be interesting to see if there is any worthwhile new counter arguments. I've yet to see one hold against even the most cursory inspection.

I agree with you Caradog although I don't really like either of them classical music has more soul more passion and much more talent I mean after all its were we get rock from and all rock from elvis to pantera is always great and will always take more talent then rap.

Caradog: Are you seriously categorising the entirety of 'computer' (read: digital) art as bad? Not only are you apparently unaware of the history of Hip-Hop/Rap but it seems you are using another form you seem to be entirely ignorant of (and have cherry-picked comparisons for) as a parallel. How about comparing this 'inferior' style by people such as Rick Baker, with good, award-winning, 'real' art such as Tracey Emin....

Attila: Slay this entire misguided concept.

I am with Caradog on this one. I do believe that rap is music though, but in an extremely low level. It is easily comprehensible too, and this is one of the reasons behinf its popularity. Complex and quality music can only be understood and appreciated by the few. Caradog summed up my thoughts pretty well, and it will be interesting to see how attilavolciak07 responds to this.

Caradog's post was filled with bad MTV-rap generalisations and misconceptions. There's plenty of complex creative non-commercial rap that is obviously not just done for the money: see Company Flow for a start. And plenty of rap is much more complex than a lot of rock (especially punk, but that never gets as much hate)

The idea that complex music is somehow better is annoying too.

This is more haunting & hypnotic than nearly anything more complex than it.

And plenty of 'complex' music is terrible anyway: see Sleep Terror.

I never said that any complex music is good, it can be horrible. But what I define as "complex" is far more well, complex than what you may think. And unless you are a musician, you cannot really define complexity in music.

A very simple piece of music can sound haunting and hypnotic. That is not among the criteria of complexity.

A simple piece of music can also be very enjoyable, as long as there is a feeling expressed through it, and is not done via weird "noises" created by computers.

Music today, mainly rap, is simple boring, predictable and without any musicality. There is not a feeling expressed in it, and this is why I despise it.

Many 'complex' pieces, particularly in more classical styles, tend to be mere soulless exercises in mathematics rather than any 'art'...

As opposed to the weird "noises" created by rubbing a piece of taught string, or blowing down a tube? How often in history has the latest instrument being with confusion, disdain or even outright contempt? If it isn't someone hitting a rock with another rock, it's just some new-fangled corruption.

I cannot think of a way to adequately reply to that without direct personal assaults of 'are you living in a box?' or 'pull your head out of your.. vibraphone', so I'll just say it is your loss. I hope you express the same level of enthusiasm for the dull, pointless, repetitive, predictable, fraudulent 'Tallis Fantasia' (yes, I know there is even worse examples than that, but thankfully I can't remember them off the top of my head).
