This is your 10 o'clock evening news report...I'm Sundance McKid. Tonight's top story, 3 billion die as a freak womrhole opens in Manhattan and a huge pan-dimensional being rampages across the globe. Superman is said to be stunned and at a loss what to do, while Lex Luther has been quoted saying, "Holy ****, even I wouldn't do this." The monster is expected to randomly disappear for no reason overnight, most experts have stated.

In other news, Grand Lord Belisarius, Demon of the Underworld and Spawn of Satan, has started a TWC-themed podcast, wih music and fancy effects. Let this editor be the first to say that it in no way conpetes with the fantastic prose of the Helios and that we in no way fear for our position as No.1 Common Community reporters. In fact, even now, the special ninja-robot-nazi-dinosaur-assassins move closer to the Podcast HQ...

In financial news, Iceland screwed the world over and some money has been put somewhere. I'd hire someone who actually understood what was going on economically, but the current reporters' salary stands at $0 per person, and seeing as, as far as I can tell, the dollar has somehow become worth less than its worth (:/), I just don't have the funds.

And I've just been informed we've had some breaking news from the Basement, where Freddie, our resident techy, has lost his Playboy and thus been forced to while away the time helping people with their technical conundrums. Freddie?

The Helios without a Basement report!?! Not on my shift pal. Once again I bring you news from one of the most technical parts of the forum, the Basement. Now then, you guys have been crying over all sorts of things whilst I’ve been gone but fear not I’m still around to help you out (my prices are 1 rep for initial consolation, 2 reps for advice on parts and 4 reps for tell you how to install XP onto a SATA hard drive without a floppy disk, all major alt accounts accepted to expedite payment in a timely fashion).

Feel the need for speed? Rome Clone certainly has (after finally fixing his card issue I mentioned in my last article). If you want a free performance boost to your PC without having to overclock your CPU or video card I suggest you read this. The article is well laid out, easy to understand and supported by helpful videos. Next time you see Roman Clone be sure to rep him.

A very resourceful Roderick Random has rescued an old Dell 600 server and plans to use for gaming but is looking for advice on what video card he install on his machine.

The current graphics card is a Nvidia Quadro FX500/FX600 (128 MB). I didn't realize the implications when I bought the machine, but it has only one PCI-X (extended, not express) and 4 standard PCI slots. The current graphics card is in the PCI-X slot.

Everything works OK, but it would be nice to have better graphics quality. Can anyone recommend a better PCI-X or PCI graphics card? It seems that most of the current cards on the market are PCI-E.

Sadly that only leaves him with the option of trying to get a decent PCI video card but that the technology equivalent of trying to find a decent car made by British Layland. The PCI bus for high end video cards has been redundant since the days of the 3D FX Voodoo Banshee, the interface simply doesn’t have enough bandwidth the cope with all the data need for today’s games.

In my previous report I mentioned KillerX guy had a problem with his monitor shutting down, he has updated his thread and has managed to resolve the issue.

That’s all from me for this show and if you’re still reading by this point then you really ought go out more. Bye all.

Thanks Freddie, boring and predictable, very nice work. Now, we've been taking your letters and emails all throughout that report and the responses have been delightful -- "Shut up and get to the good bit" -- that ones from Shirley, CA -- and the eloquent "Shut it you smartass computer bastard", again, thanks for those, guys. Now, here's Elzabar, who began last week and as such has become a real woman, with his first bra as a present from the team. Elzabar, you're up, honey.

    The Coliseum
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
That's right, I'm still here. You can't get rid of Elzabar that easily. Well, in truth, I'd be long gone by now, if it weren't for the charm of the Editor, and those damned handcuffs. Oh, right, reporting. Well, I've hired some help of my own, not that I need it...

It would seem Herr FieldMarshall Rommel never actually died, he was merely abducted by the Helios team, and put away until the time was right. That time has come, and the FieldMarshall has finally grasped the many tricks of the English language. With his great strategical genius, Rommel has done a report on the galaxy in the thirty seventh century. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Erwin Rommel's most excellent report on the Ancient Empire, arguably the greatest faction in the thirty seventh century galaxy.

First off, maybe when you're clicking on the new post button, some thread appears on top with the weird name of the some faction, some of you think "Oh, maybe a fantasy mod, lets check it out.", or the thread “Fleet Movements”, at first, “Oh must be a thread concerning the accuracy of ship movements in ETW”. Tough luck kid, its not. You’ve just stumbled into the realm of Stellar Alliances, located in the Coliseum Sub-Forum, a world of its own, or in a more accurate term, a GALAXY of its own. With its own factions ranging from fish people (Zeuxuans) to lizard people (Trandoshans), where there’s a faction that has sponges as the main race. Of course there’s humans, 7, last count. The rest are whatever race the people here can imagine. This is a short intro of one of those factions.

    The Ancient Empire (Non-Human)

Simple name isn’t it? With 22 Planets and 3 colonies, it is undoubtedly one of the “super” factions around the SA Galaxy. Created by Sidmen, the description of the “beings” of the Empire is a good read; he put a lot of effort to it to flesh out a faction of sponges that covers itself in metal. The faction started when the current SA started by Turn 1 so it has a good lead. But with shrewd movements and cunning decisions it has made itself one of the strongest out there. It has defeated already another faction and the Empire has faithful allies.

The main race is composed of what Sid can devise down his head, Sponge-like sentient beings that can form themselves in human shape just for the sake that it’s common around the galaxy.
“While the Imperials look humanoid, they share nothing else in common with the rest of the galaxy. Even their humanoid shape isn't a commonality with the rest of the galactic species. Naturally, Imperials appear to be a highly energetic and active sponge-like creature. The imperial consciousness, and 'brain activity' is spread all throughout this sponge-like matter. In this stage, the Imperial is aware - and possesses some remarkable abilities. Early Sponge-state Imperials have the ability to manipulate magnetic fields, and process complex thoughts, as the state matures and grows - its magnetic strength grows and it begins to be able to reach out with its mind and communicate with other minds.”
As you can see, ladies and gentlemen, Erwin Rommel has worked long and hard on this. But that won't be all, he'll be back to report on more factions, and bring you all closer to the galaxy that is Stellar Alliances. And speaking of Stellar Alliances, I bring you all a report on the recent events in the galaxy.

Since last Helios, there's been quite a fair amount of action in the galaxy, despite my own absence for a large part of the week. Two wars have gone on in the South West quadrant of the galaxy, one of which is just beginning. The Mercantile Republic of Sek went to war against the somewhat familiar Socialist faction, the USSSR. The War was quite costly to both sides, as well as several mercenary groups which hired themselves out. The socialist and seperatist revolutions, which occured in the Colonial Federation of Kalmar, turned out to be funded by another government, Priscus Aemilius, which led to the next war.

On that solemn note, I will leave the milky way and the thirty seventh century. To long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

*Star Wars music begins playing, audience is silent*
Thermian Squad was the brainchild of General Richard Radcliff, commander of the planetary garrison of Thermia. Following the Thermian rebellion, where nearly a third of the native Thermian garrison sided with the rebels, it became clear that Thermian troops couldn't be relied upon to keep the planet secure in the name of the Empire, but requesting foreign troops would increase costs (thus decreasing his salary).

General Radcliff then came to a remarkable decision: He would keep the Thermian militias, but hire commando squads composed of foreign mercenaries to weed out any insurrections. Thermian Squad is the first of these merc squads, and you are a part of it. Pulled from all sides of the Galactic Empire, you have come to Thermia highly recommended by previous employers.

Meeting for the first time, Thermian Squad has been assembled in a dropship on its way to a separatist HQ...
The Thermian Squad soon met resistance, four rebel soldiers ordering them to surrender. Lucien, a stubborn Mandolorian, didn't wait for the count of three, but fired at one of the rebel soldiers, wounding him severely. The rebel soldiers returned fire, and still, the battle rages on.

I'm getting confused with this jumping back and forward in time now, as now we go to the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons. Ephialtes the Dog has his hands full running two campaigns of D&D. The Diviuk Forest, where Alvin, aka Gandalf, leads a party in a hunt for the werewolf, and the DunHill Market, where three adventurers are tasked with the protection of Edgar's pigs.

And now, I go back to the Your Best Jokes (Rep may be awarded...), where VLAD FELIX still continues to make us laugh with his hilarious jokes. And here is one of his jokes:
A couple was invited to a swanky masked Halloween Party. She got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the party alone. He being a devoted husband protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed, and there was no need of his good time being spoiled by not going.
So he took his costume and away he went. The wife, after sleeping soundly for about an hour, awakened without pain and, as it was still early, she decided to go the party.
Since her husband did not know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him.
She joined the party and soon spotted her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice chick he could, and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there. His wife sidled up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he left his partner high and dry and devoted his time to the new stuff that had just arrived. She let him go as far as he wished; naturally, since he was her husband.
Finally, he whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed, so off they went to one of the cars and had a little bang. Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away, went home, put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what kind of explanation he would make for his behavior.
She was sitting up reading when he came in, and she asked what kind of a time he had. He said:
    - Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you're not there.
    - Did you dance much?
    - I'll tell you, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the den and played poker all evening. But you're not going to believe what happened to the guy I loaned my costume to.......
Sadly, there isn't much else to report on in the Coliseum; I want to save some stuff for the next Helios!
That bra is working wonders, Elzabar's estrogen really kicked in on that article! Now we have Thanatos here in the studio with us to tell us about the current state of world politics and why he still bothers reporting on it when we all know he preaches doom and destruction...

Welcome, once more, to the Political Mudpit, our wonderful and dear cesspool of enlightened thought!
First up, we have the PM’s reaction to the recent deadly attack on Turkish soldiers.

    Ottoman gave the bad news:

Turkey began burying the 15 soldiers killed in Friday’s bloody attack by outlawed PKK separatists as country’s civilian and military leaders vowed to step up efforts to end terror. Tens of thousands of people gathered around the country to attend the funerals and protest terror. (UPDATED)

The flag-draped coffins of the killed soldiers were carried on the shoulders of fellow soldiers and family members amid calls for tougher action against the outlawed terror organization.

The large crowds gathered waved flags and shouted, "Damn the PKK, the martyrs are immortal," ahead of the service.

President Abdullah Gul attended a funeral service held in the western city of Eskisehir, while Erdogan and Foreign Trade Minister Kursad Tuzmen participated in ceremonies in the central city of Kirikkale and Mersin province in the south, respectively.

The fighting, the bloodiest this year, prompted calls for Ankara to hit back at the outlawed PKK who use the Kurdish-run autonomous north of Iraq as a springboard for attacks on Turkish targets across the border.

    ANKARA'S DECISIVE RESPONSE

After emergency talks in Ankara late Saturday, civilian and military leaders vowed to stamp out the PKK, considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

"Our struggle against terrorism will be pursued under all conditions and above all other concerns through effective cooperation between state bodies and every measure will be implemented with determination," they said in a statement.

Friday's attack came ahead of a critical voting in the Turkish parliament on a new proposal on to extend for another year a mandate giving its military authorization for cross-border operations against PKK bases in northern Iraq.

Under a one-year parliamentary authorization obtained last October, the army has carried out several air strikes and a week-long ground offensive against PKK targets, using intelligence passed on by NATO ally United States.

Turkey’s General Staff is set to hold a news conference Sunday about the attack and the military’s counter-terrorism operations in southeastern Turkey and in northern Iraq.
Rome kb8 stated his thoughts on the matter:

Dogukan responded with his theory, to which Giorgios in turn replied:

Who knows? All we can do is hope.

Moving on, we have a much hotter topic, the idea that Islamic Propaganda is being thrust upon the American people.

Wilder put the news up for all:

I recently did a Google search of "under taught history" with the hope of gleaning some opinions on important history that I don't know (yes, I know I'm a nerd, I am as god made me. Actually, I was hoping to learn a bit about the northern crusades, of which information seems remarkably scarce, but I'm sidetracking myself...

Here's the thing, the first page that comes up is this, which is an article proclaiming that public schools in Oregon are teaching "Islamic values":

Now, there are a few nitpicky points that I agree with the article writer about (i.e. that the Taj Mahal is a beautiful building is an opinion, not a fact), but I couldn't help put be a bit angered by his obtuseness, and not just the fact that he abbreviated Oregon incorrectly. I am from Oregon and also was taught the history and some of the cultural tenets of Islam in high school, but the whole tone of the the article was, well, wrong. So what, if we learn about Islamic stuff? In the same couple of months that they taught us about that we also learned (in equal measure, if not more) about Judaism and Christianity. Is Islam so evil that it poses a danger to even learn about it?

    Really?

And then some other things struck me. First, I am from Portland, Oregon, which is, admittedly the opposite end of the state than Nyssa, as well being different in size, demographics, and political makeup, but that doesn't change the fact that all Oregon schools are subject to the same curriculum regulation. So why on earth did Mr. Unruh not mention that and why did he paint the picture that this was endemic to Nyssa?

Then I continued to the part where he laments that the textbooks claim that Muslims have made advancements in science (gasp!); Which, lets face it, is true.

I'm an atheist, and have no real fondness for Islam, but the recent Conservative cries of "our kids are learning multiculturalism" have been ringing increasingly stale. After all, if other cultures exist, and school is meant to teach us, what's the problem? It's a bit like saying that teaching evolution is dangerous because it might make people question god. This is laughable not because it is probably not true, but because in the land of academia, and IMHO, life, their is no higher purpose then truth. If a certain knowledge leads us to make us act like monkeys, or use drugs, or defect to Al qaeda, or even, god forbid, watch MTV, so be it.

    anywhoo, our thoughts?

PS, I will concede the point that facts about religions are ideally taught in anthropology and not history but you have to remember classes like that don't exist in most places.
    Deep_Red agreed:

Strattios, however, brought up an interesting point:

    b) If your going to do one religion with such depth, you have to do them all.
    c) Why are they giving Islam such depth when it isn't even our culture?
Wilder responded with his own thoughts:

Quote Originally Posted by Wilder View Post

I doubt that the teachers from Nyssa (which is a tiny town on the Idaho border) are railing against the any Christianity in schools. Now, I admit that on the state level, there are some people who, in the righteous name of political correctness, want no religion mentioned, confusing a true understanding of history with sanitized dates and numbers. I certainly do not agree with those folks, but the article makes no mention of the state education board.

Secondly, while I can't speak for Nyssa personally when I learned this stuff I think they did a pretty good job of doing an even spread of the Abrahamic religions. I should also mention that it was in the context of a near east history unit, not "let's learn about Yahweh". So when the Jews came on the scene we learned about Judaism and the Christians, Christianity, and the Muslims, Islam, as well as Zoroastrianism, and various polytheistic religions. As such within this unit, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, African Animism, and Scientology (along with all others) did not play a large historical role in the period and area we were studying and thus were not hugely relevant to our class at the time. Thus the issue is not that these schools are teaching only so-and-so religion and not others, but rather they are teaching so-and-so history and not others. Now I do wish (really, really) that we had learned more about India, East Asia, Polynesia, Subsaharan Africa, and Native American civ, but there's nothing new about that, and its a whole other topic.

Lastly, probably because it is not our culture and do no know it. Would you rather they teach us what we already know? (or, in fairness, know a tad better).
While there may not be any end in sight to this discussion, I heavily recommend those interested to continue checking this thread out, as it seems to be going places.
And for our last topic of the day, a discussion on Why the War in Afghanistan is Unwinnable.

The real issue lies in Pakistan.

Until early August, Pakistan had yet to really take the fight to the foreign led insurgency spilling over into Afghanistan, but born and bred within its own borders. Pakistan has been fighting in perhaps the most important part of the NWFP since August 6th. They have finally taken the fight to the enemy with strong resolve to see it through. Most importantly, tribes continue to align themselves with the government to help remove the foreigners from their land. That is hugely important. The Taliban and AQ's base of support is drying up, and not just turning their backs, but fighting them alongside the government of Pakistan.

Ive said this time and time again. No amount of troops would have changed the fact that the problem is over the border in Pakistan. You cant seal that border, its impossible. Your talking about numerous areas where insurgents can cross, some as long as the New Mexico border with Mexico. Complete with tunnel systems that have existed for centuries. In mountainous terrain over 5000 meters. You cannot seal that border, nor defend that.

We haven't even really entered the anti insurgency phase in many areas yet. We are simply reactionary based on Taliban forces crossing the border and there movements once inside Afghanistan.

What you have now is groups of Taliban roaming around in groups of 10-60 men. They operate independently of one another, and use intimidation to survive.

Ultimately success means stopping the flow of fighters into Afghanistan, of which Pakistan is the main player. Continuing to build the Afghan Army. Keeping NATO focused and increasing their role. Eventually providing security to a point that building of an infrastructure is possible (from scratch) in major population centers. Continuing to push for political refinement.

    It takes time. Decades.

The general is right though. When you fight these kinds of wars, there is no discernible end. That is all he was saying.

The rest of the article is opinion based journalism. I can tell you that the guys I know still in Afghanistan are far more knowledgeable than the BBC writer in question, and they are far more positive. They are also realistic, they know it simply takes time.
Let’s all hope it works out the way you say, Barnaby!

    Film Review
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Spike Lee. Remember that guy? You know, the one who criticized Clint Eastwood for not putting enough black people in “Flags of Our Fathers”? Eastwood replied that Lee should “Shut his face”? Well, it turns out Spike Lee doesn’t know how to shut up, he knows how to “put up”, and that’s just what he did when he decided to create a World War II movie about Black soldiers.

Now you may be thinking, “Oh great, another Remember the Titans, Coach Carter, *insert corny film about overcoming racism*” That was my initial reaction when I first heard about “Miracle at St. Anna.” I figured I was in for another Malcolm X style “White man evil, Black man virtuous” movie. While, this did have those overtones, it had so much more.

The Plot for this is very simple. A black man has committed Murder in 1980’s. After a quick search of his apartment, several things are discovered. First and foremost is that this man is a World War II veteran who earned a purple heart. More intriguing is the decapitated head of an Italian Statue that is worth millions. A young journalist quickly begins to question the murderer about this head, and in flashback form we are brought back to 1944 Italy. The story revolves around the “Buffalo Soldiers” which was apparently the only segregated Combat Infantry Unit that served during the war. After a fierce firefight, four of the Buffalo Soldiers find themselves deep behind enemy lines, trapped in an Italian village as German Soldiers pollute the countryside all around them.

Where does the head come in? It’s introduced early on, as it was recovered by one of the soldiers in, either Venice or Florence, and is considered to be a good luck charm. This soldier, while behind enemy lines he saves the life of an Italian boy who seems to be talking to an imaginary friend. That is all I will say on that, as any more divulgence of information may very well ruin an interesting side story to the movie.

The movie itself could very well have been made into 2 or 3 unrelated movies and still have been good. However, Lee got a little greedy and tried to combine several good stories into one. Somehow, it worked out! The film is a War film, a crime film, a film on racism, and of course a film on spiritualism.

One of the best aspects of this film is that it’s not one dimensional. It tells several stories from several perspectives. There is the story of the African American soldiers, that of Italian townspeople, of German officers and soldiers, and of an Italian Partisan group. This is exactly what Saving Private Ryan was lacking; a sense of humanity in all parties involved. While at times, you do have a sense of hatred for the Germans, at others you empathize with them and even respect them.

There are only two major combat scenes, sorry war buffs, and I take issue with one of them. The first of the two seems rather cheesy. I never believed that the soldiers were involved in a firefight, not for a second. I don’t know what it was, but it just seemed too unrealistic. The characters also seem a bit fake. Like they were taken right out of stereotypical cartoon about "them negroes". There is a point in the movie, though, when the Characters start to actually become real and are developed to the point where you actually care what happens to them. In line with character progression, the second combat scene was very believable and I felt like I too was dodging bullets and throwing grenades. Lee gets a B from me as far as battle scenes goes, but don’t be fooled, the story is not about battle, but about something deeper.

The film, as you know is entitled “Miracle at St. Anna”. So where’s the miracle? From what I saw, the story is a series of strange coincidences leading people from different nationalities and political ideologies together. Germans, Italians, and Americans. Fascists and Partisans. Soldiers and Civilians. All leading up to a bittersweet ending that may even leave a tear in your eye. Do not see this movie if you just want to see how badly African Americans were treated. They are mistreated by officers and civilians alike, but that is not the point of the movie. The Movie is not a cry for attention for the African American community. It’s a story about Heroism and how it is not exclusively to be found in Blacks or whites, Allies or Axis.
Does that count as news? Aww hell, no ones reading anyway. Roll the next slot! Oh, crap, it's Macky...can we cancel that? What? It's already rolling on air? Crap. Ok, can we edit out my intro...? Oh, forget it, here's the Thema Devia.

This week I think that we should start off by taking a little trip to merry ole' England. But more specifically lets talk about the wonderful world of English accents in this thread.

Now most of you across the pond or across the channel in Euroland may only think there are two English accents. A London cockney (as seen in Mary Poppins) or the posh sounding accent that the Queen and all the steriotypically buck toothed yet charming male Englishmen have.

    What do you guys think?
Now then matey, If I was a one of those nationalists that are turning the mudpit into cancer I would have gone mental at this stage. But Im not so how did the other TWCer's take this statement.....

Ah, yes but over 50% of the people you meet in London aren't English.
Very true, having recently visited the glorious capital of the constitutional monarchy of Great Britannia[/borat voice] I found my self hearing very few English accents or regional English accents.

The closest accent to what english started out as would actually be a modern-day dutch accent.
Bring on the porn and pot I say.

Scots need to learn English thats for sure.
Och aye mi wee laddie, I cannae understand ye

A very neutral accent, we'd call it posh up north, but in reality it's well spoken "proper" Queens English.
Well apparently saying barth, parth, arnswer, arftermarth etc is posh in Yorkshire. Your just jealous for the year round miserable weather you Yorkshiremen yet.

Right then moving on from the myriad of English accents we approach into the realm of Sarah Palin and her attractiveness.

    YAY.
The best kind of death in my opinion, then again how bad will it be when the forensics and police arrive to find you naked wearing some item of contraception? Also I imagine that your loved one will end up traumatised by the experience. Oh well atleast you lost your virginity before you died!

Whilst I felt like my quote of him accurately covered the point he was making that the BNP is not a racist party per se. In looking back at it I can understand how people could take it differently and for that I apologise most sincerely to you Kleos for any offense caused.

Now onto the rest of the article we begin by looking at a rather old thread that has recently been revived.

It seems such a distant thought. Yet, uniting these four countries would be a great asset for all involved. The USA is... on shaky legs, to put it short. A worthy analogy would be a swaying boxer awaiting the last mighty haymaker to send them sprawling to the mat. With a dollar falling lower and lower, a populace rather outraged at the government (I took a short trip to Florida recently, they are pissed off), trillions of dollars in debt, a costly war halfway across the world with no exit strategy, and the malignant tumour that is the Military-Industrial Complex, one could say the United States is in a bit of a pickle.

Now, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain are all linked by alliances and trade to the United States. What are we to do in a world where the US is in the crapper and we're left out in the cold? Most of us are excluded by merit of geography from the EU, and I don't forsee Russia or especially China being very friendly to us four. What are we left to do? Unite. Unite and let the greatest empire the world has ever seen rise again in it's glory. The truly United Kingdom would have a landmass of 18,000,000 square kilometers, and a population in excess of 115,000,000 people, as well as all the industrial, economic and military strength of four developed nations combined.

Obviously, such a union would be a vast political paradigm shift in each country. We all share Her Majesty the Queen as our Head of State, and each of us has a Westminister-style Parliament. It is in the political parties that things will get messy. How will you decide which political parties to let into the new Parliament? Where will this parliament be located? What about the existing parliaments in each nation? Would they be abolished or retained as a sort of National Legislature, like each Canadian province has? If these barriers could be overcome, I believe it would be greatly beneficial

How about militarily. Going by current funds, the combined military expenditures of this theorectical United Kingdom would be over 100,000,000,000 USD. Admittably a sixth of what is spent by the US, and only half of what the EU expends overall, but it puts all of us on a greater footing. In terms of manpower, our regular forces would number 327,000 men in total, give or take. The combined navy would have a force of 190 ships, again give or take. All countries involved would be put on better footing militarily by this union. Economy? Well, let's just combine the GDP for these four countries.

    Great Britain: 2.270 trillion USD
    Canada: 1.165 trillion USD
    Australia: 718.4 billion USD
    New Zealand: 110.296 billion USD

    Yes, that's a lot

Economically, militarily and politically, a union of these four major Commonwealth countries would be enormously beneficial for all involved. We all share similar language, history, culture, religion and a Head of State, greatly easing the process of unification. I believe that it would be the best thing for these Commonwealth nations to form one, single, truly United Kingdom, upon which the sun will never set.

    Thoughts and opinions?
With this there is much disagreement amongst twc members onto what form any such union would form. With some members saying it will be a horrible idea that would lead to a neo-english Empire

Granted, being slaughtered in said wars were probably in their best interests though, I have to admit.
Whilst others are more optimistic then that and believe that it would lead to a great country.

I would envisage a union very similiar to the EU between these states, with very close economic partnerships, intelligence sharing, travel and work permits and much more co-operability between the nations militaries. So close infact that they would be almost indistinguishable with common camouflage, service rifle, vehicles, ships and aircraft. A Commonwealth Army. However this Union of Commonwealth nations would be of equal footing with everyone at the same level playing field and not Britain being the leading player like in the old days of Empire. These countries would not remerge to become part of Great Britain, they would remain independent and retain their same old identities, this would be a organizational union, like the EU.

Obviously there would be great deals of autonomy to all countries with ability to decide their own taxation, social laws, economic direction etc etc

With the combined GDP and populations of the nations, the new Commonwealth would be a viable and powerful economic block, a larger potent military force and cultural powerhouse around the globe influencing the world greatly. (much moreso then being seperated)

This is of course all fantasy but I can dream! This was a good hypothetical situation you created.

EDIT: Seems like I already responded in this thread and forgot about it. Oh well, I still maintain that this scenario is very unlikely but it's still interesting to think about especially when you consider the closeness these countries share historically and culturally, it seems madness to be so separate.
We now move on to Time Commander Bob’s thread on a new way of running the gaol system.

Quote Originally Posted by Time Commander Bob View Post

Now here is the main point of the idea. A prisoner is given the opportunity to do work in a government owned premises (which may be manufacturing, construction, etc). Doing such work would reduce the amount of PP over time. If the prisoner did no such work, there would be no reduction in PP. If the work was of a low standard then the amount of PP would decrease at a lower rate. The idea here is that since the said criminal has wronged society, it is his duty to repay the debt back to society.

As you might have already guessed, when a prisoner's PP reaches 0, he/she is free to go. However, that may take time and therefore smaller incentives must be made to make prisoners work. For example, reducing one's PP below a certain threshold could grant him/her better food, or a better prison cell. However, if prisoners were unruly whilst in prison then PP could obviously be added as a punishment.

Are there any particular flaws to this idea that people can find so I can refine it further?
Some members of the group agree with this statement saying that it is about time that hard labour was reintroduced to the penal system

Welcome to another rousing edition of the helios. It's been fun posting in the forum these past few days and delightful discussions are springing up like fungal growth over night. I am going to attempt to see "Religulous", a documentary calling into question the necessity of religion. Did you know, for example, (and I take this information from a Bill Maher interview ) that 60% of Americans believe that Noah's Ark is a story based in factual truth? A distressing number indeed. I think this would be educational for theists and atheists alike to read.

Anyway, moving along with the rest of the report, Tankbuster's thread, "The problems of nnocent Suffering"

I will only include part of the OP, since it was long, but here are the main points:

Why hasn't anyone thought of this before? When somebody asks a christian why a storm happens, why don't they gave the easy scientific explanation? Think about it.

    "Why do earthquakes happen?"

Because the Earth used to be more hot than now, but now it's still cooling down. Plus, the Earth is divided into tectonic plates. These two phenomenons can cause strong forces and tremblements. We call these earthquakes.

    "Why are there floods?"

Because of earthquakes under the sea...

"Why do some people have hereditary cancers?"

Because of the over-crossing of chromosomes, and failures in the process of the transcription of genes into protein combinations.

It has all been explained a bazillion times! Why do theists torture themselves with this Problem of Innocent Suffering when the answers are this simple?

But I think I understand now.

Theists don't like these scientific interpretations.

If they were to start thinking like this, they would immediately find an answer for earthquakes, floods,...

But it would be like opening Pandora's box. If you start explaining these phenomena in a scientific way, you have to continue all the way. Diseases, cancer, premature deaths, amputees, handicap, you're forced to keep the scientific interpretation. And you keep doing it, until there is no suffering or phenomenon left on Earth to interpret.

And then you wonder, where is God? If all is just a consequence of random events, of plate tectonic, chromosomal failures, where does God come in? If all those so-called 'divine punishments' are plate tectonics and coincidencal failures, then where does God intervene on Earth?

The answer is inevitable: we've already explained it all, there's simple no place left for him. We can still implement him, as a kind of office clerk who monitors these tectonics and failures and makes it happen without thinking of us... but then Ockham's razor starts itching uncontrollably. We don't need that assumption, and we bloody know it!

The most we can pull out of this, is deism. We might have explained all phenomena on Earth, but we can't say anything about the beginning of the universe. So a kind of watchmaker God still fits in, but again the question pops up: we really have no idea over the begin of the universe, so why would we still use the assumption? Ockham's razor doesn't allow it. Everything keeps working without the assumption!

And before you know it, you're an atheist.

I think this is why christians and others are determined not to explain storms, earthquakes and cancers in a scientific way. This is why the POIS doesn't cease to exist. They want to avoid, at all costs, to open Pandora's box, because they know it will drag them in an unstoppable spiral into the deep abyss of atheism. They sense that when they take a peek in the box, they'll end up in deism, or worse, atheism. So they don't open it, simple as that.

Then, of course, we get the Problem of Innocent Suffering, but that's really a small price to pay.

It's not at all necessary to want to see God's plan in a storm, but christians HAVE TO, there's no other way! It's that, the fruitless debate about whether or not God is responsable ... or the box.

The only way to avoid the box of Pandora, is seeing God's divine plan in everything. A storm can't just be two pressure centra. An earthquake can't just be plate tectonics. God has to have something to do with it, otherwise we're back on the way to the not-intervening God.

The Problem of Innocent Suffering started of as a problem, but since the scientific progress solved the problem, the POIS has evolved into the collateral damage of / the price to pay for avoiding the scientific answer.

They don't like it, but it's the best deal they can get: the only other way available, the scientific interpretation, is lethal.

It is my opinion that this post adequetely represents the atheist or agnostic point of view. The response from theists has been to quote sources from Job, which they believe to counter these points of innocent suffering.Countering also includes some interesting tidbits of religious (dare I say) enigma (?)

All in all a discussion that is quacking the very foundations of the Ethos debate.

Moving merrily along to a debate created by the one and only axeman, who so cordially reminds us

Why do so many of them forget one simple fact?

99% of the time , we can attribute a lack of faith to the luxury of a good life...

A basic debate, yes, but what was intriguing was the responses. Broken pope's was most humorous and not far off the mark!

If by 'the luxury' of a good life you mean 'education', I never forget it.

If everybody understood the basic tenets of Darwinism and cosmology there would be fewer people clinging to creation myths as a means of explaining their physical and social environment.

I used to think that religion was a harmless crutch for the stupid, weak-minded and ill-informed. Since September 11th 2001 I have come to think it is a dangerous indulgence to allow these people to hold irrational and baseless beliefs.

Would a majority of the readers agree that animosity as a result of a sense of superiority exists between atheists and theists (namely Christians)? To some extent it can be said that each side considers themselves superior to the other by a tie to God or higher education. This may or may not be the case for every particular scenario, but it must be agreed it does occur.

This prompted a discussion about the reactions of atheists towards theists.

The question was asked, and anwsers varied from user to user, as could be expected.

Yorkshireman informed us of his position:

Im an atheist and British, (not European!), and I 've no problem with Christians practicing their religion. I was raised in a predominantly christian country, it's a part of my society, culture and tradition. I still attend church, both Protestant and Catholic, for weddings, funerals, christenings, communions etc and bow my head and follow most of the customs where required.

The only time I take issue with religion is if it trys to enforce it's doctrine or influence the law of the land/education/politics etc where it is'nt relevant. But that goes for any religion.

So, can there be any common ground between theists and atheists? Potentially yes, but that is up to the individual!

To conclude this fortnights' report, we bring a thread dealing with the prospect of homosexuals serving in the military. (It's just like Queer Concern! )

Technically they are, in the military of the US at least, because of our don't ask don't tell policy, but if they are known to be gay they are not allowed in as a rule.

My question is, should sexual preference bar individulas from serving in their country's armed forces?

I refer to an army of antiquity, the sacred band of Thebes, an elite military force composed entirely of homosexuals lovers. They were remarkably efficient in battle, fighting with particular prowess at the battle of Chaeronea against the Macedonian army with Philip and Alexander. They stood their ground to the last man while the rest of the Thebans fled, earning reputation and regard among Alexander, who respected them.

So, yes, homosexuals are permitted to serve (in the US military at least), and that's just how it should be. No group or individual should be denied an opportunity in the military based on sexual preference, gender, or race.

As a whole, TWC seemed to agree that it is OK for homosexuals to take up arms and defend their nation just as any other would do, but several concerns arose of a different nature.

Well the only problem seems that a lot of people who join the military are also quite homophobic, and would have major psychological issues with accepting homosexuals into their ranks. The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, while a slap in the face to "equal rights" advocates, managed to largely circumvent that aspect of things. Perhaps one way to get the homophobes to realize their fears are irrational would be to let them serve alongside gays and see that there is no problem with it, but if they were unable to adjust or fully trust their brothers in arms they might cause lives to be lost.

And just like that, the EMM report has whisked away like the smoke from sacrificial burnt offerings. Stay tuned for more EMM action and don't forget to drop by! As of late activity has been increasing and I love to claim some credit for it!

For some reason, despite several applicants, the Arts has STILL not been covered. Don't worry, it will definitely return in next week's issue! Now, we go live to Rez, what have you got for us, Rez?
    Vestigia Vetustatis

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Hello and welcome to another rundown of the Vestigia Vetustatis. I was recently perusing another forum and I happened to come across a thread that claimed we were all descended from an advanced alien species that taught the Sumerians how to use all sorts of technology in order to farm gold. My first thought was how lucky we are that we don't have to put up with any of that rubbish in our little corner of the web. Sure people are saying there's too much nationalism in the VV and its being over run with fools. But a little foolishness often opens the door to a vast tonne of knowledge. Make sure you thank your lucky stars that we only put up with a little foolishness and not a lot of distilled idiocy.

First up in this issue's showcase of glory is the surprisingly long debate over Transylvania . This thread spans a whopping 22 pages already and has actually provoked some quite lively arguments over whether the Romanians or hungarians have a better claim to the land. Moreover some interesting points have been made on the origins of various peoples throughout the thread. I really can't give you a quick summation of the arguments since they are so very long. But here's the OP

    Holy crap...what a history

Russians liberated Europe??? LOL! Russians INVADED half Europe and I thiink they weren't much better than nazis. They created puppet states in spite of the fact that they promised for free elections to be kept in the occupied countries.

Soviet Union annexed Kárpátalja and because and of this they gave Czechslovakia 11 200km2 from Hungary that we retrieved lawfully, and they gived North-Transylvania to Romania (reward for they turned to the Soviet Unions side and as amends for annexing bessarabia)wich is lawfully ours too and they give Vojdvina to Yugoslavia(Tito) as reward too. And they created a brain wash education to Hungary to forget about Trianon, our acient lands and history and they let the neighbouring countries to try to asslimilate the Hungarians. But we didn't forget about this! (See 1956 october 23, Budapest)

Russia Invaded Poland (Ribbentropp-Molotov pact), Bessarabia from romania wich belongs to romania rightfully (I admit that) and after the war they kept the invaded eastern Polish lands and Sovien Union annexed Lihuania, Estonia, Latvia and they took land from finland. OH WHAT A SAVIOURS!

Now they want to restore Soviet Union and they attacked Georgia....
Don't be put off by the vehemence of the OP. Get on down and learn something new about Eastern Europe.

Next up is a resurrected thread that I want to mention for a fairly original new take on the question of which was the greatest Classical empire?

After a fresh discussion on measuring the depth of Roman influence by noting how many modern countries use either common or civil law we are given an odd nomniation for the greatest empire. The friend has postulated that the Mauryan empire was equal to if not superior to the Roman empire and any other offered.

This meta-debate is only just beginning so if you want to jump in and have your way with history then now is the time to do it!

First, i should say i live in Scotland, in a small village by a loch.

    1. At this time, Scotland was inhabited by primitive picts, so i would have been little better than a hunter gatherer, foraging berries or hunting dear or boar in the woods, or maybe perforimg religious rites to appease the spirits.

    2. At this time, i would have been a livestock farmer, and would have been fending off attacks from vikings.

3.At this time, i would have been a medieval peasant serving under a feudal scottish knight, and working in a small shack as a blacksmith, praying o god that the various faeries and kelpies around here would leave me alone. I might also have been serving under him in battle, against king edward at stiring bridge.

    What about you?
Have a laugh and tell us what your daily life would have been like!

That's all from me my friends. Back to Dom in the studio.
Thank you, Rezothy, excellent work there. To the Editorialmobile!
EditorialsNow, with Elrond absent this issue, we have but one editorial again, this time the exalted and venerable Black Prince. Princey, gay it up, you know what to do...

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Queer Concern

    Rainbow Politics

That’s right folks, the conference season is over, politics are back on the agenda here in my Queer corner of the Helios (though it’s not as Queer as the editor’s office, he has a very disturbing collection of whips and chains in there. I prefer not to speculate as to what he does with them. The editor may look young and cute, but beware!). I’ve talked before, in more general terms about why so many gay people vote for right wing parties. I’ve clearly stated in the past that the majority of gay people don’t play single issue politics and vote on gay issues alone.

However, its fair to say that gay issues are going to feature somewhere in a lot of gay peoples minds when it comes to picking a party to vote for, and despite this, the majority of British gays will be voting for the conservatives. Why is this?

Recently, Cllr Margot James, a conservative, lesbian, parliamentary candidate and vice-chairman of the conservative party, stated that gay people should vote conservative.

A member of labour youth I know responded on Facebook by asking what had the conservatives ever done for gay people, and comparing that to labours track record.

Yes, the conservatives were the champions of section 28, and yes, the last labour government have a very good track record on gay rights…

But let’s set the record straight here! (Weird for me, I know!)

Firstly, the conservative party of today is not the same as the party of the last tory government. Just as Tony Blair successfully reformed the labour party prior to his 1997 victory, so to has David Cameron reformed our party. Yes, we, like every party, have its bigots and prejudiced members, but at the next election, if we win as predicted, we’re looking at around 120-150 new conservative MPs…

Look at our candidates, they’re youthful, from a completely different generation to most of out current MPs, they grew up in a different era and they’re far more embracing of change. Several of our conservative candidates are openly gay, and there are two gay men in shadow cabinet, with every likelihood of them being in the cabinet after the next election. Many of our key political operatives, including the man who ran Boris Johnson’s race to be London mayor, are openly gay. So are many of our policy makers. Again, these are young upcoming high flying conservatives who share the right week fiscal and economic policies of our parties forbears, but on many social issues, such as gay rights, firmly believe that gay people should be treated equally to everyone else. A party with so many gay people in so many key positions is hardly likely to be able to force an anti gay agenda anywhere.

Even older people in the party are happily accepting of gay people. My local conservative association has its fair share of grey haired pearls of wisdom, and yet I’m an openly gay man who’s an office holder and executive member of the association. My partner is also a member and regularly attends high profile functions with me. Guess what? No one cares!

Secondly, labour’s record is no where near as good as they would have you believe.

There are indeed many pro-gay people in the labour government. Tony Blair, David Blunkett and Alan Johnson have been some of the key people in pushing for various aspects of gay rights, for a variety of reasons.

However, labour has its fair share of demons too. Gordon Brown himself has one of the worst records of voting for gay rights of the entire cabinet, past and present. He is second only to the former Secretary Ruth Kelly, who, lest we forget, was actually put in charge of promoting gay rights, despite being a member of Opus Dei and well known to oppose them. Her personal intervention was responsible for delaying and watering down numerous gay rights initiatives. Thankfully, she has gone from the government.

But what are these achievements. Well, it is true to say that labour equalised the age of consent by reducing it from 18 to 16 for gay people in 1998.

Others of their actions have been less positive. Labour is the first government in our history to actively legislate for gay segregation, having passed a horrible and demeaning civil partnership act that not only ensures that gay people are treated as second class citizens when it comes to marriage law, but will inevitably make it harder to achieve actual gay marriage. One law for gay people, one law for straight people… that’s called segregation and one would have hoped this country was long past such measures.

But less we forget, this is the same government that enshrined in law the right for religious people to actively discriminate against gay people and legitimise their hateful practices and homophobia. This government enshrined in law the fact that a preacher can preach as much homophobic hatred as he wants and merely has to say that it is a precept of his religion to be homophobic for it to be lawful. If the same preacher preached hatred about another religion, he is guilty of inciting religious hatred, but those laws were exempted when it came to homophobia.

So yes, Labour provided protection for gay people from inciting hatred, but its ok to do so if your religious. Well that's helpful, that's really helped us, thanks! By enshrining religions right to discriminate in law, a very grey area that everybody stepped carefully around because they were scared of prosecution has now become crystal clear and made matters worse.

Labour talks joyfully about the employment discrimination measures it has brought it, and will cheerfully tell us that it was labour that allowed gay people to serve in the military….

Well, I suppose labour has to take credit for other people’s work, because they have so little meritorious conduct of their own to be proud of.

But lets remember everyone, equal rights for gay people in employment is European law, and the UK is merely following Brussels order’s on this one. It’s the European Parliament and the European Court of Justice who can be thanked and praised for forcing this through.

And its Stonewall who should take much of the credit for gay people in the military. Its Stonewall who lobbied the government repeatedly on this issue, and it’s the labour government who refused! Stonewall then took the Government to court, and it’s the European Court of Human Rights that ordered the government to allow gay people to serve in the military. For labour to take credit for something they opposed is atrociously disrespectful to the work of Stonewall and their friends in the Service who fought so hard for this.

When it comes to gay rights, Labour have very little to be proud of, and I am happy in the knowledge that the next conservative government will not only kick labour out, but will be an active and positive government towards all aspects of Britain’s community, including the Queer one.

One of our party’s slogans is Vote Blue, Go Green, pointing out our party’s commitment to environmental issues. But I prefer to say, Vote Blue, Go Pink.

    EARLY MORNING UPDATE
Ok, so have just returned from a quick drink (3 hours) in town. Me and my boyfriend were meeting some of his straight friends, and we ere there early so went to the gay bar (Bar 6T9) to have a drink while we waiting. It was a bit early for clubbers so the bar wasn't that busy yet. Anyway, I got to the bar and was waiting my turn when this old woman leans across and just asks me am i Gay? I say yes, and she asks, is that your boyfriend? I say Yes again and she then calls me a bastard for being so attractive and says i'm too good looking to be in a relationship! Then she goes off and talks to Gaz comes back gropes my ass then strokes my face and asks if i'm a model?!?!? WTF? before she leaves the pair of us alone she complains that all the good looking men are gay... well dur, this IS a gay bar... Very random...

    the Black Prince.

As ever, succint, eloquent and beautifully phrased from the Helios veteran. Well, that about wraps it up for this week, so it's goodbye from me, goodbye from the team, and goodbye from the axe murderer right behind you! What? What do you mean they don't kn--

By the way, I experimented by adding in tags to the quotes...
