Well, well, well, you would not believe the first week I've had as Editor! Not only, folks, did I get around to getting all my reporters their respective quill awards for such quality contributions, I'm also putting out an issue only two days late! What's that, Scorch? You never managed even five days late? Awwwww! (By the way, yes, my high horse does eat a hell of a lot of hay )

But on a more serious note, welcome! We're now into the Helios Thirties, and as such, we've got an issue bursting with...well, the stuff it usually has, but I'm pretty sure there's some added flare in there somewhere...I think I saw a multicoloured raccoon rummaging through the office waste paper basket...

I digress, and as such, it is probably best to hand you over to that most delightful of technological wizards, the proconsul of processors and the batterer of RAM himself, Freddie!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

With the aid of a new golden quill, a new hair cut and a holiday to look forward to (god knows I need one after helping you guys sort out your computers for the last year) I’ll be writing this article with even an even greater degree of wit and excitement. Over the last few weeks a couple of you have been posting about their computers under performing and crashing in games, I’ll also be looking at one lucky sod who is buying a HD 4870X2 as well as looking at a thread on media players. In addition to this we have seen a very rare thread in the basement about an Apple Mac going wrong and finishing off with how to buy a laptop.

What’s the use of a new computer when you’re not getting the performance you expect from your new hardware? Both Roman Clone and Wheelchair are having ongoing issues with recently built systems that are causing them a lot of grief.

    My specs:

    MSI 680i
    ECS 8800 GTS 512MB
    WD 500 GB Caviar
    4 GB DDR2 800 MHz
    Intel E8400

It’s sad to read stories like this, people have worked hard to afford these computers yet when they come to enjoy them they cause them a lot of grief. Sadly this is the risk you take when you build your own machines, if you don’t regulate air flow correctly or tidy your cables (a common mistake when building your own PC) away components will get hot and crash. In Roman Clone’s case his card has a habit of setting its memory clock rate to half of what it should be.

In the basement we always try our best to identify what is causing the problem and work out a solution, however sometimes your best bet is to simply return a product if it’s still in warranty

Above is a picture of the HD 4870X2, this the fastest video card on the market today (but also the most power hungry so if you plan to purchase one of these make sure your PSU can power it) so its know wonder why gamers like Dark Legion are pondering if he should get the 4870X2 or not.

I haven’t heard of any problem with the card being able to run games like Oblivion or Crysis (although Crysis still doesn’t scale well on ATI crossfire cards). But as TemplarLord points out,

The HD 4870X2 is a great card but before you commit yourself to buying one you should look at whether your actually going to need one. Most people still play PC games on monitors that range from 17” (1280 x 1024) to widescreen 22” monitors (1680 x 1080) and at those resolutions a 4870X2 isn’t cost effective for new games (Crysis aside). Unless you play on a screen that can deliver 1920 x 1200 or above then the HD 4870 X2 with its 2Gb of GDDR5 memory comes into it’s own. On top of the expense of buying the card you would probably have to look at replacing your PSU as well which could be another £100 on top.

A common area for discussion in the basement that I haven’t reported on much is the area of media players. After reading through this thread it’s clear everyone has their own preference as to how they to listen to their music and watch DVD’s.

If your new to computers or if you have never used your computer for playing media files (music, movies etc) I would suggest you stick to Windows Media player for music and use VLC for playing DVD’s (Power DVD is a programme many of us get free with a retail PC DVD reader, I stopped using this because I found it very unstable and was prone to crashing at the wrong moment).

Once you’re a bit more comfortable with media players I would suggest trying something like Media Portal, combine this with a remote control you can watch just about anything your want from the comfort of your sofa (if your using it as a HTPC).

It’s not often we get threads about problems regarding Mac’s, so it was quite a surprise to see Romanos IV posting about a problem with his keyboard.

A quick look on google revels there has been a problem with Macbooks and keyboards and Apple released an update to fix some of the issues last December. However Romanos already has the latest drivers and the problem still persists. This is very sloppy from Apple and very unusually as they are normally quick to respond to problems whether it’s hardware or software. Despite this, Norge had the best solution,

Well first good luck to Shaun at University I hope all goes well for you. And for all of all of you who have been posting in the basement asking about laptops please read the last paragraph of Shaun’s post – ‘it doesn't need to be able play any new games or anything’ , I’m glad someone has been listing to me.

Since Shaun will be using his laptop for, office apps, Firefox, media players, BBC iplayer etc he could pick a decent laptop for just under £400, which would include a Intel Centrino dual core CPU, 2Gb of ram and a 160 HD and a 15” screen or he could get a laptop with a 17” screen (ideal for watch DVD’s and iplayer) with a slower Celeron CPU for less money.

That’s all from me for this edition, I hope you enjoyed reading it and found it useful.

Barely above par as usual Freddie, thankyou, thankyou. Now, a new arrival! (Who's article I missed out due to it being a PM and not in the preparation thread, so sorry! It's my first day!) Elzabar has done a top-drawer job of the Coliseum, so we've chained him up in the office and got out the fuzzy handcuffs, so he's here for good!

On July the 12th, Broken Pope made the thread Your Best Jokes (Rep may be awarded…). This thread is still running, and there are some remarkably good laughs to be had there. One of the leaders in the joke industry is VLAD FELIX, who has made many a man (and woman, it would seem) laugh out loud. Of the many jokes that VLAD graced us with, this one stood out (perhaps because of the nerdiness inside of me):

    ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.

    ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.

    ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

    ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

    ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What have you got?

    ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

    ABBOTT: I just did.

    COSTELLO: You just did what?

    ABBOTT: Recommend something.

    COSTELLO: You recommended something?

    ABBOTT: Yes.

    COSTELLO: For my office?

    ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office and it has windows OK, lets just say, I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a my proposal. What
    do I need?

    ABBOTT: Word.

    COSTELLO: What word?

    ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue "W" if you don't start with some straight answers. OK, forget that. Can I watch movies on the Internet?

ABBOTT: Yes, you want Real One.

COSTELLO: Maybe a real one, maybe a cartoon. What I watch is none of your business. Just tell me what I need!

    ABBOTT: Real One.

COSTELLO: If its a long movie I also want to see reel 2. 3 & 4. Can I watch them?

    ABBOTT: Of course.

    COSTELLO: Great, with what?

    ABBOTT: Real One.

COSTELLO; OK, I'm at my computer and I want to watch a movie. What do I do?

ABBOTT: You click the blue "1."

COSTELLO: I click the blue one what?

    ABBOTT: The blue "1."
    !
COSTELLO: Is that different from the blue "W"?

ABBOTT: The blue "1" is Real One and the blue "W" is Word.

    COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: But there's three words in "office for windows!"

ABBOTT: No, just one. But it's the most popular Word in the world.

    COSTELLO: It is?

ABBOTT: Yes, but to be fair, there aren't many other Words left. It pretty much wiped out all the other Words out there.

COSTELLO: And that word is real one?

ABBOTT: Real One has nothing to do with Word. Real One isn't even part of Office.

COSTELLO: Stop! Don't start that again. What about financial bookkeeping, you have anything I can track my money with?

    ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?

    ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What's bundled to my computer?

    ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

    ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

    ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off??

    ABBOTT: Click on "START".........

If you ever find yourself in need of a good laugh, head over to the “Your Best Jokes (Rep may be awarded…)” thread, you won’t be disappointed.

What’s next in the Coliseum, you ask? Well, I’ll tell you. Broken Pope has also attempted to hold a game of Consequences!. Which turned out to be a complete and utter failure in the first attempt. But soon, we cleaned up our act, and managed to pump out a few goodies. And a few… Others. One of which suggested that me and Hilary Clinton had some kind of relationship. For my own dignity, I’ll not put that one up…

That isn’t all that’s been happening in the Coliseum, mind you. Wild Bill Kelso’s Fields of War is up and running again. Satan has also been evaluating the price of people’s souls. I myself am auctioning my soul off next week, for a minimum of 472,550 Soul Dollars.

I’ll now head over to the Alliances Gateway, one of the main attractions of the Coliseum. World Alliances hasn’t seen much action, after the game tragically collapsed, most likely never to return. There have been several attempts at reviving the game, as well as Kiljan Arslan’s try at bringing back Colonial Alliances. However, head over to Stellar Alliances, and there is a wealth of activity. Well, that might be an exaggeration, but the fact remains, that it sees the most activity in the Coliseum. There has been much role-playing Stellar Alliances, including the introduction of a Secret Society by General Erwin Rommel, a failed expedition into alien territory, and several socialist and separatist revolutions in the galaxy. Silo also organizes the weekly protests against the dictatorship we live under in Stellar Alliances.

PowerWizard has also continued the entrepreneurial works of Shyam Popat, with the Caption Competition. A picture (sometimes funny, sometimes not) is posted, and users must use their wit to come up with a funny caption to go with the picture. In this competition, Freddie won, with caption number nine:

Let’s get right off the bat with a hot topic, everyone’s current favorite political gal, Sarah Palin, and why she is unqualified to be the VP of America!
Oswald von Wolkenstein started the thread off with a strong opening statement, listing various reasons and causes as to why he believed Alaskan governor Sarah Palin was unfit to be the Vice President of the United States:

All of the Scandals surrounding Palin:

She used her position to destroy lives to get back at her ex-brother-in-law Wooten,

    She's a successionist,

she believes the presidential office is a religiously ordained position,

she's opposed to sex education and condoms and her 17 year old daughter got knocked up,

she served on a city council of city that would, in terms of population, hardly count as nieghborhood in many cities for 4 years (and she wasn't the head of it for more than 2),

They say she studied "political science" but she only took two poli-sci classes and had major in journalism from the University of Idaho. ** (see below for her education -- she switched colleges 6 times just getting the B.A. -- she's going up against people with graduate degrees from the best universities in the world)

She's publicly mocked a political opponent with cancer,

    She's initiating a shotgun wedding

she wants mythology taught as science in our schools

she's got no more executive experience than a highschool principle with 7,000 students, who then became an administrator in a district with 600,000 -- (there is hardly anyone in either houses of Congress, and no other governor in the U.S. with less experience than Sarah Palin.)

She didn't even know what the Vice President does

All of that -- can be just summed up:

No matter how you put it, Sarah Palin is woefully incompetent to be Vice President or President.

    and

McCain does not have the decision making capabilities to be president, he chose a liability as his running mate -- he broke his promise to choose a running mate who would be ready to be president. In his first choice as possible president, he chose someone obviously inadequate.

*8Fall 1982 - University of Hawaii at Hilo, left after a few weeks because of the weather

Fall 1982 - Hawaii Pacific University, majoring in Business Administration

Spring and Fall 1983 - North Idaho College, two year college, majored in "general studies".

Fall 1984 and Spring 1985 - University of Idaho

    Fall 1985 - Matanuska-Susitna College in Alaska

Spring 1986, Fall 1986, and Spring 1987 - Back to the University of Idaho to finish her degree.

No transcripts of any of her grades have been released to the public from any of these colleges. Although a journalism major with a focus in broadcasting, there is no record of Palin ever having worked on any college newspaper or radio station.
Others, however, were quick to denounce Oswald’s opening statement:

All of the candidates are qualified to do theor respective jobs if elected. The real issue is what they will do in their positions if elected. Put this debate where it should be.

A good example of what should be discussed would be how each candidate will approach campaign contributions and regulation. They are tied together. Seems that some will disqualify Sen. But that simply does not include pouring billions of dollars of tax payer money into a company that obviously is too thick with corruption and cronies to remain viable. I never thought the gov should have bailed out any of the mortgage firms, but the more I learn about Freddie and Fannie, the more I realize that was probably legit. But the whole loan industry needs to take serious hit and suffer a bit in order to learn a lesson. The more painful the better, and this is true for those taking loans they can't afford, the better it is for everyone in the long run.

And someone mentioned developing our own natural resources. Although, yes, it would take a little strain off our national debt the key word is 'little'. Right now the war is costing us 10b in debt a month and local oil would only cover about 7% of our use in the best estimates. What the US needs is a new industrial model and new industry. We need to create stuff the world wants to buy instead of credit.

So, needless to say, it also angers me when I hear about the gov giving money to support the auto industry. As someone else said above. If you have a bad business model then you should fail. If the auto industry can not see the writing on the wall, then they should fail and be replaced by those who can.

    Hmm.

I used to think that Sean Combs was an educated and clear thinking man. Now he has proven that he has the political knowledge of an 8 year old. Some celebs need to understand that when it comes to politics they don't no .

    Alaska Mother er!!!!
People were quick to express their condemnation. So guys, what do you think of Combs’s viewpoint?

Combs is also a racist against blacks -- he said "there's no crackheads, no crime, no black people [in Alaska]" (2:04 in the video)-- I mean can you imagine if someone else said that!!!????? So blacks are crackheads and criminals, Mr Combs? --

There are 27,141 black people in Alaska according to the last census. The population of Alaska is 670,053 -- about 4% of Alaska is black but non Hispanic blacks in the U.S. are at about 15% total. So Alaska is 11% under the average. But the percentages blow "Diddy"'s argument -- if Palin is unqualified because her State doesn't reflect America on race -- then Obama's out too -- his 15% isn't very strong. -- Palin is unqualified and by choosing her McCain did insult America -- but this stupid stupid man, has it all wrong. Sean Combs makes Sarah Palin look like George Washington. Horrible.

    The Athenaeum
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Welcome to this Helios edition's Athenaeum report, also referred to as THE MIND**** 3000. This new title is because of the fact that the stuff you read in here will blow your mind. I'm not even kidding, this week actually has some threads that make you question everything you ever learned about life and the universe and sorts of other deep stuff. The best part about the whole thing is that you're sober, so this stuff doesn't go away once the weed's gone! Read on about weird space oddities (not of the Bowie sort), exciting new discoveries and inventions... and of course the usual BS psuedo-science that infests the poor forum. Carry on, intrepid explorer! To the planet Knowledge!

On a related note, this reporter has been informed that he lacks journalistic credibility, and the content of this issue hopes to address those concerns.

Let's start with the space stuff. NASA is looking to the skies, specifically the moon, with their new proposed project: NASA mulls nuclear Moon reactor. Basically, NASA is looking at the benefits and drawbacks (and methods!) to set up a nuclear reactor on the moon. Have a read.

I will highlight the mind**** of all mind****s, a thread of my own making, thanks to the eye of wilpuri. Scientists have discovered some crazy things out in space before, but this takes the cake. "Patches of matter in the universe seem to be moving at very high speeds and in a uniform direction that can't be explained by any of the known gravitational forces in the observable universe. Astronomers are calling the phenomenon "dark flow." If your mind hasn't been blown already, read the article for further mind-blowing.

We have an old thread being bumped next, but the new posts are certainly worth the slight necromancy. It's a great big thread about the border of the universe and what that means, and if it exists. Playfishpaste (someone patronize this guy, stat) writes:
Quote Originally Posted by Playfishpaste View Post

You have to understand that the field of space-time is not the same thing as say, electromagnetic fields or matter waves. Space-time doesn't have a limit, it's what always is. Think of it like the christian interpretation of god: "omnipresent, unlimited and eternal".
Yeah, the quote is out of context, but that should get you interested enough to look at the thread.

Moving on from spacey things, Caradog now asks us what exactly is it that separates humans from the other animals?

Here's what some forumites had to say:

I could include abstract thought, but that's really a prerequisite for real language, so I won't count it separately.

    Animals do not create cities.
    Now put in your say!

Our next highlighted thread is also from Caradog, who apparently likes to think about human behavior. More power to him for making the Athenaeum interesting! He asks us this time about the human trait of warmaking: will we ever lose this 'habit?'

    There's some debate already:

Only when we concentrate on other things, like helping each other, and concentrating on what unites us rather than divides us, only then can we minimize our warmaking.

    AUUUGH HELP AHHH

That was close. Let's just go straight to the pseudo-science and religious topics. Too many monsters.

It's East vs West (or is it? BUM BUM BUM) in Chukada1's thread: CTM kicks Western Medicine's butt.
Quote Originally Posted by Chukada1 View Post

I find that in my amature observations, I noticed that Western Medicine seems to focus mostly on the symptoms, rather then preventing the cause. For example. Acne. That devil we all hate. Whenever I turn on the tube, I always see these commericals, blabbing about how thier product digs deep into the pores and erradicates the dirt which causes pimples.

This is wierd. Because dirt doesn't cause ance. Nor does it cause pimples, but we all know dermatologists are idiots, so we'll ignore that incorrect assumption from the 80's.

The point is that Western medicine will try and cleanse the skin, and stop pimples. Which is a symptom of acne. [pimples] Acne is actually caused by free radicals in the system, stress, poor immune system, mind power, and lack of exercise + fresh air. What happens is that the amount of toxins in your body, exceed your bodies capacity to eradicate those toxins. Then you end up with Acne.

I find that Chinese traditional medicine is all about stopping the cause, and cleansing the body. The philosophy is that, a healthy balanced body, will maintain harmony. When we get sick, we're inbalanced. The solution is then to regain that balance, in this case, becomming healthy again.

This can either be done through stress relieving Acupuncture, proper breathing techiniques (which have proven to eradicate free radicals in the system - they hate clean oxygen), or dietry changes, like drinking green tea (a powerful anti-oxident), eating ginger (a powerful anti-flammatory), or consuming goji berry (a super-duper powerful anti-oxident).

The Western approach never ever ever ever stops acne. But the balancing of the body seems to be a sure bet. This is just once example. Western medicine has done good in the past, for example Polio. But in the modern era, where most diseases have been eradicated. Chinese traditional medicine might be the best course.

The big guy today is cancer. Western medicine is flawed in it's fight against this beast. For one thing. We believe the sun causes cancer. This is false. Sunlight provideds the body with a 90% ressistance to skin cancer. The problem lies when you get sunburned, because it destroys your skin, and that can cause the cancer cells to activate. Heck, have you read what's in sunscreen? I would trust the sun more then I trust this crap I'm letting seap through my skin.

A good way to prevent cancer is to maintain proper health. In essence, to balance your body. Only through perfect balance can we achieve good health, and only through good health, can we prevent disease.

If its the first answer then we could "cure" "gayness" and if its the second then we could theroetically 100% prevent "gayness". You could argue that its a result of their upbringing/life events, but if that was the case we could still prevent it. And now we move away from the what grinds our gears to a thread about what our rides are. For the slow people amongs you we mean cars of course. This is also coincidentally a thread started by Farnan.

But atleast Farnan appears to be a modest man with a modest car.
For me its a 1996 Monte Carlo, with about 160,000 miles. Yea, but I got it dirt cheap and it gets me to work and back.
    Chi'ites own pickup trucks
    1996 Toyota truck.
I work on that baby all the time, as in repairs and maintenance to keep it in tip top running shape. I don't believe in pimping out cars, unless it's a sports car.
I do agee with the sports car bit though. Pimped up crappy hatchbacks are not cool.

Here that guys French cars suck. They honestly do because I had a French car that took the word suck to a whole new level.
Guys, don't buy French cars...any other car will do
Now then how many of you live in the UK? And how many of you learnt to drive with BSM? Well here is an example of the immasculine thing that I must learn in.

Ok then after dabbing in the TWCer's rides I think it is now time to take a peek at a thread exploring the notion of why Americans can become so defensive when it comes to joking about their own country. It can be found here.

Here that Americans 50% of you are overcompensating for you lack of history by killing brown people (Well thats Miraj's opinion)
Americans are perhaps the most hyper-nationalistic people to ever grace this planet. They also have a very short history. Europeans and many other peoples have millenia old cultures & civilizations so Americans may feel a bit insecure and overcompensate with excessive nationalism and by killing brown people. :original:

Of course this is only true for about 50% of America.
A must see episode of Top Gear! Watch it on youtube now! It is pure hilarity.
Anybody see that episode of Top Gear where Clarkson May and Hammond tried to drive through Alabama with contentious political and cultural statements daubed over their cars in fluorescent paint?
    Nascar does suck...
Here that kids even Pontifex thinks Nascar sucks

It looks like the people of the USA are now under British rule once again
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
To the citizens of the United States of America...

In the light of your failure to elect a proper President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. (Except Utah, which she does not fancy.) Your new prime minister (The Right Honourable Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

    1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium". Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and 'neighbour', skipping the letter 'U' is nothing more than laziness on your part. Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters. You will end your love affair with the letter 'Z' (pronounced 'zed' not 'zee'). You will learn that the suffix 'burgh is pronounced 'burra' e.g. Edinburgh. You are welcome to respell Pittsburgh as 'Pittsberg' if you can't cope with correct pronunciation. Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same twenty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up "interspersed". There will be no more 'bleeps' in the Jerry Springer show. If you're not old enough to cope with bad language then you shouldn't have chat shows. When you learn to develop your vocabulary then you won't have to use bad language as often.

    2. There is no such thing as "US English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u'.

    3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard. English accents are not limited to Cockney, upper-class twit or Mancunian (Daphne in Frasier). You will also have to learn how to understand regional accents - Scottish dramas such as "Taggart" will no longer be broadcast with subtitles. While we're talking about regions, you must learn that there is no such place as Devonshire in England. The name of the county is "Devon". If you persist in calling it Devonshire, all American States will become "shires" e.g. Texasshire, Floridashire, Louisianashire.

    4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. Hollywood will be required to cast English actors to play English characters. British sit-coms such as "Men Behaving Badly" or "Red Dwarf" will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy American audience who can't cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness.

    5. You should relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen", but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through.

    6. You should stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US rugby sevens side by 2005. You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the 'World Series' for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls' game called "rounders" which is baseball without fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs.

    7. You should declare war on Quebec and France, using nuclear weapons if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you who were not aware that there is a world outside your borders should count yourselves lucky. The Russians have never been the bad guys. "Merde" is French for "". You will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in public than a vegetable peeler. Because we don't believe you are sensible enough to handle potentially dangerous items, you will require a permit if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

    8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 2nd will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be called "Indecisive Day".

    9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean. All road intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. You will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

    10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips. Fries aren't even French, they are Belgian though 97.85% of you (including the guy who discovered fries while in Europe) are not aware of a country called Belgium. Those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called "crisps". Real chips are thick cut and fried in animal fat. The traditional accompaniment to chips is beer which should be served warm and flat. Waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.

    11. As a sign of penance 5 grams of sea salt per cup will be added to all tea made within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, this quantity to be doubled for tea made within the city of Boston itself.

    12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all, it is lager. From November 1st only proper British Bitter will be referred to as "beer", and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as "Lager".

The substances formerly known as "American Beer" will henceforth be referred to as "Near-Frozen Gnats' Urine", with the exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as "Weak Near-Frozen Gnats' Urine". This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in Pilsen, Czech Republic) to be sold without risk of confusion.

    13. From December 1st the UK will harmonise petrol (or "Gasoline" as you will be permitted to keep calling it until April 1st 2005) prices with the former USA. The UK will harmonise its prices to those of the former USA and the Former USA will, in return, adopt UK petrol prices roughly $6/US gallon - get used to it).

    14. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.

    15. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy.

Tax collectors from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due (backdated to 1776).

On that note I think that ends that thread for now atleast.

This is Macky/ The Big Mac reporting for the Helios and thanks for reading folkes!

With Hollywood in a current stagnation (at least for two weeks), Andre Massena, aka The Film Dood, has taken a break this week and therefore returns next issue. We subsequently move onto Captain Blackadder's Political Academy, which just oozes promise of things I can't be bothered to read. READ IT FOR ME, SLAVES!
    The Political Academy
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Hello this is Captain Blackadder reporting live from the Political Academy where many debates have been springing up as of late, I know it is a strange concept to think of intellectual debate in an internet forum, sacrilege. There has been discussion of many different topics.

We begin our little tour with a look at a certain British political party the B.N.P where two threads have arrived with two comically opposite titles first of we have Ceaser Augustus thread What’s so bad about the BNP? And then we have Caradog’s [u]]The BNP!? you have to be kidding.

Now personally I am perplexed by the existence of the BNP in Britain. I don’t think of Britain as been a practically racist place where as my own country which has a bit of a reputation for it had only one racist party and they thankfully are no longer even a remote force in politics. But, anyway enough of my rambling and onwards with the thread.
Caradog wades in with disgust at the number of people who are saying they would vote for the BNP in the next general election

Quote Originally Posted by Caradog View Post

But anyway, the BNP are a terrible party. I can't believe anyone on this forum would vote for them. Anyone that woul either is a Racist, or does not understand their policies or are plain stupid on saying its a 'Protest' vote'.

The BNP is a Nazi party! They use thugs and put pigs heads in front of Synagogues and use Swastika's on their grafitty.

Their policies are Racist. They are racist. Look at their news website for an example - see how nearly all their articles are racist. It makes me sick that in this day and age with have parties like this.

And half the stuff they say is totall crap. Like Native Britons going to be less by 2000 and something.

    1. Native Britons?
You lot probablly have played TW Games. Come on. The Celts originated from Gaul. The Romans came from Itally and all over their Empire. The Saxons came in from Germany. The Vikings came from Sweeden, Norway and Denmark. The Normans came from Normandy. There is no such thing as a 'Native' Briton! The only way you can even slightly claim to the title is if you are red-haired and blue eyed, and even then chances are you are not 'native' British.

    2. I don't give a crap!

Why should we? Does it matter if our country is diverse and diffrent? I don't mind who my neighbours are, as long as they are good people. We are all humans.

It is sad and upsetting that in this day and age in a rich country there are still many Nazi fools.
With this Kleos comes storming in with some comments that seem to perplex everyone else in the thread. To the statements

The BNP is a racist party
They use thugs and put pig heads in front of synagogues and use swastikas in graffiti
    Their polices are racist
    They are racist

For anybody to argue otherwise is frankly a staggering snub to the facts. The BNP is avowedly racist, aiming at "stemming and reversing the tide of non-white immigration and to restoring, by legal changes, negotiation and consent the overwhelmingly white makeup of the British population that existed in Britain prior to 1948". A fanciful and biggoted policy that could achieve nothing but damage our state. May I also point out that the United Kingdom's population is overwhelmingly white at 91%, and what the BNP stands for is nothing else but the veiled ethnic cleansing of the British Isles. Anybody who supports them should be ashamed of themselves.

It would be BNP policy to legislate against me and people like me because of my mixed race relationship.
We now move onto a thread about the form of government that you would change your country to if you could.

Constitual monarchy(monarchist)-more power to the monarchy but parliament still resticts their powers JUST
Constitual monarchy(parliament)-parliament has a iron grip on the monarchy, a puppet figure
Constitual monarchy(non-biased)- monarchy has a fair amont of power parliament still restricts power though, like Britain

Communist(Fair)-a more fairer Communist government than other ones e.g China, USSR

    Palin vs Clinton

Assume McCain wins the 2008. He's an old guy and not likely to seriously seek a 2nd term. As his VP, Palin is the presumptive Republican nomination. If McCain loses, he's still managed to push Palin centre field and she'd be in a very strong position to seek the nomination in 4 years time.

On the democratic side, Obama will hopefully lose. If he does win, he'll almost certainly go for a second term, but I'm certain he'll lose. If he loses, i'm certain he'll try for the nomination again, but surely democrats aren't stupid enough to make the same mistake twice. Surely he'd be better off going back to the Senate or running for governor and getting some, you know, actual experience before trying again. Biden has all the charisma of a wet fish. If Obama loses, he'll be saddled with Obama's defeat against a potential Hilary campaign that people are already talking about. With Obama out of the picture, who else could challenge Clinton? Polawski maybe? It really needs to be someone incredibly special or with a great deal of national name recognition to challenge Clinton. Obama had the special part, whatever else he is, he's a gifted speaker. Is there anyone else? I guess time will tell.

Freakily, when I logged onto the Telegraph this morning a former senior advisor to Bill Clinton (Dick Morris) had written an article saying much the same thing

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Pontifex here, bringing you the action from the EMM forum. In the course of the past couple weeks, some truly captivating threads have sprung up and real debate has occurred. Inevitably, many of these threads simply progress, and, inevitably, become a classic argument about the existence of God.

I wanted to take a moment and remind everyone that there is a sticky for that. If the debate leans that way, take it to the existence of God thread.

Moving headlong into our first topic, Yorkshireman brings us a report regarding the church of England apologizing to Darwin for dismissing Darwin’s ideas and theories.

My initial thoughts? Why the hell are the British apologizing to a corpse? Instead of apologizing, why not just admit that Darwin could have been correct? Perhaps this is just a way for the British officials to inadvertently denounce creationism? An interesting concept to think of, and an issue for hot debate!

Artorius Maximus, a EMM regular renown for his intelligent, crusader-like devotion to his faith expressed his views:

I'm not sure on this particular church's position on the evolution theory/related theories, but for the purpose of this post, I'm going to make the assumption that most Anglicans don't believe it completely (most likely not 100%, is all I'm saying). I'm also guessing that the motivation behind the apology was to attract advocates of evolution.

I believe that some of the development patterns represented in evolution could even be found in the first few verses of Genesis in the Bible, just need to carefully analyze it to notice the similarities. But I don't completely believe it either, not in the way modern scientists do, anyway. When I study evolution and it's related theories, I try to look at it in a religious perspective, mostly to see how much of it could be compatible with Christianity/Judaism.
Whether or not allusions in the bible to evolution exist or not, the fact remains that evolution is a hard concept for many people of faith to come to terms with. The process of the faithful to make sense of it and incorporate these scientific findings into their faith is an important part of the evolution (as it were) of religion itself.

Whether by divine inspiration or predestination,
My attention was absorbed in Voltaire’s most recent contribution to debate. The argument centers around atheism and theism, of course, but how it relates to historically tyrannical figures such as Hitler and Stalin.

In this beautifully constructed argument refuting the argument that these evil men were godless, Voltaire points out that other ideologies and beliefs were the causes of genocide and mass murders that occurred under these leaders.

I am tired to hear Theists, generally Christians, repeating their old vitriol that the Holocaust and the tons of crimes committed by modern authoritarian regimes, mostly Communist ones, were made in the name of "Atheism".

The difference between the Genocide committed by theists and atheists is the main essence of the business that unfortunately most don't get. St. Bartholemy's Night in XVI century France was made in the name of Catholicism. The Khmer Rouge Massacre was made in the name of Communism, not "Atheism".

Any man can be an Atheist and commit murder in the name of the Catholic Church or some nutty religious denomination. In this particular case, the blame will still go for the Theists because the atheist fellow was merely a tool of their intent and purpose. Similarly, the fact that Communism is an atheistic ideology does not mean that crimes committed under its banner were made primarily for "Atheism". "Atheism", being essentially the lack of belief and without any dogma or militant teaching apart from the principle of the non-existence of divine, ethereal or metaphysical beings, is nothing but a negative, a denial. Killing for "Atheism" would be the same as murdering for the "non-existence of dwarfs".

The primary intent beyond Stalinist and other Communist crimes was the paranoid attitude that lead to a ruthless break on all dissent, mainly from political sources. Religion was also affected because it was thought to go against Communist principle, not "Atheism". Beware because Communist views on the Universe, despite being influenced by Materialistic and Atheistic views, are not necessarily equal to "Atheism", which can often be too diverse to fall into a single, concrete definition other than the very basic denial of God and Gods. Many "atheists" can have different views from other "atheists" depending on personal choice and belief.
This might just be one of the best posts in TWC history.

And, just for the sake of my curiosity, Vote in this poll. I’m interested to see if the majority of TWC users are atheists still!

Pull up a cushion and pass the peace pipe, it’s tine for Quetzalcoatl’s thread of the month!

This one is a bit stale, but still inspirational and worth a read!

    Is the universe infinite?

    the infiniverse

    · i often ponder how there can only be a ‘bubble’ of existence we call reality or the universe. consider that infinity must be all things and in being all things it has to arrive at things one by one, this we refer to as time and progress, and it must have already ‘found’ all things too. that is, if we extend the notion of ‘all-time’ to its infinite version, then all occurrences of all possible things must already be present.

    · we could say that the universe contains all events, this though is not possible on an infinite scale. all events would equate as ‘everything that can be is’. the sphere of all-events would also necessarily contain infinite differentiation and within that infinite sets. our universe then may simply be one of infinite sets of events or infinite universes.

    · now let us include a logical rule; all possible things belong to their set and no other.

    · the other sets as compared to the set of our universe would have to be non finite/quantum. given then that upon this model there must be other sets ~ enough to fill infinity, i wonder at what other possible universes there may be, and if there is an infinite version of this universe in some way. what is the whole of reality as viewed on this scale...

    · i will jump straight to the idea that there is one finite set of infinite sets [the universe], and one infinity of sets. any others would be drawn into one or the other sets [if there were any]. so we have three basic natures of reality, the quantum sets [the universe], the infinity of sets and infinity proper [statelessness].

we must now see what form and nature the infinity of sets has...

    · if you threw a dice in infinity what number would come up? the answer must be that all 6 numbers would show, because all relative operations would occur in no time. we can use this metaphor to understand how all things exist at once in the infiniverse. as with the dice all possible events are ‘there’ as if like the dice in their shaker.

    · this begs the question; must all possible dice and rolls of the dice be in the shaker, the sum of which is the universe. how then can there be another universe to follow [as with cyclic universe theories] after this one?

    · equally so, we must ask what happens when time’s arrow hits the ground - so to say? i.e. when the universe ends. the contents of the shaker must remain as it is not part of time until rolled. thereafter we have a situation where all the ingredients exist yet have no means of finite expression, the only other means available to them is infinite expression!

    · so lets put the two fields together and what do we have; there are both finite and infinite expressions of every possible thing. one expression mirrors its counterpart of differing dimension mapping each other reflectively.

    Q. is it possible then that eternity exists and is equally as real as our universe? as i see it this would not initially be like some version of heaven, as due to infinite cardinality it would be empty or without ‘objects’ as such. it could be though that ‘you’ are mirrored as an infinite set of all that you are.

to this we may add that our universe would seam ‘empty’ in a manner, if we could not see it. the graphics card in our brains produce what we ‘see’ upon information from the senses. it is possible for blind people to see a little bit via hearing, it would appear that the brain just needs info to produce an image and hence see. if our source of info was only from infinity we could produce a vision of the infinite universe and hence ‘see’ eternity. curiously the ancient egyptian had a ceremony in the book of the dead called the opening of the eye’s, perhaps this reflects the act of seeing eternity!
    *Takes a long, thoughtful drag*

Personally, my ability to comprehend infinity is terribly lacking, but is it possible that all happenings in our lifetime are mere flickering in the never ending sphere of life? Even if eternity exists, we have no way of proving it or measuring it, correct? Wouldn’t it be hard to prove something that cannot be comprehended or measured? In a purely scientific sense, yes, but the margins for speculation is wide open for musings. I just brought myself to fully attempt to comprehend the original post, despite this thread making landfall in a previous article of mine.

This kind of stuff makes one think, push the limits of their mental capacity. Excuse me, for a moment, I have to take an advil.

How about a world with no God, ethics, morals, law or order? In a shameless, mutual :wub:esque style, I will now advertise the thread of one of my fellow writers, which has surprisingly lead the way in EMM discussion, for the finale of this report (pun intended).

Okay, let us first assume there is No God at all. We are living in a universe created completely naturally and there is no God or higher being.

Based on that assumption, we can also assume that morality is 100% relative to each and every single person. We can also throw in Ethics there. Which, admittedly is more broad than simply "right and wrong" but for arguments sake, let us limit it to that.

So, here we are. Who decides what is right and wrong? Who decides what morality is the best morality to base law upon?

If we are still assuming that morality and ethics is 100% relative, we must then assume that there is no "correct" morality or ethical code.

Following that assumption, we must come to the conclusion that without a superior being, be it God or multiple diety's, there is no Right and there is no Wrong. There is no concept of justice. There is no "good" or "evil".
    There [are] only opinions.

Alas, our law system, and very civilization is founded upon principles of justic, law, right. So why are we expected to follow "the rules" or agree to obey the laws set down by mere men? If they have no moral implications why must we obey? Is it fear? Are we merely being 'good' (again, in this scenario there is no good) because we do not want to be punished for....doing nothing wrong? Do we follow the rules then, because we live in a tyranny, and to not is to risk harm unto ourselves?

Hobbes brought the idea of the Social Contract. He said that in a world without order, life was "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short" Therefore we must surrender our freedom to do what we wanted all the time to Strong Central authority in order to avoid this. Sounds good eh? Is it really? Which is better? Freedom or Safety? Do we really have either? And furthermore, is it "wrong" that life be that way? Unpleasant, for sure. But in a world of no absolute morality, who's to say that "the Strong do what they will, the weak suffer what they must" is wrong? You cannot argue that from a moral or ethical perspective.

Also, if it is true that we must surrender our freedom to live as we choose in order to sucure secuirity for ourselves, then is this "social" contract applicable to those born after the foundations of our society? I never agreed to surrender my right to murder, or my right to steal, or rape, or attack other people. I don't do these things, due to my moral views, but I never told my Government "protect me, and I won't break your laws." Nor did any of us who weren't around to vote our own countries into existance.
John Locke was also a beleiver in the social contract, yet he beleived that human nature was less brutal and that in the natural state, all humans were equal and independent, but that we still needed to surrender ultimate freedom to form society. My question also applies to Locke's theory.

So, in conclusion...in a world without God, are laws really meaningless? Do our lack of absolute morals and universal ethics, as well as our lack of agreement to surrender rights to our Governments and societies mean that in the end, without God, we are living in slavery, we just don't realize it?
I would like to say that assuming there is no God, that does not automatically lead to the non-existence of morals. Indeed, just assuming that God doesn’t exist doesn’t mean that people will not worship and believe in him anyway ().

Getting back on topic, while it is easy to ponder these things, we would have no way of knowing whether or not anyone’s arguments are true. But based on thinkers like Plato and Socrates, who stressed an absolutist style of thinking, it can be assumed that morals would exist, but without the commonly heard expression of “Christian” morals.

It is my opinion morals can be secular, as they are not limited to a religion. Morals and ethics are universal. Each individual is endowed (unless afflicted with a mental handicap) with a certain sense of compassion for a fellow human. Does this not lead to moral conduct?

This argument seems to assume that humans are innately evil, which I disagree with. I know plenty of upright atheists and upright Christians. The absence of penalties does not make valid the assumption that humans will act in a certain way.

Anyways, thanks for your time, hopefully too much of it hasn’t been wasted. It’s been fun, as always, to bring you the fortnightly report. I would like to stress that why I may disagree with some people, it does not mean I don’t like them. I value all of the EMM posters, however small that number is, and appreciate their contributions to this amazing forum.

    Stay tuned for more!

I've just realised we don't have an Arts correspondant. Damn. Well, anyone who wants it, start your engines! Next in the queue (muaha! you must learn my silly english words!) is Rez, reporting on the VV and being sexily Persian about it at the same time.

Hello again history lovers! This week our new editor has warned us that our families will pay if our articles weren't turned in on time. After a few days of consideration i decided it would probably be easier to write an article instead of paying the funeral expenses. So here we are again.

First up Signiferone has very kindly started a new thread dedicated to Roman sculptures. With masterpieces such as this

Its certainly worth a browse to admire some fine art. Or even better to contribute some images that you might think are particularly nice.

The thread itself can be found here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=194972

Second on the roster is Hand of Nergal with what he proclaims as a refreshingly original question. "Who was the worst Roman Emperor?"

Nergal believes that Caligula was the worst of all Roman emperors and he lays down 9 reasons why he thinks this is so. To my mind the 9th reason being quite clearly the most convincing one.

Andrew Murphy brings in quite a strong counter to the claim that Caligula was a sadist although he doesn't offer a replacement for the worst emperor.

Interestingly, his fate was sealed when he extended his list of people to aggrovate and sufficiently irritated an Upper Army Official of the Praetorian Guard. His 'tantrums' only really affected the upper classes and they hated him for it... and guess who got to write the history books in those days? yup. sucks doesn't it...

So far we're mainly hearing a lot of votes for Nero and Caligula and a lot of reasoned rebuttals to those ideas. Get down to the thread and have your say!

Kiljan Arslan is bringing up the rear of this edition with his question on whether or not Christianity retarded Europe. Apparently Kiljan is a little peeved at the idea that some people, the so called rationalists, all believe that Christianity is the sole reason for the supposed dark ages or fall of Europe, whatever that's supposed to be.

Ironblood was the first to really take the bait and list several apparent acts of book burning by Christian authorities. Although Thuidereiks Gunthigg has again happened by and debunked almost every one of the examples on the list.

And a nice summation to finish -

Now, how about you explain why, if it was Christianity that caused the loss of this pagan literature, why don't we see a similar loss in the Eastern Empire? No barbarian invasions there, but plenty of Christianity. Yet no loss.

    Think about it.

Thats all from me this week. I'm off to bar my windows and dig a moat around my house so the Sundance Kid can't destroy me when my work is late again.

Like I would do anything like that, dear Rezothy...Ponti! Go and get Freddie and Massena. They need to pay our friend Rez a visit...oh wait. I'm writing this all in the published edition...crap. No, I'm too lazy to omit it. Hmm...probably should....stop typing.....EDITORIAL TIME!
EditorialsWe have just one editorial this week, from the delightful Elrond, Curial Extremist, Chief Opposition to Anagennese but an all-round cracking chap. This editorial carries an "R" warning for "Risqué" but has been approved wholeheartedly by his Holiness the Sundance. Enjoy it...I certainly did!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Apparently my last editorial was good and the new editor Sundance has let me take his editorial slot. I decided after I did my last editorial that I would talk about Freshers Week, for those of you that don’t know, it’s the name for the first week of University in England, I thought it would be a great idea to write about all the drunken stuff that went on and give my opinion on what university life was like. Some of you might be aware that my plans for Helios stuff have a habit of falling apart, this one didn’t fall apart it just got delayed. Sundance decided to be more of slave driver than his predecessor Scorch – He used to be lax about the Helios release dates, instead of releasing an issue every two weeks it averaged an issue a month, which is good for us but not for Helios readers. Anyway the release date chosen for Helios 31 was 27th September – the day I leave for Uni, so I had to delay Freshers week editorial until Helios 32 and find something else to write about. I chose nationalism at TWC because it really annoys me when hard line nationalist ruin debates by refusing to accept there country is ever wrong while insulting every country which disagrees with theirs. Apparently I am not alone in being annoyed by this so I decided that my editorial for Helios 31 would be about nationalism and its effect on TWC.

Nationalism is common at TWC – debates often degenerate into ‘my country is better than yours’ and sometimes it gets hilarious, one example (which I swear is true) was when a Russian nationalist recently claimed that if there was a war between NATO and Russia, then Russia would reach the Atlantic within a month. He failed to notice things such as NATO having six times the population of Russia as well as NATO spending $800 billion per year on its military compared with Russia spending an estimated $80 billion. That example is far from uncommon as some people will post absolutely anything in order to make there country seem better than their opponents. The thing which I don’t really understand is that members of certain nationalities always seem to say the same thing on a set of issues - its like there is a party line which much be followed. I have never seen a Greek on TWC argue that its fine for Macedonia to keep its current name or a Serbian argue that its fine for Kosovo to be independent, its probably happened but in the numerous mudpit debates on the issues that I have seen it hasn’t happened. I will talk about these to examples later but first I would like to talk about the example of nationalism that I believe is most relevant – Russian nationalism.

Before I begin what is probably the most controversial paragraph of the editorial I feel the need to state that I don’t have a problem with Russians or any other peoples, I do however have a problem with hard line Russian nationalists. There are nationalists representing most countries on TWC – however they are usually in a minority compared with slightly patriotic users from that country. My own country (the UK) is a good example – most brits on the site have a fair amount of patriotism and we have good reason – Britain has a great history but that’s what it is – History – most Brits on TWC know that Britain is not going to surpass or even match its past and we are generally content with being one of several medium sized powers in the world. Even Americans with arguably the best geopolitical position in the world atm don’t metaphorically wave the stars and stripes all the time – many for instance regularly post against the Iraq war. There will be a small minority who will support the US government no matter what but generally most Americans like most citizens of democracies accept the fact that their government screws up allot. Almost every Russian on the site that I am aware of differs from this – they always support the government – I could easily name five who I have never seen criticise the Russian government despite making several posts a day in the Mudpit.

While everyone has the right to free speech this attitude makes it incredibly hard to debate Russia related issues – because the most vocal Russians stick to the Kremlin line – and never deviate, nor will they see Russia’s military with any kind of realism – e.g. that in the absence of Nuclear weapons Russia’s army would be crushed by NATOs overwhelming advantage in numbers and technology. This situation generally leads to what is basically a turf war between a large number of Anti Putin members and Russian nationalists – this occurs simply because there is no give or take – even amnesty international articles are often deemed as western propaganda despite the fact that Amnesty regularly attacks western governments for their terrorism laws etc. I debate regularly in the mudpit and when presented with valid sources ie western or independent Russian media I will generally accept that the story shown is true or that the stats are correct – but it is almost never reciprocated. My personal view is that this occurs simply because independent media will not backup the view that Russia is going to become a super power again and that its military is a match for NATO.

My next point is rarely raised in the D&D because it often leads to a warning for off topic posting – Most Russian nationalists on TWC live outside of Russia – usually in English speaking countries. Mods argue that a member’s personal background is irrelevant but I believe it is in this case – there are a small number of members on the site who are the standard bearers for the country that they rarely visit while repeatedly insulting the governments of the countries that they live in. Not only is it a matter of courtesy to their country of residence it raises the question of how much they are aware of life and attitudes in Russia – in order to afford a couple or more flights a year they are probably much wealthier than normal Russians and as they don’t live in Russia they simply wont hear the day to day views in Russia about the Russian government etc. I think the Pro Kremlin attitude is more to do with national pride rather than policies – Russia has been humiliated since the fall of the Soviet Union and many Russians will completely back any policy or any politician that will restore Russia’s national pride. I don’t think I am alone when I say that a more considered and realistic approach towards Russia’s government would greatly help towards being able to have proper civil debates on topics such as Georgia.

I find the Macedonian naming dispute really amusing – two sets of TWC members regularly clash in the mudpit and often flame each other in order to support their country. After world war two Yugoslavia was reorganised and one of the constituent parts of it was named Macedonia. The Greeks argue that Macedonia wants the land in Northern Greece that was once ruled by Alexander and they argue that the Macedonians are descendants of slavs not descendants of the ancient Macedonians. I think this is a bit of a moot point – I am English and England’s language etc descends from the Angles and the Saxons but I still have as much right to be proud of the achievements of English Celts (e.g. Boudica) as any Welshmen. My view is that the current Macedonians while having a largely Slavic culture will also be descendants of ancient Macedonians and therefore have a right to use the name and claim their heritage. I find the Greek arguments particularly odd – firstly the Ancient Macedonians were not Greek in the same way that the Scots are not English – So I don’t think the Greeks have much of a right to claim Macedonia’s heritage. Secondly they argue that the Macedonians want most of Northern Greece because it was ruled by the Ancient Macedonians – there is no official claim and there never could be a feasible claim as the population of the area is almost entirely Greek. Anyway when a thread is started both sides gather together and start attacking each others arguments (and often each other), no one gives in because there is a party line that has to be followed for each side and no westerner can join in because whichever side which they are arguing against claim that they don’t know what they are talking about. In terms of its actual importance it takes up a disproportional amount of the posting in the pit – I don’t really care about it beyond the annoying fact that a Macedonia v Greece thread is often the first thread in the mud pit or academy.

The Serbia – Kosovo argument is another one of these issues that is over done – lets face it – Kosovo has massive NATO backing and the recognition of the major western states – Serbia isn’t going to rule the area again no matter how much Serbians and their allies complain. I think that this makes it fairly pointless to argue over especially as the vast majority of Kosovans support independence, another thing which I think undermines the nationalist flag waving contest is the fact that the Serbs support the breakaway of the Serbian autonomous republic within Bosnia. My belief about breakaway states is that they will get independence if they have the most important friends and that generally the only reason that Serbians, Bosnians, Georgians, etc oppose their independence is because it harms their national pride. Perhaps the only example were democracy is the most important part is Scotland – like most Englishmen I don’t care if they vote for independence in 2010 but if we were nationalists we would be standing in the mudpit waving Union Jacks arguing that Scotland has been part of the Union for over 300 years and that it must stay that way. I think that there should be independent, free votes in the various breakaway states and if they vote for independence they should get it but that’s never going to happen because it is too sensible and democratic.

While people may argue that the stuff I have written in the past few paragraphs is unimportant, it is because the rampant nationalism in the D&D makes it incredibly hard to debate issues because your consistently arguing against several people who will not admit defeat or change their views no matter what you post – there are many nationalists in the mudpit who post exactly the same views they did a year ago – which shows that they cannot accept any view which is not their own – which makes one wonder why they bother to post if they are not posting to try to draw the arguments to a logical conclusion. If I haven’t been lynched or sacked, my next editorial will be on my first week of Uni – freshers week – I have no idea what will be in it but I hope that I have a great time between now and when I sit down at my desk to write the editorial.

Thanks, I am really pleased with the reaction from those who have read it, both in the helios team and those in the hidden place that we both can see.

My next editorial will be on freshers week, I am working hard on creating stuff to write about. Todays activity includes 5 bars and allot of group singing.
