Sounds like a problem with your soundcard, not really the type of error the mod would give. Try 2D audio.

Its the main menu you get when you first start the game.

Sounds like you need to reinstall. A common problem with this mod.

That depends on what you like if you want to try it copy and paste a unmodded rtw/bi into a different folder so that way you can have more than one mod. Personally I like this for it history and for it game play.

I've played EB and ATW, and I say that your pleasure from either of them will represent your own taste. EB is truly a masterpiece, and it is also highly addictive. ATW is an excellent mod in its own right, but the focus of its content is within a small area. That means that you do not get the diversity of culture or units that you might see with the bigger geography of EB. That is not an inherently bad thing, and I am enjoying exploring a time and place in history that I am not as familiar with while playing ATW. Also, I think that ATW (at least during the first decade) is simply more difficult than EB. I am experienced as a an EB player who specializes in economy, and I still have had to restart my campaigns over and over again until I get to a survivable point.
To put things in perspective when contrasting apples and oranges (EB vs ATW) - ATW is specialized within a certain geographic and historical context, whereas EB is a huge mod that charts the Hellenistic period through the rise of the Roman Empire. That means that the battles in ATW are more realistic (for example) than those in EB in the sense that many Dark age Britain battles really were only between 2500 men on each side. On the other hand, EB has immense diversity, and since all of the factions are Northern European/British in ATW they really don't have nearly the diversity in units or fighting styles that the EB factions are known for. In fact, some factions are really heavily specialized in one type of weapon, so their unit roster consists of "levy spear guy, part time spear guy, professional spear guy, super long spear guy, Really bad@ss heavily armored spear champion that you didn't know existed, horse with spear guy on it". Of course I am over simplifying the lack of unit diversity, but it does serve a purpose with in the mod.
Most of the ATW factions are infantry heavy, and that is because of the time/place in which these wars occurred. EB on the other hand has greater unit diversity, but that reflects the geographic scope of that mod. I think that ATW does a good job of balancing the units and allowing the player to develop an understanding of the subtle differences between different types of infantry. There is actually a lot under the hood with this mod, and it is truly a "full conversion". That said, ATW hasn't enjoyed quite as much popularity as EB, and therefore the mod team isn't as big. The modders are part timers who have real lives (they aren't children) and so the actual final (.8) version has not arrived. Therefore there are a few obvious errors left in this mod, although you can certainly get it to play well if you have the patience to implement the tweaks that are in the bug reports forum.
I also recommend the Force diplomacy script that was copied from the EB version. As for vista compatibility, I do not know since my computer is old, which is why i am playing RTW mods in the first place. I have ATW and EB both installed on my computer at the moment. The key is that EB makes its own installation in an RTW folder labeled "activision" whereas ATW is installed in the RTW folder labeled "the creative assembly".

I also think you installed it wrong...

    Instructions:

    1. Make sure you got a clean BI 1.6 installation.

    2. Download ATW 0.6 http://www.megaupload.com/dk/?d=6HHK8X9M and ATW - Raven Feeders http://www.megaupload.com/dk/?d=PVQ58CHB

    3. Unpack first "ArthurianTW.rar" and then "ATW 0.7 - The Raven-Feeders.rar" into your Rome - Total War directory

    4. Create a shortcut

    5. Play the game!
