Thread: FKoC: Information, progress and To-do list

  1. #1

Default FKoC: Information, progress and To-do list

    General information:

"For King or Country" is a mod that depicts the English civil wars. There are two factions; the Parliamentarians and the Royalists. The map is detailed and accurate for the time period. There are twelve historical commanders fighting on each side, and all of them have custom portraits and traits. Both sides have a range of units from Musketeers to pikemen, dragoons to harqebusier cavalry. Each faction also has 6 unique recruitable regiments of foot. Each regiment has it's own banner, coat colour and commander.

The purpose of the mod is to simulate the first English civil war. The main aim is to accurately represent the two main factions, their leaders, their commanders and their armies. The mod aims to provide a unique battlefield experience by representing 17th century warfare, something that no M2:TW mod team has so far achieved.

The campaign map is unique in that rather than having 'regions' or 'provinces' there are historically accurate counties. Each county has a single settlement. Faction generals are accurately placed according to their historical location in 1642 and represented with custom portraits and regiments.

No historical battles for version 1. The campaign takes priority.

There's a lot of reasons why it hasn't drawn much attention.

    • It's still only a month old.
    • No news has been posted on twcenter or any other website.
    • There's no website or wiki page.
    • I haven't made any attempt to 'advertise' it.

There are also a number of reasons why it won't ever draw much attention.

    • It only has 2 factions, most people think you need 31 factions for a mod to be taken seriously.
    • Both factions are English.
    • There's no French faction to beat up.
    • It's an unglamorous period of history that few know anything about.
    • The map focuses on a tight geographic area rather than a continent.
    • It's only cool to make a mod with a 'world map' these days.
    • There's no green ork things, mythical beasts, 3 foot tall men with hammers or any kind of fantasy element.
    • Rosters lack the variation most TW players have become used to since MED2's release.
    • The short period of time means there're no real tech upgrades.
    • ETW with it's "FIFTEE OHZ MYZ GODZZZ" factions is always going to draw the attention. Little do they realise that 90% of the factions and their units are going to be cloned.

I knew all of this before I even put pen to paper, let alone mouse to ms3d.

My hope all along has been that a few core ECW fans will pick it up and enjoy it, for the level of historical research that has gone in to it has been immense.

    Cheers

You're just putting yourself down, this mod is good with 2 factions, makes it much quicker to produce, and makes a far more in-depth game for each faction, and whereas 31 factions would have like what 20 units each? You could (although you're not going to) expand to have 150 units per faction!!!

I've added in the final 3 cavalry units. Cavalry now wear the correct colour sashes. Parliamentarian cavalry wear the Earl of Essex's orange. Royalist cavalry wear the Kings red.

And that is why I think this mod is so great. It concentrates on such and interesting and globally important events that make the UK the nation it is today. I also love its simplicity, depth and uniqueness

Seconded. This mod will get a lot of attention, when people see how well it is designed, and i'm sure my expectation will be satisfied.

I'm only wondering why it is built on M2 and not on Kingdoms, as for the few but significant features that Kingdoms comes with.

Btw., if you need beta-testing, then i would be happy to get access to the mods' stage to check out ie. the balance, seeing this item is first at 60% developed. Just in case, please pm me, because i haven't the time to follow these threads often.
