    I am sure many already know it, but for those who do not know it; I would like to recommend reading Vagabond. It's a manga about Musashi Miyamoto, its story is part historical and part fictional. [sorry, comment partially removed according to TWC rules - Seiji]

    draws too slow, read the book that its based on or watch the movies.
    i have the hk version, its in full color.

    There are some fascinating mangas are ongoing in japan.

    "センゴク(SENGOKU)" by Miyashita Hideki

    "センゴク(SENGOKU)" is a manga about samurai 仙石秀久(Sengoku Hidehisa)
    who serves for 豊臣秀吉(Toyotomi Hideyoshi) and 徳川家康(Tokugawa Ieyasu),
    also he was regarded as a Daimyo and gave
    淡路国(Awaji Province) and 讃岐国(Sanuki Province) by 豊臣秀吉(Toyotomi Hideyoshi).
    In Manga "センゴク(SENGOKU)",
    You can find a appearance of most realistic warfare of Sengoku-era Japan.
    to write this Manga,Miyashita did a In-depth research of both old texts
    and Historical battlefields in Japan.

    "へうげもの(Hyouge-mono)" by Yamada Yoshihiro

    "へうげもの(Hyouge-mono)" is a manga about samurai"古田 重然(Furuta Shigenari)",
    who is also famous as the founder of the 織部流(Oribe Ryū school)of 茶道(Japanese Tea Ceremony).
    "へうげもの(Hyouge-mono)" forcuses not only in warfares but more cultural aspects of Sengoku-era Japan.
    "古田 重然(Furuta Shigenari)" was lived as a samurai in his early life,
    but he considered himself as an artist in later life.
    in this manga,there is a lot of descriptions about "茶道(the way of tea)" and Art and Buildings of Sengoku-era Japan.

    but if you could get them,you should read them.
