Thread: AAR Competitions - How do you want it?

  1. #1

Icon1 AAR Competitions - How do you want it?

Well, we started the first official After-Action Report Competition, and hurray for this event!

In the future, we'd like to improve the structure of this competition, and I need to hear your opinion about this.

(Note: the result of this poll will not affect the structure of this month's competition. We'll implement the changes (if necessary) from the next month.)

We've got 3 issues to deal with:

    1. Periodicity (the time range of the competitions):
    1. monthly (current)
    2. bimonthly

    2. Voting rights (who can vote for the best AAR):
    1. any TWC member can vote (current)
    2. critic members of an appointed committee vote (f.e. this)

    3. Divisions (how should we define the nomination categories):
    1. by games (Rome Total War / Medieval II Total War) (current)
    2. by genres (f.e. chronicle, comedy, hero-based, etc.)

I believe it's a good start to go with option 1 (monthly / any TWC member can vote / by games).

1 month + 2 weeks voting is long enough due to the fact that you can always bring in your old AAR, as long as you update.

any TWC Member is fine too - makes ppl happier when they can influence things

competition by games is fine also.

    I selected the current structure.

Looks like the current structure is going to triumph.
It's always good to manage these issues democratically.
That's what I like the most about TWC.

I voted for "other structure", but my idea is the same as the current structure.

What is different is the voting. Everyone can vote for what they believe to be the top 3 AARs, in order from best to worst. Each person's "1st Place" AAR is given 3 vote points, while 2nd and 3rd get 2 and 1 points, respectively.

In the end, the AAR with the most points wins.

This doesn't change the system much at all; and it may actually make it easier for our voters in choosing which AARs to vote for. It's mainly geared so that the 2nd and 3rd place winners are easier to select at the end.

@Benz282, I wanted to include the issue, but there would have been too many poll options.

BTW what you talk about is similar to what I thought of:

We could also solve this issue by voting "manually", by posting the best 3 AARs.

I think the first option is best, because it is both simple to understand, and also doesn't cause much confusion.

I think perhaps the Fuzz is right...After all thats a pretty huge list to be dominated by one AAR.

The Fuzz, I read your proposal and liked it and tried to include it in this poll.
The majority has decided to go with this structure: monthly / any TWC member can vote / sub-divided by games.
Besides, the genres could cause a little confusion here, because there are AARs which fall into several categories. And I don't see much difference in a "Historical" and a "Narrative" AAR.

Being critical is good up to a certain point, but you have to admit we're doing a good and positive thing here, that will boost AAR activity, bring together the geeks, hail the best ones etc. etc.

I just read The Fuzz's idea on the thread (I didn't use the link, somehow I found it) and I agree with him.

I just couldn't think of any way to split them back then. And his idea of making it longer would be nice, that would make the shinies harder to obtain and more valuable.

Good idea, I'm thinking how could we implement it.

Me? Come on, I know I talk to Imb a lot, but this is too much to ask of me. I'm already trying to get some sub-forums for some guys.

Or was that not directed to me?

The current system has just about everyone vote for the same thing, and if it were split into catagories, each with their own awards/points (might be an idea, to have different awards for different styles), things would probably be a lot more even per group.

Except whichever group gets the AAR that is winning.

Okay, give me the genres you want to include.

    Um...here is The Fuzz's ideas:

Narrative--The usual sort of AAR, dialogue, characters, exposition, etc etc

    Comedy--Written for the lulz, duh.

Historical--Goes for a historically accurate AAR, or one told like in a history book. Of course sometimes an AAR can be historical and narrative...so nominate it for both.

Graphical--Some people are just good with screenshots OR with editing.
Graphical - No, it really shouldn't be a group for AARs, in my opinion

    Comedy - Sure

Narrative - If it focusses on oneor a couple of characters, then yeah

Historical - Someone trying to recreate the Roman Empire? Good for here

Campaign - A record of a campaign, similar to my Carthage AAR. Just writing what I'm doing, adding stories and such, but revolves around everything in my faction, not just a specific person or goal.

Again, what's the difference between a "campaign", a "narrative" and a "historical" AAR?

historical, I think would be like both SBH's AARs. Narrative would be more writing based, like mollsomg's AAR, or indeed mine (the last two of my updates don't have a single battle in).

Campaign I suppose is like Benz's AAR, CJ's and Rise of the Eastern Kingdom.
