Ok, I've made more changes according to LucretiusTC's information, and I have a couple comments overall. One, I don't wish to make a city a huge city merely for a special temple or wonder, if it is a huge city, great, if not, too bad. Two, I think Gaul has enough huge cities, it is after all a barbarian area. So I think only the absolute largest possible settlements there should be come huge cities.

Expand your borders, a mod based on XGM 5.

I agree with you. Maybe those Gallic Huge Cities should have some kind of penalties to slow down their population growth comparing to the Greek and Roman cities. Besides we could try to cut down the number of the Celtic huge cities in Gallia Transalpine from 5 to 3. Those Top3 Huge Cities could be Tolosa (the wealthiest one), Gergovia (the chief town of powerful Arverni tribe) and Avaricum (located in very fertile lands) and then Bibracte and Cenabum would be just Large Cities. Would this make sense?

That's good. Including Mediolanum (which got huge as a Roman city) and the two nearby Greek colonies I think that suits the area quite well.

Now I agree with you Caesar. As wonders could not upgrade and no such a special thing in last level of DimeBagHo's special temples in 5.7.13 as well as DimeBagHo has no future plan for this, so there are no need for Ambracia, Thermon, Carna, and Siwa to be huge cities in this moment.

I must confess that I really want LV5 temple_sp to have some small global effect(behave like mini wonders) but Dime doesn't like this idea.

As we know the most advanced of the Iberians lived in communities on the eastern coast, and they were considerably influenced by Greek and Phoenician merchants and immigrant colonies, who contributed much to their culture and political organization. Ancient Hispanic societies were increasingly primitive and less politically and technologically advanced the farther they were from the south and east and the nearer to the north and west. The tribes of the southern part of the central plateau revealed a transitional pattern; they were partly urbanized and semiliterate but proportionately more rural and pastoral than their counterparts to the south and east.

So I´ve been thinking that those Huge Cities of the Iberian Peninsula should include these coastal cities: Gadir, Carthago Nova, Saguntum and Emporion. In this case Saguntum would be the only "original" Iberian Huge City, and Iruna would be a Large City, but if the Iberians had any luck against the Carthaginians and the Greeks, they can have access to other big cities too.

I guess now this question of Huge Cities should be clear and we can move on to the next chapter...

The civilians lived around the fortress, down the mountain on man-made terraces. Dacian nobility had flowing water, brought through ceramic pipes, in their residences. The archaeological inventory found at the site shows that Dacian society had a high standard of living. The Roman conquerors established a military garrison there. Later, the capital of Roman Dacia was named after the Dacian capital—Colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa, established 40 km from the ruined Dacian capital. This second city was the biggest city in Roman Dacia, with a partly conserved forum, an amphitheatre, and several temples. The city was destroyed by the Goths.)(by Suppanut)

So, how many Huge cities are you planning to take as a whole? I think at least Corinth and Ecbatana have strong reasons to belong that group. They are kind of classic cities in the history...:hmmm:

On the other hand, if you are planning to remove some of those Huge Cities, there are quite many of them in Asia Minor. In the Hellenistic Era Sardis and Side might be closer to Large Cities at least comparing to Ephesus and Pergamon.

Hecatompylos should definitely belong to the huge cities list, it was to to become the parthian capital later and still important before

If we change according to these then we would have 62 huge cities.

    Default Re: Extended Cultures (XC)

Here is a list that includes 60 huge cities based on our discussions and suggestions so far. I have tried to combine various historical information (inc. the most obvious big cities at the time), geographical conditions (e.g. fertile soil, desert, mountainous, etc.), urban traditions, and the gameplay. Besides I have tried to make relative comparisons between the regions, e.g. Ephesus (huge), Pergamum (huge), Sardis (large) and Cyzicus (large). So here is the list with two bubbling under candidates (60+2):

    • Tribus_Trinovantes Camulodunum (Briton)
    • Tribus_Chattii Mattium (Germanic)
    • Bastetania Carthago_Nova
    • Turdetania Gadir
    • Beribracia Saguntum (Iberian)
    • Ceretania Emporion
    • Cisalpine_Gaul Mediolanium
    • Transalpine_Gaul Massilia
    • Narbonensis Tolosa
    • Tribus_Eravisci Aquincum
    • Arvernia Gergovia
    • Biturigia Avaricum
    • Thrace Seutopolis (Thracian)
    • Propontis Byzantium
    • Bosphorus Panticapaeum
    • Sogdiana Maracanda
    • Tribus_Dahae Nisa
    • Tribus_Yuezhe Kashgar
    • Armenia_Maior Armavir
    • Armenia Thospia
    • Paphlagonia Sinope
    • Cappadocia Mazaka
    • Bithynia Nicomedia
    • Cilicia Tarsus
    • Pontus_Minor Trapezus
    • Pontus Amasia
    • Etruria Arretium
    • Umbria Ariminum
    • Latium Rome
    • Calabria Tarentum
    • Campania Capua
    • Media Ecbatana
    • Margiana Merv
    • Hyrcania Zadracarta
    • Tabiena Gabae
    • Persis Istakhr
    • Parthyene Hecatompylos
    • Macedonia Pella
    • Attica Athens
    • Arcadia Corinth
    • Aeolis Pergamum
    • Ionia Ephesus
    • Rhodos Rhodes
    • Sicilia_Graecus Syracuse
    • Saba Mariaba
    • Syria Antioch
    • Phoenicia Sidon
    • Coele_Syria Damascus
    • Judaea Hierosolyma / Jerusalem
    • Babylonia Seleucia
    • Elymais Susa
    • Zeugitana Carthage
    • Byzacium Hadrumetum
    • Locus_Massyli Hippo Regius
    • Cyrenaica Cyrene
    • Nile_Delta Alexandria
    • Middle_Egypt Memphis
    • Thebais Thebes
    • Bactria Bactra
    • Sind Patala (Indian)
    • Gandhara Taxila (Indian)
    Plus two bubbling under candidates:
    • Maeotis Tanais (Scythian)
    • Kush Meroe (Nubian)
About the chances of Meroe to become a huge city, here is a good story about the wealth of Kush:
“During antiquity the Kingdom of Kush, it is said, was one of the richest countries of the known world. This was due more to the mineral wealth of the border lands to the east of the Nile than to the core of the kingdom itself. Kush was one of the main gold-producing areas in the ancient world. Gold was mined between the Nile and the Red Sea, mostly in the part to the north of the eighteenth parallel, where traces of ancient mining are to be found. Excavations at Meroe and Musawwarat es-Sufra have revealed temples with walls and statues covered by gold leaf. Gold and its export not only were one of the main sources of the wealth and greatness of the kingdom, but greatly influenced foreign relations with Egypt and Rome. It has been computed that during antiquity Kush produced about 51,440,000 ounces of pure gold, worth about $22 billion at todays value.”

So, what do you think? Does this list make sense to you, guys? :hmmm:

Ok, I've added Ecbatana, Corinth, Meroe, and readded Hecatompylos, and I removed Side (I'm just a softy at heart). That should give 65 huge cities pretty well spread out.
I'm going to release a new version soon that will restrict the huge cities to these provinces.

How did you get the sum of 65 huge cities?

Does it include Palmyra, Sardis, and Cenabum that are not in the list I proposed (62 names if includes Meroe and Tanais)?

One of the reasons why I am a little bit doubtful about Palmyra is that harsh desert enviroment that the city was surrounded. It sets certain natural limits to its growth, I think. But this is not a big question to me, just some extra speculation...history is full of interpretations and alternative theories...

Well, I didn't actually count, I was going off of Suppanut's list.

I just counted and found 63 cities.

Though I may remove Palmyra, partly because of its desert location and partly because there are a lot of large cities in that area (more than anywhere else I think.)

Palmyra is already of the huge city list.

Otherwise, Sardis is still in, but Cenabum is out.

So if I take out Palmyra that would be 62 huge cities. (Tanais is not in the list for the main campaign.)

So 63 is the current number.

So, the Final List of the Huge Cities should look like this (63+1):

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

    • Tribus_Trinovantes Camulodunum (Briton)
    • Tribus_Chattii Mattium (Germanic)
    • Bastetania Carthago_Nova
    • Turdetania Gadir
    • Beribracia Saguntum (Iberian)
    • Ceretania Emporion
    • Cisalpine_Gaul Mediolanium
    • Transalpine_Gaul Massilia
    • Narbonensis Tolosa
    • Tribus_Eravisci Aquincum
    • Arvernia Gergovia
    • Biturigia Avaricum
    • Thrace Seutopolis (Thracian)
    • Propontis Byzantium
    • Bosphorus Panticapaeum
    • Sogdiana Maracanda
    • Tribus_Dahae Nisa
    • Tribus_Yuezhe Kashgar
    • Armenia_Maior Armavir
    • Armenia Thospia
    • Paphlagonia Sinope
    • Cappadocia Mazaka
    • Bithynia Nicomedia
    • Cilicia Tarsus
    • Lydia Sardis
    • Pontus_Minor Trapezus
    • Pontus Amasia
    • Etruria Arretium
    • Umbria Ariminum
    • Latium Rome
    • Calabria Tarentum
    • Campania Capua
    • Media Ecbatana
    • Margiana Merv
    • Hyrcania Zadracarta
    • Tabiena Gabae
    • Persis Istakhr
    • Parthyene Hecatompylos
    • Macedonia Pella
    • Attica Athens
    • Arcadia Corinth
    • Aeolis Pergamum
    • Ionia Ephesus
    • Rhodos Rhodes
    • Sicilia_Graecus Syracuse
    • Saba Mariaba
    • Syria Antioch
    • Phoenicia Sidon
    • Coele_Syria Damascus
    • Judaea Hierosolyma / Jerusalem
    • Babylonia Seleucia
    • Elymais Susa
    • Zeugitana Carthage
    • Byzacium Hadrumetum
    • Locus_Massyli Hippo Regius
    • Cyrenaica Cyrene
    • Nile_Delta Alexandria
    • Middle_Egypt Memphis
    • Thebais Thebes
    • Kush Meroe
    • Bactria Bactra
    • Sind Patala (Indian)
    • Gandhara Taxila (Indian)
    64. Maoetis Tanais (provincial campaign)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, this should be ready. 63/196 makes about 32%, it sounds good to me. It should give some extra weight to those huge cities in the game, like those special buildings give some extra value to some other settlements on the campaign level.
