    You are a dentist, right?

I think you told me before, but this sentence gave you away.

    Just kidding.

This is probably really stupid of me but I can't find the XC file to download, just the basic one. Where can I get this?
    That's my fault.
I was updating the version, and I removed the old version, but then I realized there was still a bit more to be done on the new version. It'll be up shortly.
    It's up now.

    Suppanut,
I'll make sure to add some health restrictions and happiness bonuses or something.

There is matter I could use help on. I'm not really sure which cities should be able to be come huge cities, so far I've kept it to ones that are capitols or otherwise important as I understand them.

I think barbarian factions should suffer more severe penalty on health and growth from government building LV4-5 than civilized factions to made sure that their city would not grown to LV5 population by themselves.

We can start with the obvious ones:

    Athens
    Syracuse
    Pella
    Rome
    Mediolanum
    Carthage
    Rhodes
    Massalia
    Carthago Nova
    Seleucia
    Alexandria
    Antioch

I believe I already got all of those, except Rhodes and maybe Mediolanum. TO find which cities are set as huge, just check the base descr_regions file, and search "hugecity".

Besides those cities we could probably name Ephesus, Pergamum and Memphis. If the city had a real growth potential, those city populations seem to reach their peaks during the late Hellenistic and early Roman period. Here are some estimates that I found about ancient city populations at their peak between 500 BCE and 150 CE:

    Rome – c. 1000000 (100 CE)
    Alexandria – c. 500000 - 750000
    Carthage – 700000 (before 146 BCE); 350000 – 500000 (100 CE)
    Seleucia on the Tigris – c. 600000
    Antioch on the Orontes – c. 500000
    Syracuse – c. 300000
Athens – c. 250000 (around 450 BCE including its home territory Attica).
Ephesus – 250000 (another estimate gives the number 500000 in 100 CE)
    Pergamon – c. 120000 - 150000 (100 CE)
    Memphis – c. 50000 – 200000 (the Ptolemaic era)

Those estimates are just rough guide to put those cities in some kind of order. Besides they should be fixed suitable for this game and the XGM timeframe (starting c. 300 BC and ending c. 14 AD). There probably should be at least one huge city in the Indus valley e.g. Taxila. We should think about especially those regions that had a long urban history and enough wealth to support a big city like in the obvious cases of Alexandria in Egypt and Seleucia in Babylonia. Bactra could be also a good choice when we think about the combination of fertile Bactrian soil and the Silk Road that brought money to the city.

Otherwise I don´t know what would be the reasonable number for those huge cities that would support the gameplay...:hmmm:

    Thanks, Lucretius.

With those, the number is now up to 41 cities which can become huge. I've included some barbarian cities in that count, mostly capitols, that is Bibracte, Gergovia, Teutoburgum, Tyde, and Seutopolis, I also added in Camulodunum, and with Mediolanum that's seven cities that start in Barbarian hands that can become huge.

Here is ripping from Archbaker's private message on huge cities which I think it is useful and informative.
Tribus_Trinovantes Camulodunum briton maybe >10,000(Post-Boudica)(as Londonium could archive it and for gameplay reason as capital of Britannia/place of specia;l temple "Stonehenge)
Is this the current name for Londinium? If so, I think it should be able to become a huge city. It is a stretch in this time frame, but if a barbarian race were to create an empire this would be the sort of place where a huge city could develop. The same is not true for the German or Celtic capitols in the game because they only represent tribal settlements and not actual towns or cities.

    Cimbrica Hafnia germanic

Small Rant: Hafnia (modern-day Copenhagen) did not even exist in this time frame. It is first mentioned in the Dark Ages and does not even become a city in any sense of the word until a thousand years after our time period. It is also not located in the Jutland peninsula but rather on Zealand (the larger of the two islands to the east of Jutland).
The most obvious location for a settlement in cimbrica would be north of the deep inlet in Jutland, but the current location is quite convenient, so I would keep it as is.
However, if possible, I would change the name to something less specific like Campus/Vicus/Domus Cimbrii.
By the way, the port city belonging to the settlement in Cimbrica is exactly where I am located. But to get back on topic, this should not become a huge city.

    Tribus_Chattii Mattium germanic
Larger than most settlements in the north, but not big enough to be a huge city, unless you really need one in the region.

    Bastetania Carthago_Nova iberia
A barbarian city with enough civilised influence to justify letting it become a huge city. I think the Iberians, alone among the western barbarians, deserve a huge city in their homelands because being 'civilised barbarians' is part of their identity in the game.

    Propontis Byzantium thrace
This is the most obvious huge city for Thrace as it became possibly the most important city in the world shortly after our period.

    Dalmatia Apollonia illyria
A city that was apparently quite large in our time period. I have no population estimate, but it was famous for having a huge harbour.

    Maeotis Tanais steppe
    Scythia Olbia steppe
Two candidates for a huge city on the steppes. These both had enough civilised influence to justify having them grow to become huge cities. However, as far as I can tell, Olbia was never very large, so I would recommend Tanais if you need a huge city here.

    Regnum_Bosphoranum Panticapaeum crimea
A fairly large city and one-time capitol which I imagine could have grown larger still if it had remained a local power.

    Taurica Neapolis_Scythica crimea
Another one-time capitol with Hellenistic influences.

    Sogdiana Maracanda east steppe
Silk road location and at one time the seat of a satrap. It much later became the famous city of Samarkand.

    Tribus_Dahae Nisa east steppe
May have been a Parthian capitol and was at least a fairly culturally advanced city with rather large-scale architecture.

    Tribus_Yuezhe Kashgar east steppe
Barely even part of (what we think of as) the Classic world, but an old and influential city on the Silk Road.

    Colchis Kotais armenia
    Atropatene Phraaspa armenia
    Armenia_Maior Armavir armenia
Three local capitol cities. If having to choose one, I would say Armavir. If two, Phraaspa and Armavir.

    Paphlagonia Sinope anatolia
This city appears to have been an important local power with its own colonies.

    Cappadocia Mazaka anatolia
Very old. Cappadocian capitol. Located on Silk Road.

    Bithynia Nicomedia anatolia
An important city in the region.

    Galatia Ancyra anatolia
Not as influential in our period, and mainly inhabited by 'barbarians', but a very old city which gre several times before and after our period.

    Cilicia Tarsus anatolia
Some reputation as a centre of learning.

    Lydia Sardis anatolia
One of the great cities of the region.

    Caria Halicarnasus anatolia
Rather famous, and Herodotus was born here.

    Pamphylia Side anatolia
Moderately large, quite wealthy and partly independent city with strong Hellenistic culture.

    Pontus Amasia anatolia
    Hellenistic Pontic capitol.

    Umbria Ariminum italy
    Large growth under Augustus.

    Calabria Tarentum italy
Once a serious enemy of Rome.

    Campania Capua italy
A notoriously large and wealthy town in a densely populated part of Italia.

I've added several cities to the list of huge cities. And my current proposals (which I mostly added due to gameplay reasons) are certainly visible, just look through descr_regions in XC, though I think you got all the ones I included.

I think we should also add Susa to the list of huge cities. Historically it belongs to the same group with the other classic Eastern capitals like Babylon, Ecbatana, and Persepolis. Later in the Parthian Empire Susa was made one of the two capitals (along with Ctesiphon) of the new state.

BTW, it is interesting to see how the capital of Mesopotamia has remained about the same area despite the new rulers: Babylon > Seleucia (305 BCE) > Ctesiphon > Baghdad (since 764 CE)...:hmmm:

To clarify, the private message I sent to Suppanut is supposed to read as a list of cities that could be used as huge cities, rather than of those that absolutely should be used, which I think have already been mentioned.

Exactly which ones to use should depend on how developed you want the regions to be. For instance, you may not want a lot of huge cities in the far north or on the central steppes, but on the other hand you might want to make sure every faction can get to a huge city, or even that each faction has a starting city that can become huge.

I'm trying to go a close to historical accuracy as I can, but when possible I'd like to have at least one huge city in every major area, and I already got Susa.

Just check out XC's descr_regions with a search for "hugecity" for the initial list

Again, thanks for all your input, guys.

In the end, there should be around 50-75 huge cities. Out of nearly 200 settlements, that's enough.
