Question about a planned music-mod

Well, there seem to be many players who'd love to hear new music. Maybe added with some mod/update or the next version of SS.
As we all know there would occur some copyright problems by just ripping of various tracks from xyz.

So my question is kinda simple: If someone (f.e. myself) want to use "free tracks" (f.e. from MySpace Bandpages, Last.fm, OverClocked Remixes), is it stil required to ask the author for permission?
IMO: The tracks are approved to be downloaded be everyone and used by everyone (non-commercial).

I'm asking because there are some great tracks out there from bands like Arcana for instance, which would fit quiet well.

sup, just wanna add, one of the user did add a music mod, very good in the mod forum, cuz of the patten issue, it was taken off, search around, you will find the site, called 4winds.
