    Default Imperial Japan-what if?

ok, another alternate universe 'what if' game
this time, would imperial japan still be a world power today if they'd stayed neutral throughout the whole 2nd world war?
if they jsut held onto korea, taiwan, manchuria etc and not caused much waves?
obviously the chinese would've had something to say about that, but would the united nations post 1945 in this hypothetical world of having defeated hitler have made japan give up its ill-gotten gains?

I think not because they wouldn't have the numbers to match US and CHina

well, the events are chained together, unless Japan suddenly changed their mind after 1930's annex of Machuria and descided to develope , what happened next was fairly inevitable.

it's like thinking what happened if Gemany had stopped after taking France... like that coulda happened

Japan attacked the Dutch and the Brits and then the US because it was under economic embargo and cut off from the oil of Indonesia. The embargo was set up because of the war with China. So the only way for Japan to remain an empire after WW2 would have been to refrain from attacking China after setting up Manchuko.

Or, optimally for Japan, the Chineese accepted the "Seven Secret Demands" and then had a springboard for more Imperialism.

Then most European countries, would still be in control of their former colonies in Asia. Or at least kept them longer, and released them more peacefully. America would join WW2 later, or maybe not at all?

That would be fairly unlikely. afterall, while Japan was a rising power, it's hardly the USA of it's days. the Soviets on their back and the league of nations severing ties with them, and every western country with holdings in east / south east asia wary of their arrgession.

Japan actually did try to slowly cut up China through non-total war methods, and they succeded to an extend, using Machuria incident as a base they pulled off similar tricks several time in northern china and inner mongolia, at the end though the KMT couldn't withstand the pressure anymore (and the whole CCP incident of kidnapping Chang) and finally when they attempted similar tactics on Beijing all hell set loose.

Japan's hope was that they could end the war in China quickly, that proved to be way too optimistic. while Chang Kai Shiek is often criticized everywhere. his strategy seem to have proved to be fairly effective. by blowing up the dam on the Yellow river he forced the Japanese to try and pull off an amphibious war on Shanghai and march up the Yangtsi, instead of running wild in northern China where their technological superiorty in mobility would be huge and had the KMT forces tried to fight them there, they would most likely been annihlated simply be being out manuvered and out gunned by tanks. by fighting along the cities and rivers that at least reduced the Japanese' technological advantage considerablly.

things went according to his plan on a bigger scale. as most of the major fighting happened around the Yangtsi river. and the Japanese were forced to made a bloody push up the river. Japanese forces in the north never got strong enough to force themself down from the north into Sichuan. (where Sichuan was relatively more vunerable. as oppose to trying to somehow fight through those crazy gorges up the Yangtsi)

US would never have joined WW2, Britain would have won with her other allies and still have an Empire and be the dominant power in the world suppose the saying is true though, good things always come to an end

In the Atlantic the Us navy was at war with Germany although there was no official declaration of war. So Us would join the war sooner or later.
