    Default Installation problems - FAQ

In light of recent spamming with the installation threads, and given the fact replying consumes portion of my time not really small, I have decided to go for this.

    1. Im installing the SPQR, how I do that?
reply : since most of you are apparently lazy enough to read the readme file, let me put it this way then -
    a) install your Rome Total War game. It doesnt matter whether you have normal game and separate datadiscs or you possess a gold edition. Only notable thing about them - different versions and different default installation directory. You might as well be watchul of these elements.
This is what we call a clean installation of RTW Vanilla (w/wo DDエs)

    b) Find your installed game, and select ENTIRE folder (like C:\Rome Total War - Anthology - my case), press copy, and paste it to SOMEPLACE else, liek special folder C:\RTW - SPQR copy
Now you have a standalone copy of your game, that is NOT connected with the game that is installed on your HDD, ie upon uninstalling the original game, this one will stay there. It maybe be bit of HDD heavy, but keeps you with a clean installation of a game in case your SPQR mounting fails. Its faster to try again this way.

    c) Download the SPQR Executable file from either locations given either in this thread http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=105433; or you can use newly created download location by Hesus -
http://files.filefront.com/SPQR+64+F.../fileinfo.html , both should be working. Make sure you download it entirely, well you would get a corrupted file message otherwise.
Now you do have a clean backup version, extra copy for your SPQR mod and the SPQR mod executable file.

    d) Install the SPQR mod. There goes most of your problems. Whenever you are doing this, you ULTIMATELY MUST point the exe.file to the right direction, as I stated in other thread, SPQR is NOT a stand-alone mod, and it required full installed RTW to work on. It is essential thus to install correctly. So when your copy of RTW looks like C:\RTW - SPQR\Rome Total War - Anthology (my case), you MUST MUST and MUST point the installation to this location. BE warned that it wont ask about any overwriting, nor abotu anything, it just extracts the files. If you did it right, there will be no extra folders in that directory, and I hope you all know what I mean, but just to make sure - in above example of ....\Rome Total War - Anthology, in this sub-directory, you will not see other directories like Data etc over or under it...they will all be in which means you have done the installation right.

NOTE that you MUST have the right version (1.5) for SPQR to run properly.

Above stated is ideal way of installing. However it seems we have run into series of troubles that prevent some more players from enjoying this wonderful mod...

    TROUBLESHOOTING
    1) taken from http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=171643 thread
HOW THE HELL DO I DOWNLOAD THE MOD,
    everytime it screws up -
We have realized the fact, that some download servers can go busier then busy, and this may cancel your mod downloading, as much as single lost ping command will stop it. Firewall related issues are a question, but as I have tried and tested, most of the problems lies with host servers of the file. All we can advise is to try again, use different locations, different servers, different time (when not so busy)

    2) taken from http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=171643 thread
wait...i have xgm and invasio barborum on my comp is that the problem ...// i just uninstalled all the mods on my computer and its still screwing up - Of course it is. As you most likely know, most mods (except for XGM which is kinda extraterrestial in this manner) overwrite some files, thus uninstalling them is not an option. Whenever you are using other mods, you MUST ultimately manually delete everything left in there in order to do something with it again. However, there will be nothing left so its kinda weird question. Important fact is, you CANNOT install SPQR over other mods, that is why I have urged for extra SPQR copy of vanilla RTW game, to make sure there is nothing to interfere with it.
Answer - clean copy, no other mods, follow procedure as above

    3) taken from this thread http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=171325,
I wont point out any specific question since that guy was spamming like mad. In general, he was confused about where to install the mod and also about the versions. I already mentioned the fact, that different game releases use different install directories and versions, while SPQR executable file uses one and one only, so manual pointing to the right place is imminent in this matter. GREATLY EXPLAINED IN THIS PICTURE
    http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/2792/14629912ag2.jpg
and to find more about it, I suggest reading through the posts of jumbo297 in this thread http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=171898, where you can read more about it all, well not more, but more simple way.

    4) taken from thread http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=171288,
    it dousn't work, it says:

    ERROR: Filename dousn't exict:
    Data/model_building/spot_fx/spot_fx_roman_town_gate.CAS
// my whole map of spot_FX and model_spot and trees are empty , and similar missing files.
SOlution is simple, although time costly. There is a certain procedure that is good to follow wheneever you are experiencing this problem or other graphic related problem.
    1) Check your video card drivers, check your directx version, sometimes check video codecs as that may help.
    2) After you are done with point one and still having troubles, basic option is to install everything all over again, procedure is stated above
    3) If you are experiencing the problems even then, launch the game using -show_err command, and show the result here on site so we can help

    5) CTD - aka Crash to Desktop
one thread lately - http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=172487 , but problem of the guy was already given solution for here - remnants of other mods. But in general talking about CTDエs, they are more of an errors that are harder to handle. To countermeasure them, first its good to use the -show_err command, or in case you are lazy to wait for reply from us, install everything again (Which is pretty much universal solution to everything). But note that tampering with other mods, your attempts to mod something, moving files etc., will most likey result in crashing the game.

    6) last thread http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=172006, is reffering to patch problems. Some older game releases might not be updated to 1.5 for RTW or 1.6 for BI, so you might need to do that manually with downloaded executable files. Note that this is official part of game, and needs no manual interfering whatsoever, all you need to do is check the game version in options to determine what you have / if you need to update. Its simple, but can be confusing.

    7) Special point out about SPQR version, script and add-on
Since there is a final 6.4 version out, well - each versions are not compatible with each other, related mostly to save games, so you need to start all over again. I guess no problem, its great game about the script - as is stated in readme for the 4TPY + Gar S, it is imperative to not forget activating it, as it is not guaranteed save games will work upon loading. You might find yourself stuck with useless empire because you will not be able to play it. Add-on, well, although it brings new data in, it is save game compatible, so unless you manipulate the data in order to gain some advantage, you should be okay to go

Woah, I think I have included very much of problems encountered last days, I will update the list as we will come across new problems regarding this. In case I have put in a wrong solution, feel free to write it either here or via PM, I will repair it (and credit you with the +rep)

Cheers players, just read it so you DONT SPAM THE FORUM

most of you are apparently lazy enough to read the readme file
and that's why you just make a longer readme?
just kidding man, it'll be very helpfull to new people
it's just that, if they are to lazy to read the regular readme, they'll certainly be too lazy to read this one!!
i just hope they really look at it, cause like what happened with the FAQ and the bug report

i'll add this in the "usefull links" as well
