While I do agree this was nowhere near the norm, though with the severe amount of engagements and shells fired throughout the war, Im not too suprised about some of the things from the very reputable Achtung Panzer website

    http://www.achtungpanzer.com/panzerj...sd-kfz-164.htm

"It is reported that in early March of 1945, Lieutenant Beckmann from sPzJagAbt 88 destroyed Soviet IS-2 at the range of 4600 meters near Marzdorf."

"Some Nashorn crews reported that they were able to knock out Soviet T-34 tanks at distance as great as 4000 meters. Nashorn crews also reported numerous kills of KV and IS-2 tanks as well as SU-152, ISU-122 and ISU-152 assault guns."

I highly recomend the Achtung Panzer website for its critically researched website, and their forum if you wish to discuss anything about ww2 tanks.
I've been there and many other sites and forums and have read very much over many years. 2kms is very feasible, 4.6km is stretching it a bit and a shot from that range would have to hit above the road wheels of a JSII or on its top such as on top of the engine compartment at a decent angle allowing penetration. Seems a hit at 4.6km against the narrow upper side of the hull or the turret would not be a penetration.

Even MkIV's knocked out the Su's and ISU's at close range, so the fact that Nashorns did is nothing new.

Maybe you might want to take a reality check.

    Cheers ya welcome
IM planning to one day visit all these museums to photograph the tanks.

But about the penetration from 4,6km, Nashorn had a powerful cannon, and yeah, not really new thing, Germans tried to use their superior range all the time.

Actually, from late mid war on German panthers, MkIV's, and Stug's and others besides the Tigers were ordered to hold ther fire on the Eastern Front until the enemy was less than about 700 or 800 meters away, in order to save ammo and be more accurate in fire and have better penetration.

Interestingly enough, Guderian advocated just outfitting Panzer divisions with captured T-34/76s early in the war. Guderian's opinions never were very popular with the general staff though...
The Jagdpanzer IV was a tank destroyer developed against the wishes of Heinz Guderian. Its large gun and heavy frontal armor led to poor mobility and made them difficult to operate in rough terrain, leading their crews to nickname them Guderian Ente; Guderian's Duck.

The Germans used hundreds of captured Soviet tanks and AFV's. Even the Waffen SS were issued refurbished T-34/76's.

Old, old and well documented news.

Most powerful tank (not SPG or TD) of WWII was the King Tiger, next would be the JSIII, the JSII then Pershing probably.
