Thread: fighting formation!!

    Default fighting formation!!

this probably won't be used but, might as well make a suggestion. For the roman units, such as the early legionarie cohort from rtw, could you make a battle formation that is like a testudo, but has no roof and let's the legionarie stick together and fight in a tighter formation?

Ur thinking more of a shield wall formation (not phalanx) of the later empire. What made Roman soldiers so elite was that they didn't fight in closed packs, they needed space to fight. The tight packed formation was only useful for Testudo, or maybe for Triarii.

Ummm...I think what made Romans so elite was not that they needed space, it was that they could do EITHER. Like how they used a flexible manipular formation to infiltrate the Macedonian phalanxes, versus the compactness used when under missile fire.

The reason that the Romans beated the Macedonian Phalanx was terrain and flank attacks. It was just impossible to crush it from the front.

the combat with the phalanx could still be lethal
if guided by a good general!

There was a pic of an excellent unit of Roman legionaries in tight formation with shields locked, newly
made for METW 2 ...But I cannot now find the bugger.

Then you may be curious to read the description I have been working on for the Magnesia Historical Battle. All I need is someone to make a formation for the battle AI and it can be released.

If the battle at Magnesia was led by Pyrrus there would be 28 000 romans dead and maybe 7 or 8 on other side. Antiochus had the best of the best hellenic army could use.
    Waiting for Europa Barbarorum II...

Eh, Pyrrhos would probably get distracted by something shiny half way through the battle and wander off.

Yeah, Romans fight loosely in pitched battales, but when they meet the normads or in the siege, testudo will be used.

Aren't you slightly worried about M2TW unit cohesion problem?I mean units like to stay hooked one to another, as much as this is realistic(or not, cause of this is a hollywood-like animations the developers used, so not intentional), it is amazingly annoying, and those Impossible-To-Do cavalry charges.......

    There's ways to fix cohesion.

    Fighting with Guard Mode enabled.
Modding units to have shorter charge distances.
    Adding the 'can_formed_charge' attribute.
Adding a number to the end of the solder line to redefine each soldiers radius.
