    Default Native Faction/Ruler Names (Work in Progress, Need Help)

    This is a concept that's been used by a number of mod, but I want to especially thank Echad's version as a reference guide (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=141154).

    The idea is to use the specific language the court of the faction would have used around the time. This is compounded by problems of regional dialects, non-ansi scripts, different transliterations, etc.

    Here's the planed names
    Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Khwārezmšhāhīān Khwārezmšhāhīān Khwarezmian Persian

    Altan Ordyn Uls Khaan Mongol Mongolian

    In parentethis are languages I want to use, but there wasn't able to find (mostly because there's no Old Norse wikipedia).

    Need help on
    • I would also to like to know if medieval Spanish/Aragonese/Catalan were very different from modern ones.
    • I settled for modern German instead of trying to figure out which form of German the HRE court used. Any alternative with good reasoning would be appreciated.
    • Looking for someone that knows Old Norse (or maybe just Dansk/Norse and can find an Old Norse dictinoary) Thanks hekk
    • Cumans--Confederacy or Khanate? Anyone knows Kipchak turkish? It seems like they didn't have a solid political structure, making this bit hard.
    • Balkan linquistic buff

    Notes:
    • Latin for Jerusalem to emphasize it being a "Latin Kingdom," though French was probably predominant
    • French for Templars because their full Latin name is too long.
    • Adjectives are in English, for consistency (the words "fortress" "spy" etc following these are in English)

    Need inputs/opinions! I'm not expert on medieval linguistics, and a lot of the choices might be questionable.

    Nice, i've been working on something similar for DLV.

    Btw

    Kingdom of Norway = Ríki Norvegh
    King of Norway = Norvegh konungr
    Norwegian = Norrœnn

    Kingdom of Denmark = Ríki Danmaurk
    King of Denmark = Danmaurk konungr
    Danish = Danskr

    Just as a note, the Byzantine name (Basileia Rhōmaiōn and Basileus tōn Rhōmaiōn Byzantine) you refer to are in classical Greek. It's definitely not Latin. While I know they used Greek as their main/common language, I don't know enough about medieval Byzantine history (I'm only a classics major) to comment about whether they officially styled the emperor in Latin or Greek.

    Thanks, it was a weird mistake on my part. I knew it wasn't Latin since latin doesn't require transliteration, but still wrote it down T_T.

    Do the actual latin check out, though?

    I'm still working (very slowly) on my version of that =P I'm very, very picky about which language I choose for Eastern regions.

    Do you happen to know what the Duke of Genoa is called in Ligurian? I doubt I can find a English-Ligurian dictionary, but an Italian-Ligurian shouldn't be too far fetched.

    Are you also going to be changing the ethnonyms (ie "Byzantine City, Hungarian Navy" in vanilla) to "Rhōmaiōn City, Magyar Navy, etc?

    After re-reading my own sentence, I realize how incoherent it sounds.

    My current intention is no. The literary reason is, while "Rhōmaiōn" is in Greek, "City" is in English.
    The gameplay reason is, when the faction name stands alone, it is accompanied by the coat of the arms, from which a player can recognize without speaking, say, Old Church Slavic. However, it would be fairly difficult to tell which faction an agent comes from without already being familiar with these words.

    The basic part of the mod is done. Right now there's few ui aesthetic problems still bugging me.

    King of ... = Re di ... (Venice and Genoa had a "Doge di Venezia / Doge di Genoa")

    - Lower titles :
    Duke, Baron, ... = Duca di ... Arciduca di ... Barone di ... Conte di ...
