Default Windows Vista sucks donkey balls.

I've been getting random freezes while doing simple tasks for no reason. The little blue circle thing starts showing on the cursor and when I click something else it just stops. I can still move my mouse around but everything else is frozen. Not even crtl-alt-delete works, either I get zero response or the screen becomes black.

    Is this common for Vista?

Not for me, is there anything in the System error log?

Right click My Computer, select Manage.

Expand Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs. Click on System and look for red flags. Also look in Application.

Miraj/n00bl3t, have you updated through windows update? I remember reading a recent patch was/has addressed a similar problem. I also heard that overheating can cause such problems (perhaps test using a temperature monitoring program).

Your problem (this one i mean, not the other one) is quite common. Does it happen a while after switching it on?(might be a temperature problem as the pc heats up). Have you also tried msconfig to shut down some startup backgroud programs you dont need?

    LOL

I tried to do what GED said, but it just froze midway. Actually all the problems started after I installed Age of Conan. The freezing pretty much started after that, not to mention the game didn't even work properly. I had to reformat my laptop and now its fine.

Luckily this thing is new so I didn't collect too much stuff on it.

    Thanks for the help anyways.

Probably something to do with a DirectX9 vs DirectX10 issue then. Something in that game wasnt right.

Hey you guys who have freezes, do you have 32 or 64-bit Vista?
I have been thinking of buying a new computer, and I'm wondering should I take Vista or stick with Xp? My friend just bought a new computer with 64-bit vista and it freezed too and it is in maintenance for 2nd time now.

I have 32-bit. Not had a problem. Drivers are maturing however, updates ongoing. XP had problems when it came out. I still prefer XP though.

64 bit XP Pro. Don't go to Vista, even for 32 bit...

No it's not. I've never got a crash in Vista. You might have hardware problems instead.

I got vista home premium 32bit and never had a vista related crash.
    Overall I'm pleased with vista.
Everyone is cursing it's name in every corner and yet I haven't had a problem with it.
UAC was a bother but as soon as you turn that off everything is smooth sailing.

    "Windows Vista sucks donkey balls."

I thought that would be more the role of a USB device. An OS has no physical presence, surely?

Besides, DX10 needs time to mature, and XP/XP64 is more than capable of holding it's own until Vista2 (whatever it is going to be called) is released with a more widespread dx10.

there are only two things that has annoyed me from Vista.
one is the UAC; i find it pretty ridiculous and yet humorous to ask yourself for permission to do something on your own computer (even though you selected yourself as admin). like TB says, glad you can turn that off. it did not seem to help with security (atleast on a single un-networked personal home computer), as once i ran AVG after a few months of Vista it still found malicious .dll's and other things.

the other is backwards compatibility. there are some games that are very erroneous in Vista, such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, because Vista does not use some things from XP such as a Directsound layer.

My Vista was working fine for a few days ago until I installed Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.something. Then I started getting freezes and slow downs and good stuff like that. I ended up just disabling the software and my Vista is back to fine, working order as it's been for about a year now.

The first action I take on my new Vista will be to download Linux.

The mission statement of Microsoft ought to be: "No matter what innovations in hardware come about, there will always be a new version of Windows that uses so many more hardware resources, your personal computer will be as slow and clunky as ever!"
