53 BC: Following his defeat at Carrhae at the hands of the Parthians under Spahbod Surena, Marcus Licinius Crassus was executed by having molten gold poured down his throat. Some accounts claim that his head was then cut off and used as a stage prop in a play performed for the Parthian king Orodes II.

I would desire similar ends for all such men who claim supremacy through wealth.

I'd say the Russian tsars have to be close to the top, as they in effect owned all of Russia (including every person there, legally) and were one of the few absolute monarchs who exercised their right to property.

I always tought Alexander the Great and the Roman Emperors were very rich too. And to be honest, I can't imagine Crassus being richer then one of the emperors who ruled the whole Roman Empire.
